Uhm... What? You're kind of skipping Gabe past something. He wasn't even talking to Krokar on Day 2 at that point. As far as the Guard, I didn't want to do anything too big. Gabe's main idea was getting the locals to train the locals (the whitecloaks) largely because two weeks (apparently how long the Aestherics are going to be there, rather then the month they originally gave the party) is no where near enough time to do that. Basically, take volunteer's, teach him how to fight, drill them on urban tactics as well as tactics for fighting in the desert. Focus some of their training on conditioning so they can handle protracted battles and basically what he got taught in the army + however the Whitecloaks train theirs, minus anything evil or the like.

Feels like it at the moment. Looking forward to whatever Omen has planned though. Considering Gabe missed the last down time due to my absence this is a good chance for him to do a lot of things honestly. Edit: Also, I wouldn't know about getting drunk actually. At least not that kind. I do get sugar drunk though. (And I've had myself tested for diabetes, don't have it.)

Omen, edited my last post in game. Gabe did actually say it was Acera who would probably be the cause of the plague.

I think that's a possibility, but it's also possible that he is simply that direct, and that good at his job. Perhaps his cunning and devious nature isn't with people but with military tactics? Perhaps he's simply that strong? Or perhaps he's got a little of everything but feels the need to -be- more direct because of all the games the other council members play. I don't think he's a co-founder is he? Maybe he was chosen to represent the every man? Gabe wasn't there for it but the council did say they would have preferred democracy. It's possible they raised him because of his different views. I personally don't know. I also don't know about Heff either. If he's as good as he seems to be, the whole 'fricking bastard' thing he does could just be another mask of his. That said, the fact that a character like him raises so many questions instead of simply being a relief of fresh fricking air from all of the politics is both hilarious and a testament to how deep Omen's NPC's can get.

Omen ~Day 2~: "Don't hate them but... yeah. Didn't help that I warned them about the disease that turned the whitecloaks and they were against preventative measures. It was too late by then too do anything, most likely but something like that still clashed with their oaths..."
"Though I actually think I might have to re-evaluate what I think of them. I suppose I was comparing them a little unfavorably to a friend of mine. She's a lot like them, but she never let fear keep her from healing others. Or what I thought was fear at least. She'd probably understand them better ironically." Gabriel shrugs just a little, "Might be that someone as young as I am is 'holding people to my own rather limited experiences'. Kind of funny, they told me I'd have to work past that if... uh... Well they told me I'd have to work past that at least and it's hard to argue with that." Gabriel winces when he feels the bruising force of the blow, but remembering something earlier, a part of him suddenly wanted to see what it was like to spar with such a strong person. Hell, maybe he could offer a few pointers as far as sword work went. Scratch that, definitely could. But he focuses on the mans words and definitely tries for the peaceful approach each time. Sometimes he took advantage of his relative strength compared to the slavers to give them multiple chances to surrender. Once before the fighting started and once after a few men were on the ground, bleeding. And though it probably wasn't a typical thing to do, he did end up treating those he injured who survived, using magical healing in only the most dire cases to save a life. It had been the one thing the Masked Healers had requested of him when they taught him how to better heal others and it was honestly something that seemed right, when much of what was going on seemed so grey. It probably helped his image a little that during all of these fights there was a white, winged horse beside him. A mythical creature, even in these lands, that lent some credibility to the honor of his words. He would do this for a good chunk of the day but either those ready to start trouble were drying up or they were simply readying themselves for the next day. When the last of them seemed to crop up, Gabriel would thank those he fought alongside, then move through the city to try and find another friend of his. Edward. He had mentioned the knight before to Krokar but with his mistake yesterday and the work he had to do today, Gabriel really hadn't the time to speak to the human knight.

