Garvin is the son of famed pathfinders Canayven and Shiela Heidmarch of Magnimar. While his parents set out on their explorations, Garvin was left home in the care of family friends and watchers. He grew up hearing of his parents' numerous exploits, but was constantly sheltered from having such adventures himself.
As he grew, he learned to resent this treatment, and spent much of his free time, plotting and planning how he might do some of the wondrous things his parents did. Try as he might, he could never escape the watchful eye of his guardians long enough to have any real excitement. Even when he did, the son of such famous parents found notoriety in his name, and many doors were shut to him in fear of what troubles his fame might bring.
To change this, Garvin developed an alter ego, a young adventurous rapscallion named Garvin Berataldi. While the studious Garvin Heidmarch gave up his eager lust for adventure, turning to his studies and books, Garvin Berataldi wandered the streets at night, picking up skills his parents might have used in more dark and desolate places. Their ruined halls and sunken towers were his dark alleys and second story balconies.
Mischevious pranks on and petty thefts from snooty nobles garnered the lad a decent reputation amongst the thieves of Magnimar, not as a threat, but as someone of skill that might someday have mattered.
All of that changed when his parents retired, returning to Magnimar and opening their home to a Pathfinder Lodge. Too many eyes were present for Garvin to easily escape his dreary life for the thrill of the streets. Surrounded by tales of adventures, momentos of past glories, and people hewn and edged by adventure, Garvin has chafed at his own predicament. Gavin Heidmarch is content, but Gavin Berataldi is ready to burst free and set out on the road to something more, if only such opportunity would present itself.
