Background:

“Bully good sir. Bully.” Fitzgerald slaps the super mutant head down on the counter. The store owner’s face wrinkles at the site of the blood now oozing onto his counter, but drops the caps into Fitzgerald’s outstretched hand all the same. The store owner has a contact where he can sell the head for twice the price he’s paying this strange man, so a little blood is no big deal. Fitzgerald slips the gold into his coat pocket, gives the man a salute, slings his laser rifle over his shoulder and stomps out the door.

A sign creaks, as it swings over the door. “Antiques and Antiquities” is emblazoned upon the splintered sign, with the words “and other things” painted on under it, obviously a later addition. As Fitzgerald exits the store, and closes the door behind him, sun, filtered through dusty air, lights upon him. From his knee high brown leather boots covering a good portion of his khaki pants, to his pith helmet, bushy brown mustache, and monocle, the man seems to come right out of the story books from old British Africa. The only thing out of character seems to be the laser rifle slung over his shoulder, a sharp contrast to the sabre hanging from his belt. Fitzgerald coughs at the dust, switches his monocle to the other eye, and sets off down the broken road.

***

“Fitzgerald Hawtry, born to Nicholas and Naomi Hawtry. Naomi was the daughter of Nigel Bunyan, Overseer of Vault 27, and a British National. Nigel was replaced as Overseer after 10 years, when he went crazy and thought the Vault was the African Safari. Naomi was a smart girl, however her father’s influence left her distant from the real world. When the vaults opened, her mother Marnie left her father in a hope to settle her down to reality. It worked, by the name of Nicholas Hawtry, who Naomi described as “Living up to his last name of ‘Hawt’ry”. Nicholas and Naomi created the community of New London, named by Naomi, and it became a refuge for those just leaving the vaults. It wasn’t long before a child was born, Fitzgerald. He was raised to the stories of his Grandfather, and was able to find books on the British Safari and soon became enveloped in that world. He especially loved the past president Theodore Roosevelt, and uses the word bully every chance he gets. However, his world was shattered on November the 18th, 2161 when the community was attacked by super mutants. Most the settlers were killed or captured, and his parents were slaughtered in front of him. When the Midwestern Brotherhood of Steel came by later to inspect the destruction, they found the boy using the dead super mutants as target practice for a laser rifle, and found him to be a good shot so they recruited him in to be trained.

It wasn’t long before they discovered that he had become permanently affected by his parent’s death. His ideas of the African Safari were ingrained into him, and in a lot of ways he became like his grandfather. The difference was that instead of shooting invisible lions, Fitzgerald actually went out and hunted Super Mutants, pretending the wasteland to be the African plains. He was no good to them, so they sent him away.

Having lost his purpose, he took up drug use and drinking heavily. When he nearly lost his favored Laser Rifle from it, he knew he had gone to pot. He visited his old home. Everyone had moved on, even the carrion. No one had buried the bodies, and he found his parents skeletons right where he had left them. Memories flooded back of that horrific day, and he made a vow to clean himself up and avenge his parents. Since that day, he has stalked those “plains”, turning in more super mutant heads than anyone we have on record.”

The man finishes reading the papers out loud, and looks up at his commander. The commander’s face is shrouded in darkness, but upon his jacket a clean American Flag has been stitched on. He withdraws a thick cigar from within his jacket, rolling it between calloused fingers before slicing the end off with a folding knife. Lighting his cigar, the commander draws in a slow, purposeful breath. The head of the cigar begins to glow brightly, crackling and popping before a gout of smoke is exhaled through his nose and across the bristly whiskers of his thick mustache. He pulls the cigar from his mouth and smiles.

“Good, he is exactly what we are looking for.”