Omen ~Day 2~: Gabriel nods as he understands. He'd have to earn their trust through hard work if he wanted a chance to help in larger things. At the same time, there were all of those small things he could help with too. "I think I'd be most useful helping with skirmishes. I can probably defuse some of them if it hasn't broken into all out fighting yet, my fighting skills are decent enough that I could be a boon if it does break out, and I can tend to the wound after on both sides and maybe lower animosity for the hold outs. Training I have... Less experience with. Aside from being trained that is. But the Knight who fought alongside us, Edward, might be a better hand at it. He's probably eager to get home to his family though. Perhaps you could arrange transportation for him in return for his aid?"
Gabriel paused, but not to completely deny the idea. "A question if I may? It may go into a more delicate area, so I understand if it's not my place to do so. I guessed when leaving the underground complex where we slayed Targ that the Masked Healers didn't participate in healing the combatants during the fight. Did that continue after the fact?"

Omen ~Day 2~: The tiefling didn't comment on Raul any further yet, uncertain if his opinion would be welcome or not. Gabriel was admittedly starting to feel a little useless now. He had thought with the way Heff had taken to his ideas in the past there might be some room for him outside of a purely combat role but it was hard to tell. Or maybe that was just how Krokar dealt with things.
"Not to mention I'm not an Aestheric yet so you might be limiting how much I'm brought into things." Gabriel murmured, partially to himself but also partially to Krokar. Thinking aloud. He didn't sound bitter. If that's how things were that's how they were and if he was wrong same deal. This organization seemed to know what they were doing. But Gabriel wasn't one to sit on the side lines when he could help, so he had to at least try. Gabriel thought about it for a moment. Krokar had said there was nothing else to do but all the same, ”Would it be rude to ask what I can assist in, given my current position?”

Omen ~Day 2~:
”That sounds like the best way to handle things, but I imagine you're already strapped for time. And if they all passed inspection they lost too many to be able to guard Akropash.” Gabriel wasn't speaking against what Krokar said so much as taking it into account and trying to puzzle it out. His idea hadn't been a perfect one, but until the Whitecloaks were vetted... ”I spoke to a few of them. I've also been beaten by a few of them. I'm probably not the only one with that perspective either. Some of them are simply bullies in suits, but some of them are honorable men and very loyal to each other. I'd honestly have trouble telling how much of what they did was because of Acera and Targ and how much of it was because Raul lead them to it, considering how loyal they seemed of that man. And he earned it, I'd say. Definitely made poor choices but when that's all there is... When we came into that base of theirs, we found him standing against a tide of undead alone to protect wounded and exhausted soldiers. At the same time, he himself acknowledges that Command didn't suit him, though he seemed to give you guys a run for your money with his tactics.”
Gabriel sighed a little. That was a rather bleak situation all told and there didn't seem to be an obvious right answer. But with a flick of his tail he was thinking and speaking again. ”All the same, Akropash will need a well trained guard, not just brawlers, to protect them once the Aestheric leaves. Have you any plans to put something like that forth? And have you considered a similar program for the citizens as a whole? I'd imagine many of them would appreciate being able to learn self defense, and the ability to form a militia would not only go toward preventing future tyrants, but also be a boon to whatever Guard is formed in the case of large emergencies.” Omen ~Day 15~: Gabriel laughed, taking the Pegasus' actions as an obvious 'of course, now hurry up and get on'. He hadn't gotten that much better at reading her over the last two weeks but his time training her had been helpful to him as well. Gabriel climbed into the saddle that had been prepared specifically for her, an exotic one that fit around her wings perfectly while also being reminiscent of the military saddles he had once used in Andril's army.
”Alright.” Gabriel said, taking the reigns gently. He preferred to guide rather then lead for the most part. For instance, she definitely knew more about flying then him. ”Our first stop is Andril's capitol. Lets go!” The tiefling leaned forward and didn't bother hiding the excitement in his voice. He had learned that this pegasus was much better at reading people then he was and often saw through him quite easily. Not to mention, he thought she might appreciate it, being able to make him this excited to fly.

