Description,
Gerod is a giant amongst men. Standing no less than seven feet in height he easily towers over even mighty half orcen men. His features, while not overtly ugly, betray his ancestry almost as much as his height does. Strangely, though, his face is not the harsh one of rage and barbarism, but instead reveals a softness, with deep blue eyes that betray the gentle soul beyond.
His garb would seem to give the lie to his expression, however. He is clad in plain but well made garments of earthen tones. Over these he wears a thick hauberk of shinning scales that goes from his powerful neck nearly to his knees, split at the waist to allow ease of movement. At his waist is a thick brown leather belt held in place by a sturdy steel buckle. From that belt hangs the sheath of a truly massive sword. To most normal men such a weapon would be impossible to wield, but to Gerod it serves as a Hand and a Half sword quite well. Its plane brass hilt with a red leather grip stands out a a bright bit of color against the backdrop of browns that is his normal attire.
Upon his shoulders is draped a thick woolen cloak that is forest green in color and fastened by a brooch fashioned in the shape of a silver cross. The cloaks hood is drawn up over his head in an effort to hide his face from the sun, and the curious gazes of others. His left hand, clad in a thick leather gauntlet, rests upon the pommel of his sword while his right hand, likewise clad, touches its fingers to his face in a thoughtful expression.
Background
According to his adopted father, an armorsmith from Magnimar, Gerod was found as an infant, and the only survivor of a battle of some kind. Unable to locate the child's parents, and fearing the worst, the childless smith took the babe home. It wasn't until several years later that the true nature of Gerod's birth became known to the smith and his barren wife. Still, they did their best to shield their 'child' from the cruelties of those who would persecute him.
As Gerod slowly grew to manhood his father began to teach him his trade. The boy took to the craft with dillagence, but his skill was marred because, no matter how hard he tried, he was a slow learner. The one thing that he could understand, to his parent's grudging approval, was weapons. It wasn't long before Gerod spent nearly all of his free time watching the city guard practicing with their weapons. Seeking to avoid a problem, and trying to give his 'son' the best he could, James Smith bargained with one of the nobles he was making armor for and gained the man's services as a tutor for Gerod. It was this noble who taught Gerod about Honor and Chivalry, and instilled a desire within the young man to try and uphold those ideals, even though he found them difficult to always understand, and his temper sometimes got in the way.
Still, no amount of protection, even that of a lesser noble, could stop the predijueses of the small mind. When Gerod came of age he found himself attracted to the daughter of one of the other craftsmen. While his own actions were beyond reproch they still caused the girls' parents to panic. Coupling this with the girl's quiet but firm rejection of him and Gerod's heart was broken.
His parents saw this and tried to think of something that could help their son. Eventually they discovered a sign which advertised that the town of Sandpoint was looking for strong young men willing to serve as guards. James Smith and his wife managed to get the depressed Gerod to agree to go to Sandpoint. Perhaps it could be the start of a new life for him. So, one day, Gerod donned what few possesions he had, including the armor made by his father and the sword gifted to him by the noble that had taught him how to use it, and the cloak made by his mother, and set out upon the road to Sandpoint.
