Description:

Appearance: Filiana appears to be a beautiful young (25yrs) female halfling. She stands 2'11" tall and weighs about 30 pounds. She has shoulder length brown hair, usually pulled back into a ponytail and has blue eyes and pale skin. She is wearing a simple tunic and pants outfit such as peasants or farm workers might wear. The clothing is well cared for but somewhat worn and patched. Over this she wears a cloak that although noticeably new compared to her other attire is not of particularly great quality.

Personality: Filiana is generally quiet and self-effacing. She is used to almost always being hated and mistrusted for her powers and so is always very cautious about choosing to use them. As such she usually goes out of her way to not draw attention to herself until she feels comfortable with the people she is around. Even then she is fairly quiet-spoken. The only exception to this tends to be when she is using her bloodline powers, when she is filled with a sense of confidence.

Background:
The Longsong family is many hundreds of years old and is spread far and wide across Golarion. From Irrisen and Mendev to Osirion and beyond, the Longsongs grow and build and trade and adventure. At least that's what Filiana's father always told her at any rate. He was always ready with a tale of the travels and adventures of this or that many times removed cousin or some great great great uncle or aunt. When she was little she thought her father's stories the most fabulous things in the world and would often beg or wheedle such tales from him, delighting in the feeling of being part of such a renowned family. As she got older however, and the realities of life in Ustalav started to crowd their way in to the bubble of happiness that her parents always strove to maintain around her, she came to suspect that her father's stories were just that, stories. By the time she came of age she had largely stopped believing them altogether.

Shortly after that she stopped thinking about such minor things completely, as quite suddenly, her life changed. It started with a visit to a neighboring village. Once every couple of months, Filiana's father, Edal, would make the journey down to the township to attend the market. Sometimes he would take goods to sell, if the harvest had been good and there was spare. And sometimes it would just be to buy such supplies as they might need, medicines and such. On a couple of occasions he had taken Filiana with him. She had loved these visits. The township seemed so busy and colorful and exciting. And Edal would always find just a little money to buy her a treat. This time, however, she was making the trip on her own. Her father had come down ill and although Filiana had never made the trip before, her mother was worried enough about her husband to send Filiana to the town to buy medicines. Filiana arrived in the town in the middle of the day, purchased the needed medicines and then proceeded to get distracted by the hustle and bustle of the market. Before she knew it, it was late afternoon and she had not yet set out for home. On another day she might have simply found a cheap room at an inn and waited out the night, but as soon as she realised what the time was she became acutely aware that her father was ill and needed the medicine.

And so, she set out for home. The roads in the area were neither well maintained nor patrolled. Although the area wasn't exactly a lawless wilderness, it was generally held that travel while moderately safe during the daylight hours was at best, ill advised at night. The trees around the road were dense and close and darkness fell early and deep. To make matters worse, the night was cloudy and moonless and Filiana, not intending to travel by night, had brought no light. For several hours she stumbled along the road, becoming by degrees more and more scared as time went on. Almost completely blind in the pitch dark, Filiana found every noise, however small, suddenly magnified and full of unknowable menace. She lost the ability to keep track of time and was no longer sure how far she had come and how close she was to home. Eventually, the fear and uncertainty became too much for her and she stopped, overwhelmed and paralysed by it all. She fell to her knees and hunkered down like a small animal too scared to even move.

Filiana stayed like that for what seemed an eternity to her. And then, suddenly, light. A soft pale radiance shone through her eyelids and she opened her eyes and discovered, to her surprise that she could see, that she recognised where she was, and that she wasn't all that far from her home. She was so relieved to be able to see again, and to know that she was near her home that it took her a moment to realise that the light was actually coming from her! Lifting her hand she saw to her amazement that it was the source of the light. Her right hand was glowing with the pale light that now let her see her way. For a while she just stared at it in fascination before it suddenly occurred to her that she had no idea how this had happened or how long it would last for. Scared into sudden action by the thought of being plunged back into darkness she
jumped up and ran the rest of the way to her home, arriving flustered and breathless.

The light emanating from her hand flickered and went out as she approached her home and her mother was far too frantic with worry and relief to ever think to ask her how she had got home in the dark. And at first, Filiana was so relieved to be home that she didn't mention it. A few days later however, when her father was somewhat recovered, she told her parents the tale of her time in the dark. Her father was quick to trot out one of his tales of some many greats-grandfather who had fought alongside the Shining Crusade and had been blessed by some great celestial ally for some act of bravery. Perhaps, he concluded it had been that very doubtless magical being who had shone the light for her in memory of her great ancestor. Filiana rolled her eyes at the story, but also smiled slightly. However ridiculous, her father's tales were a comfort. Her mother however, looked worried and said nothing.

