Background:
--------------------
Francrato was born the son of a Wiscrani prostitute and her patron, a member of the Nidalese Midnight Guard serving a tour of duty in Cheliax. His life as a child, was, briefly, fairly comfortable; while his father remained in the country, he kept his concubine well-off and even showed signs of affection towards his son. Young Francrato was enthralled by his father's ability with shadow magic, and begged his father to briong him back to Pangolias when his time abroad ended so that he could learn the art of shadowcasting. When his tour of duty ended, he paid off Francrato's mother well for her time and attentions, packed his things, and returned to Nidal, alone, with nothing more than a pat on the head to his son. Francrato never saw or heard from his father again.
In truth, it may have been kindness on his father's part to leave him behind, Dusk Hall being a harsh place even on those students of the art who survive their training. Francrato, all of six at the time, did not understand this and blamed his mother for 'driving father away'. The wealthy lifestyle they had enjoyed faded quickly with his father's departure as well, and they had to make do with less and less as she fell to the more common ranks of her profession. Again, the boy saw this as her fault and his resentment grew.
As he entered his teenage years, he did whatever he could to learn his father's art. He studied the few scraps of magical texts he could gets his hands upon; the words were just gibberish to him. He offered his service at a small temple dedicated to Zon-Kuthon; the priests began to initiate him into the mysteries of the Midnight Lord, but Francrato couldn't endure the pain and fled. Finally, he was reduced to hiding in an alleyway, starving and alone, and crying into the darkness that he would do anything, give anything, for a chance to be a great man like his father.