Omen ~Day 2~:
Gabriel accepts the drink and hopes it was water as he sips at it. ”There are some things I think my group has ideas on, but a few that I know need to have priority if Akropash is going to last long enough for something more long term. The first was the Whitecloaks. They need to be replaced. I'm not sure if using their order again will work out, all things considering. The people might know how they helped in the end but it's hard to forget the many times before where they were helping Targ. That said, ignoring them completely wouldn't work either. The Whitecloaks I fought beside were each and everyone competent veterans used to tactics and fighting. I supposed they'd have to be considering how harsh this land could be.”
Gabriel pauses for a moment to collect his thoughts. He wasn't worried so much about speaking of turn, Krokar seemed to appreciate being direct, but having his idea confused because of how he said it. ”I think we can kill two birds with one stone if we put them in a teaching capacity. We give them a chance to dig themselves out of the hole their cloaks put them in and work off the debt they owe the people, give the people a chance to see them as more then oppressors, and get well trained troops out of the mix." Gabriel grinned as a thought occurred to him. "This would also be a good way to weed out trouble white cloaks who don't have any obvious crimes but still proffered life under Targ and might want to bring it back or simply abuse their power. Have someone skilled watching the classes closely but discreetly. If we give them the chance, someone who wants to seize power might try and turn whatever group they're given into a force loyal to them then Akropash. You'd have to watch them anyway, but it'll cost you less resources to do that then train Akropash's Guard yourself.” Gabriel paused again, but this time he was a little hesitant. Now way of knowing if it was a secret club secret unless he asked. ”I was also hoping to learn whats going to be done about Raul.” Omen ~Day 15~: She already knows attack, defend and guard. If he successfully teachers her these three tricks she'll be combat trained!

It probably wasn't the first time Krokar had said it but Gabriel's later teen years had been spent happily serving in an army alongside a paladin. ”Respect for authority comes with being a paladin.” The tiefling joked, though the joke faded when the man stepped forward and spoke more seriously for a moment. Gabriel resisted the urge to react like a child, though it was tempting to gulp just a little at the dark expression, and instead nodded. ”You're trusting me to leave your control for a while, knowing what I do. I'll not betray that trust. As far as contacting me... I... Uh... I have no idea how easy that will be but I'll be ready for it when the time comes. It was a pleasure to meet you.” Gabriel extends a hand for a hearty handshake, his own not trying to 'crush' the mans as some might, but still being firm in strong in grip nonetheless. After which Gabe will give a short bow to the man, out of respect for the man himself more then his authority, and then would go to rejoin the Pegasus outside. She was waiting and likely quite antsy, since he had told her they would already be in the air by now, so he jogged back to her side. Still, he didn't miss the chance to tease her a little about that when he got there. In a rather calm voice, as if he hadn't hurried to her side, he asked almost offhandedly, ”Alright, you ready to go?”