For a while after that, nothing further happened, although Filiana found that her mother's unspoken concerns were contagious and she worried almost constantly. What had happened? Was it some ancient power helping the descendant of a halfling hero of ages past? She found that prospect worrying, although she had no shortage of alarming ideas. Was it some forest sprite playing a trick, a devilish monster marking her for later misfortune? Had she somehow done this thing herself? The last thought seemed strangely the most worrying. All of the other possibilites at least were the work of some outside force, but if the source of the light were somehow Filiana herself, she would likely find herself ostracized by the superstitious folks who lived nearby. And in a world where community was crucial to survival, such would almost be a death
sentence. And not just for her. Such a thing would cast its shadow on her parents as well. So every day she prayed that it would not happen again, and every day she worried that it would.

And then, one day, several weeks later, all of Filiana's worries came true. She was at a small gathering of her contemporaries, mostly the sons and daughters of local farmers, along with a few of similar age from the nearest village. They would gather from time to time in a glade in the forest to talk amongst people their own age, usually a fairly unusual thing for most of them. With her recent worries playing on her mind, Filiana would have preferred not to have gone this time, but her friend Avalia had convinced her to come along. So reluctantly, she was there, standing quietly by herself while Avalia drank Addic Cruelbone's cider. Filiana already knew that she liked the cider no more than she liked the halfling that had brought it, the Longsongs and the Cruelbones having a long history of not getting on, so she wasn't even tempted to try it this time.

Suddenly, the quiet murmurings of the young people in the glade were cut off as a scream rang out from close to Filiana. Whirling around she saw two humans, members of the group that she hardly knew really. They had split off from the rest of the group to flirt and talk privately, but now, the man was backpedalling into the middle of the glade and the young woman was lying on the ground bleeding from a large bite on her side. Standing over her and snarling ferociously was a large black wolf. Wolves were a common enough threat in the area that Filiana knew it was unusual for one to attack a group like this, and to notice that the wolf looked peculiar. It had a strange hump growing up from it's back that was covered in sores that were weeping some kind of black ichor.

The wolf shifted closer to the fallen woman, who was already unconscious from her wound, preparing to grab her by the throat and all of a sudden Filiana felt a force welling up inside her. Not knowing why she did it, she raise her hand and pointed at the wolf and a jet of white flame shot out and struck the wolf in the chest. The wolf turned it's gaze on her and prepared to charge at her and she pointed again and the flame lanced out and struck the wolf full in the face and it fell to the ground, dead. Everyone else in the glade stood in stunned silence at what they had just seen, but Filiana rushed up to the fallen woman. When she saw how bad the wound was she despaired for a moment, before that strange instinct took over again and she stretched out her hand and released the white flame again, this time aimed at the woman at her feet. But this time the flame did not harm, but healed. Before her astonished eyes, the wound healed up.

"Demon!" The sudden shout snatched her attention away from the healing woman. Whirling around she saw Addic Cruelbone, pointing at her, with an expression of loathing on his face. "Monster!", he shouted. "I saw her! She set that wolf on the human and then attacked her with some evil magic!"

"No!" Filiana cried "I didn't! I wouldn't ... I, I would never ..." Her protestations of innocence trailed off as she saw to her horror that everyone was backing away from her. Her peers, some even her friends, staring at her in fear as they backed away. Then some broke and, turning suddenly, ran off. Moments later, the rest followed. Addic leered his loathing at her one last time before shouting "Monster!" at her one more time and turning to flee with the rest.

10 Minute:

Five Things
1. Filiana is scared of the dark. Light is always one of her cantrips because of this.
2. While she longs to be brave and adventurous like all those storied members of her family, she doubts herself and worries that she will not be good enough.
3. Although she has not traveled out of Ustalav, she has been to the Palatinates and seen how they are ruled. As such she is beginning to develop a disapproval of the Counts of Ustalav, seeing them as failing to care for their people.
4. At least one of her father's tales is true. An ancestor did fight with the Shining Crusade and was blessed by an Archon of the Crusade. This is the source of her power.
5. She has never met, or even seen a dwarf.

Two Goals
1. She wishes to discover the truth of her bloodline.
2. She wants to travel and see the world.

Two Secrets
1. None of her father's tales of the family ever mentioned anyone who could cast spells. Filiana secretly worries that this might mean that she is adopted. (she is wrong about this but she does worry about it)
2. The Cruelbone family is a branch of the Longsong family. They sided with the Whispering Tyrant during the Shining Crusade. As such the touch of the Celestial is not in their bloodline.

Three People
1. Avalia Millreed - a human woman of a local family. She is roughly of an age with Filiana and they were close friends when they were younger. Although they are still friends, Filiana's magic has come between them and they are not as close as once they were.
2. Cobble Longsong - a very distant relative, Cobble visited Filiana's family for a while and it was he that fanned the embers of her desire to travel to flame.
3. Addic Cruelbone - member of a family of halflings living in the same area as Filiana and her family. He dislikes her as most Cruelbones dislike the Longsongs.

Three Memories
1. Her fondest memory is a childhood one. Sitting on her father's lap as he told one of his stories while her mother sits nearby sewing. It is a strong memory of warmth and safety.
2. Her darkest memory is that of the night she was alone on the road, before the light came to guide her home.
3. She remembers vividly the superstition and distrust that she faced once her 'condition' became public knowledge.
