First, lol

Welcome, welcome. I just want to lay out a few requests, house rules, and PbP tips before we jump in:

Requests

  • If you haven’t already, please organize your gear on your alias profile to show where it all is on your person. So armor and sheathed weapons, etc would be on your hero but your trail rations and waterskin would be in a backpack, presumably.
  • Please include at least your HP, Init, AC, TAC, FAC, Fort, Will, Ref, and Per in your posting header. The fields in Gender, Race, Classes/levels (in that order) make up your posting header.
  • You can look at anything posted behind a spoiler even if you don’t make the roll, but please don’t use that information in character unless you actually succeed with the roll or know the language. You can do this by checking your roll with the preview, writing how your character acts/reacts, and then taking a peek. Knowledge rolls might be a bit trickier, but I’m sure you guys can keep player knowledge and character knowledge separate, right? ;)

House Rules

  • Gold doesn’t weigh anything unless it’s a considerable amount
  • Encumbrance will only really be an issue if you’re at your heavy load
  • Nat 20s and nat 1s on skill checks don’t mean auto success or failure (which is actually not a house rule), but I want to make them still feel special. So after 3 “crit” successes and 1 “crit” fail, you can gain a rank in that skill for free when you level up. Yes, that was inspired by Mouse Guard. I’ll keep a tally myself and try to remind you. Your ranks in a skill still have to be less than or equal to your character level and you can’t spend that free skill rank until you’ve leveled up.
  • I’m not going to make you guys confirm crits, so don’t worry about getting feats or traits that help confirm crits.

PbP Tips:

I’ve found this guide to be very handy in understanding how PbP works, and it’s given me ideas on how to present my characters in fun and interesting ways that you can’t really do in a face to face setting. But here are also some of the basics in summary:
  • The "How to format your text: Show" button below has the tags you can use, and the preview button is always helpful. Previewing allows you to see how you rolled so you can include your character’s reaction or lack of response in the same post.
  • "Bold with quotes means you are talking," GenericGM recites enthusiastically. Italics is inner dialogue, no quotes necessary -- I should probably go to bed soon…
  • My hand is on my head. Out of Character blocks are for any out of character comments, clarification, questions, snarkiness, player to player, etc. You only need to worry about this in the Gameplay thread. The Discussion thread is assumed to be out of character because all in character discussion should happen in the Gameplay thread.
  • These tips are in a "spoiler."
  • Don’t be afraid to reveal more about your character to the players than you do to the other characters. You can do this easily through inner dialog using the italics. We’re creating a story together here, and while character developments and twists are fun, they don’t really happen without you pushing them.

This is a closed recruitment as the players will be people I know. This is also my first time GMing, so you're all probably better off. ;)

Keep in mind while making your character, PbP focuses mainly on role playing, and characters can get a lot more attention than in face to face sessions.

Character creation:

  • Start at level 1, point buy, high fantasy (20 pts)
  • Up to 2 traits or 3 if you take a drawback
  • Message me the gist of your character and we can start a back and forth over where your character grew up, etc. Depending on your backstory/class/place of origin, you'll get to pick from 3 items. Otherwise, you will get a default item. (You can choose said default item rather than the other 3 if you would rather.)

If you make a fairly detailed backstory, I will do my best to include elements in the campaign.