Omen ~Day 2~:
"Well, whichever it is..." Gabe said, several minutes after relaxing beside his friend in the shade, "Might be that I need to learn a few lessons from you too. Course, you probably already knew that. Come on, lets go check in with my new boss again. With you joining me, we're going to need some things. Not to mention I've got some ideas to run by him and... well..."
The young man shrugged. It had been a while since he had to answer to another. Well, not exactly. He had to answer to the slavers with whips certainly but it wasn't really the same either. The tiefling stood up and looked to his new friend to see if she was following, then headed off to Krokar's 'office'. It didn't take too long and once there he politely knocked from outside rather then enter. Gabriel actually had to remind himself that the man was one of the leaders of the Aestherics and potentially Gabe's future boss. It was a little too easy to just talk straight with the man, and though Geoffrey had been like that to some degree the paladin always had small reminders of his authority, however unintentional, because Gabriel was in charge of a lot of small things like taking care of their horses, armor and weapons. Once admitted, Gabriel would pause for a moment as he realized he didn't know what the proper way to start addressing the man was. So sans salute, Gabriel said, "The undead have been laid to rest." He thought briefly about saying more, such as how impressed he was by the priest, but that seemed rather pointless. Krokar likely knew just how skilled that hollow looking man was. "Is there anything you need of me? If not, I was hoping we could talk about Akropash for the moment, and what the Aestherics plans are for it. I had some ideas and if I'm too be, uh, trying out for your organization it seems I should be running things by you guys, getting your permission, and so on before acting." Omen ~Day 15~ Doing His Own Thing: More important hadn't been his exact words. He had wanted to go with his friends, especially after the couple weeks of getting the chance to reconnect with them, but he had more pressing matters that concerned him. He only hoped he was not leaving them at a time of need. It was a hard choice, but in the end Gabriel had decided. He needed to get stronger.
With his new friend by his side, with his armor packed and stowed, and with the several supplies he had requested, Gabriel was ready. Rather then accepting a teleport and costing his new superiors extra coin, the tiefling had decided on a simpler route. One that his friend was quite excited about. She was more then strong enough to carry him, and was very much looking forward to the days of flying before them. Gabriel wondered if she understood just how much travel they'd be doing but in truth he didn't think it would matter. She seemed all to eager to take to the skies. The fact that she'd be getting the chance to meet some important people in Gabriels life only served to excited her more. Gabriel waited until his friends were gone, then stepped into Krokar's 'office' one last time. The Aestherics would be here for another two weeks, they had said, but now they seemed to have things well under way now. Still, Gabriel was interested in joining them, and that meant keeping them abreast of his actions to a certain extent as well as making sure they had no need of him. Thus, here he was, dressed in plain clothes that were perhaps a bit too fine for his comfort and looking at someone he had grown to respect since meeting him. "She's all ready and raring too go. Thank you again for acquiring the equipment for her by the way. It'd seem somehow wrong if I wasn't taking as good a care of her as I possibly could." He pauses a moment, then continued, his voice a little lower. "Is there anything else you need of me, sir?"

Pretty sure we can make it look like something more discreet. And it's more about her comfort then Gabe's concern. Also, Gabe doesn't have the experience to get that this might be a problem, so he'll have to deal with it first.

Oh man, I'm so excited. I applied to an Urban Fantasy campaign with this Alchemist character I've had on the back burner for so long. He fits perfectly too! All I play is frontliners. I agree that your interpretation could be correct too. Gabriel was privy to that conversation I think, but it went over his head. Found it! Knew there was more definitive stuff that lead me to that conclusion. Link. That page has our interactions with the healers in the Colosseum. They wore ordinary surgeon/doctor masks, not the Masked Healer masks. Omen actually went out of his way to clarify that because a couple of you guys assumed they were masked healers because, well, 'mask'.

Heff- Heff looks at the rescued prisoners. "Of course, we're currently protecting and escorting non-combatants out of the city, we can easily add them into the mix." Bjorkus- ”If these healers really do wanna to mend Akropash’s wounds, they’ll help in whatever way they can. There’s plenty of aid they can give that doesn’t get ‘em directly involved in the fighting.” Jamie- Heff taps his leg and nods, nodding in agreement with Bjorkus's words. However Jaime shakes his head. "I am sorry, but our organization is a pacifist one. We cannot and will not get involved." And the quotes above this post. The implications are least very heavily leaning toward 'The Masked Healers did take in non-combatants, but then sealed up their doors and waited until the fighting was over. The Aestherics were protecting the people in the Colosseum.' I'll give you that maybe one or two Masked Healers were there, but they were probably stranded by the fighting in the streets, and I'd give it a coin flip if they chose to help anyone who was wounded in case they turned out to be combatants.

They aren't favoring a side with an uplift project. They're spreading knowledge, nature and healing. The focus of the organization. The fact is that they'd offer that to anyone who asked. You just happened to ask. They'd probably have offered it to Targ and Acera if they had asked. So Toramin's view point is they're a secretive organization whose also actually secretly good, if pacifistic? Alright, I'm good then.

