About Melsinder
Melsinder's mother had a difficult childbirth. Even with the aid of a priest/ midwife of Pharasma, she did not survive the birthing, though the child did. Growing up in the resource-poor magocracy of Nex, Melsinder and his father barely got by and had little status in most others' eyes. Melsinder's father, a simple porter, began drinking heavily soon after his wife's death and wasn't much of a parent.
Haunted by the knowledge that he had caused his mother's death, Melsinder spent most of his youth angry, defensive, and prone to getting into fights. Seeking an outlet for his rage, Melsinder joined the Nexxian military and quickly showed himself to be a strong, though unstable, leader to many of the other rookie soldiers. His squad was later ambushed by mutant creatures from the Mana Wastes, and he nearly died. Melsinder was saved by a battlefield healer in service to Pharasma (who reported seeing a scarab sitting idly on the young man's chest).
As he convalesced in the temple's care, Melsinder started to absorb Pharasma's teachings about the necessity and inevitability of death, finally finding some inner peace and casting off his self-guilt. Melsinder learned to harness his connection to the divine, finding his magical aptitude drawn most strongly toward Pharasma's reaper aspect. He is capable of powerful, though precise, bursts of negative energy as a conduit for his faith and residual anger.
Melsinder comes off as somewhat distant, but with gravitas. He sees most everyday matters and moral questions as trivial in the face of ever-looming death. He does however destroy undead on sight, consumes food and drink only in moderation, and reveres Pharasmin orthodox teachings. He even keeps a trained whipoorwill as a pet, so that those who die in his vicinity will be guided to his goddess for judgment.
When not adventuring, Melsinder serves his temple as a midwife and undertaker.
