Background
Blood mixed with a clear, thick fluid splatters against the window in front of him. It feels hard to breath, as if he hadn't in a long time. Another attempt to inhale brings about another fit of coughing, the thick fluid heavy in his lungs. As he opens his eyes, a blast of light and a sudden change in pressure rock his other senses.

"Ahh, Doctor Aglernop, you look good as new!"

Blinking only serves to ease his eyes into the light, failing to remove the blur from his eyes. "Who? Who are you?"

"Khonnir Baine! You were injured while we were doing some research and I had to use this stasis pod to ensure your survival. Don't you remember?"

"I... no I don't. I remember light and pain... but almost nothing else... A lot of my memory seems to be fuzzy, actually. It's like trying to look through a dirty window."

Khonnir smiles weakly, "Hmmm, well you'll probably come around. It was quite the trauma. Let’s get you up and moving around, it'll help.

Three weeks pass.

“Good! The results are good. You’re coming along well in your research. The more we know about the substances found in the area, the closer we get to understanding what this place is.”

Over the last few weeks, Aglernop bounced back and dove into the research Khonnir offered him. It was all so interesting, and it served to distract him from the unpleasant blur of memories from his past. He recalled his youth, growing up outside of Numeria and travelling here with his parents, living on the edges the city as laborers. However, his memory regarding Khonnir and Aglernop’s training was still blurry. He did recall knowing Khonnir and it being a positive relationship, but almost nothing else about it. Khonnir had explained that he had been hit severely in the head as they were exploring the region for scrap technology, which caused the memory issues.

“Indeed. I’m hoping the results of my next test reveal enough to bring it out of the lab and into the field. It’s astonishing what effects these fluids could have on the living body, on the mind…”

“There are many stories of those like yourself who use concoctions to alter their own body in new and interesting ways. Keep studying, and I suspect you’ll be able to accomplish quite a lot.”

One year passes.

Khonnir had recently brought back the remains of a strange construct from one of his outings. He, his daughter Val, and Aglernop had been studying it non-stop for several days before Khonnir decided he needed to go back to look for more information. He didn’t offer much as to where the site was, but that wasn't unusual as they only infrequently shared more than the results of their work. The divide and conquer method of research had done them well, even more so since Val had recently joined them in the lab. It was only during their monthly synchronization meetings had they made time to catch up on the details of the other's research.

Days passed with no word from Khonnir. With prodding from Val, Aglernop left to gather help to determine what had occurred and see if Khonnir was still alive. Hopefully some of his new inventions would be ready for what he would encounter.