How is Toramin interpreting these events so differently then? They couldn't have been blunter. I'm not even re-interpreting them, I'm re-writing what they said in an OOC format. And it's not an attack, but it is a little annoying to have conflict with another PC member, and yes, there will be conflict when Gabe finds out what Toramin is trying to push him out of things, because of interpretations that are pretty hard to mistake and twisting words around. Heck, you are literally -wrong- about them being in the Colosseum healing during the fighting. They weren't. That's not a misinterpretation.

"We avoid fighting, and that includes protection. If we were to protect one group from another that would be getting involved and could make us a target. We are more than willing to heal any ailments, but being proactive would show that we favor one side over the other. I am sorry, but we cannot get involved that way." Gabe was actually talking about a magical disease that could, would and in the end did inflict itself upon innocent people in a total of two countries. Healing is partially 'preventative measures' such as cleaning water, hands, sanitizing, using protection, etc. They are focused solely on repairing damage after it is done, even after being told that innocents could be turned into horrific undead. All because it was inflicted on them by an evil source. "We are healers and spreaders of knowledge and nature. We are a pacifist organization that does not get involved in any sort of conflict, no matter how evil or destructive it is." They don't fight evil. They might be willing to change it passively, but they are healers, people of knowledge, and nature. They sound more like what Druids from other sources. And in the end, they won't protect either. Jaime frowns. "Do not try to twist words on me." He shakes his head. "Of course we're sheltering and helping people, just not anybody that's involved in the fighting. Didn't you hear what that man said?" He says, pointing to Heff. They will not get involved in conflict. They were not healing in the Colosseum until after the fighting is over. The fact that they are healing now means they are kind people and they are very responsible healers. Not good, just healers. "More likely they will wait for the fighting to end, then offer their services to whoever remains on either side. Quite possibly they will offer it to no one too. Though they could be friends, unless Heff has some more tricks we don't know about yet, I doubt they will ever be allies in a conflict." The quote you quoted earlier. Gabe is not insulting them. He says they could definitely be friends, but they will never ally with someone in conflict. In fact, this is exactly what they did. They waited until the conflict was over before helping anyone they hadn't locked away in their temple. The Aestherics had to do the bulk of the healing. This is all stuff Toramin was present for. For the Dwarf to have his opinion, he would have to ignore each of these circumstances, or be in serious denial about them. They were open about their intent and Gabe has accepted it. Has Toramin?

The problem I'm having is that you are ignoring things that Toramin has heard IC to make these assumptions about Gabe's character, not that Toramin has those opinions.

Toramin has been with Gabe all of two days since reuniting. If he keeps acting like that there are going to be problems between the two problems and not the 'fun character development kind'. And you're still wrong. Willing to help an economy grow is not resisting evil. Their interest was a more stable place where knowledge could be nurtured and grown. They weren't opposed to Targ and Acera because they were cruel dictators, it's because they were ineffective, cruel dictators. They didn't even make a secret of it. They literally said 'we would not fight evil' to both Toramin and Gabe, to their faces. Those were the Aestheric healers Toramin. And they sheltered some civilians. They still closed their doors to the rest.

Toramin, they don't passively resist evil, so you're at least as mistaken about their goals. They straight up said they don't care for fighting evil or for fighting alongside good. More over, Gabe isn't saying do or don't do anything to them. The key words in my list of goals were him were 'negotiate'. And the truth is that no, they were not in fact allies in the CONFLICT. The keyword of Gabe's own quote in that sentence. They're a pacifist organization that closed their doors while people needed healing to avoid getting drawn into the conflict. Edit: Grey beards was an OOC slip up. Whenever I think of them I think of the Grey beards from skyrim for some reason. So far, all of Toramin's distaste for Gabe is pretty much hot air.

Gabe never yelled at Jamie? o.0 That was Bjorkus. And he didn't insult them directly so much as speak out of turn. He's also apologized for it and spent an evening learning under them. All of which Toramin saw.

What? Gabe respects their beliefs and understands the limitations it places on them. He's not asking them to give it up, but to teach others how to care for wounded for the times when their oaths would prevent them. It seemed more diplomatic then saying 'heal them or gtfo'.

That's a good joke Omen. Every know's tying people up isn't the best use of rope, especially when you're just after a few answers.

Also -Get the DM to spill the beans on the miles Gabe will be traveling, since he seems to dislike Geography so much. He keeps ducking the question so rope might be necessary.

Gabe's Goals -Gabe plans to help with the whole leader thing. I've got his idea from earlier that Gabe will be suggesting once he see's everyone else. (He'll be visiting them later on in Day 2). -Gabe plans to help set up some form of Guard for the place. His idea will be to use the Whitecloaks as trainers to help teach people tactics and combat, and he might even try and talk to the Aestherics about giving Raul a chance to work off the debt he's earned under some form of very strict conditions. (Never able to take leadership positions again, for example). Aside from the Raul thing Gabe wants Akropash to have a very competent guard ready to uphold the law and protect it's citizens. At later stages of the government development, exactly how to integrate the Guard into everything will be determined. But this needs to be done soon, because once the Aestherics leave that's a good portion of their defenses gone. -Instituting general defense courses to all inhabitants, anyone old enough. The city is part of Yenrick, and the deserts are still filled with Slavers. Not everyone can get a weapon, but there is a drow whose quite good at fighting with his fists that can teach people the basics there. -Negotiate with the Grey Beards to try and get less magical healing practices taught. Get a good core of combat medics and surgeons who don't rely on magic. The city can't rely on a group of healers that's going to shut themselves into their temple every time someone attacks the city. He doesn't begrudge them this, since they're sort of a neutral faction that seems to want to do a lot for the city anyway, but Akropash can't go without any healing in battle. -Talk to Toramin about ways the city can be made more secure ontop of inhabitable. -Have the tunnels explored more extensively, have plans set up so that if someone attacks the city, people can retreat into hidden underground area's with emergency rations. Talk to greybeards, see if they'd be willing to offer a healer or two for purely non-combatant healing in these designated civilian locations who can also supply water. The rest of the tunnels should become part of the Guard's training. The ability to use them would become invaluable in fighting off any invasion force.

Rilka, the Bracers of Armor provide an armor bonus, which doesn't stack with the Mithral Shirt you already have. If you want to increase your AC you could get the Mithral shirt enchanted for +1, at the cost of 1,000 gold. Ring of Deflection and Amulet of Natural armor both also provide +1 and both cost 2,000 gold. Could squeeze in another 1,000 gold for the same AC. Or just make your shirt a +2 I suppose, same price. XD

Omen ~Day 2~: Gabriel had no idea what that meant, or maybe that was what it meant, that she had no idea what he was talking about too. He chuckled at that thought and leaned back into the tree. "You've got nerves of steel if you aren't at all bothered about that place. Or maybe you're just better at letting things go. Really hard to tell."
Gabriel looks at the place where her injuries had been. Apparently the elder drow womans healing was even more effective then he thought. Not even a scratch. Gabriel resisted the urge to reach out again. She seemed comfortable enough with his touch but she might also prefer her space. She definitely hadn't appreciated those that had gotten close to her in the city.

It looks like Gabe's path is actually pretty straight forward. He won't be making any stops that are too far out of the way and he'd actually even be able to visit Snick's village to see how he's doing.

Omen ~Day 2~: Gabriel takes a seat beside the pegasus, the heavy armor coming to rest on his form quite comfortable, still fitted to his body eerily well. The Aestherics much have had quite the craftsmen to do such and the fact that even his helmet account for his horns, one of which faced the wrong direction, was impressive. The tiefling removed the helmet and set it down, feeling his multi-colored eyes touched by the sun a little bit more without the helms shade. It was pleasant, warm, and the day now seemed a little better with the two undead put to rest. Gabriel looks over to the Pegasus. She had been nervous around the undead and hadn't hesitated to walk toward the shade when given the option, rather then go underground. It probably didn't sit well with her, what with her being born of creatures used to plains and skies. But she had been so determined the night before. He worried. Perhaps overly so, but she was a new friend and he was not going to take her situation for granted. Or he would try not to, at least. "How do you feel?"

Omen ~Day 2~: Gabriel is surprised at how easily the man manages what he had assumed was somewhat of a complex ritual. Seeing the symbol, the tiefling raises an eyebrow as well. "Unless you think there might be more dangers that should be dealt with here that others haven't noticed, no. I offer thanks to you and the Mother of Souls."
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 Gabriel offers the man a polite bow to the priest and would head back toward the rope if there was nothing else of important. His armor made it harder to shimmy back up the rope but the tiefling took his time and accepted that he would fall every once in a while. He wasn't particularly happy being down here, but rushing would only make it harder. Once out of the pit, Gabriel would make his way to where he had seen the pegasus go to rest and relax. He wanted to talk with her a little before moving on to the rest of the tasks he had today.

Yeah. I just wish I knew how long Gabe's stuff would take. XD Oh well. Omen, how many miles is it from Akropash to Andril? Same question, from Andril to Hielra? Same question, from Hielra to the mountains?

The Penumbral Accords Map
Venture-Captain Drandle Drang looks tired as he calls an emergency meeting in the middle of night at his chambers in the Grand Lodge. “I’m sorry to call you in on such short notice and on such a dark night, but a friend of the Society needs your help immediately.” From an adjoining chamber, an elegantly dressed woman of middle age with olive skin and long, straight black hair and piercing eyes steps into the room. “Allow me to introduce to you Hamaria Blakros, of the esteemed Blakros family, whose name I’m sure you all know.” Hamaria sits at Dreng’s side, smooths her satin dress over her knees, and speaks in a clear though pained voice. “I’m afraid my forebears made a terrible mistake, and I need you to help remedy the situation. When the Blakroses were first gaining a financial and social foothold centuries ago, my ancestors made a pact called the Penumbral Accords with a strange organization on the Shadow Plane called the Onyx Alliance, which granted us trade routes through its dark realm to avoid unpleasant searches, tariffs, and questions among the many parties with whom we traded. At the time, this was an invaluable service, but as our wealth and influence grew, the benefits became less pronounced. Now, almost five centuries later, we no longer want to pay the ongoing price of this agreement. Since that time, we’ve been providing a steady stream of slaves to the Onyx Alliance... including the eldest of our daughters each generation. This year we have two eldest daughters—my twins Eleanir and Michellia—and I refuse to let them be taken! “But we can’t actively break the Penumbral Accords ourselves. We don’t know all the details other than our end of the bargain, which requires us to deliver slaves to our very own Blakros Museum on the night of each new moon—and to deliver the eldest Blackros daughter of each generation on the new moon after her 21st birthday. We are told to stay away until dawn, and have honored this command thus far. In every instance for generations, we’ve returned to find no sign of the slaves or our own heirs left in the building. They’ve got some device that lets them take our daughters to their plane, something that only functions one night a month, and only until dawn. That night is tonight, and my Eleanir and Michellia are already there! I need you to get in before the sun rises and deactivate or destroy whatever allows them to keep stealing our people. If that prevents them from ever threatening us and holding the Penumbral Accords over our heads again, even better.” Dreng leans forward. “You understand, I’m sure, how valuable our relationship with the Blakros family is to the Decemvirate. Their assets at the museum are immense, and assisting the Lady Hamaria tonight will go along way to ensuring that both her family and our organization can form a long-lasting alliance that will benefit all parties.” He glances at Hamaria, who nods once in agreement. “I regret that Miss Teladren will not be able to join you, but we were not able to locate her, and we do not have the luxury of time to continue looking. You will have to make do without her, I'm afraid. Hurry to Blakros Museum, friends. There isn’t much time!” |
