---===Background===---:
Fidget began life as a normal raccoon. He remembers scattered bits of his early life: playing with his siblings, his mother teaching him to climb trees, scrounging for scraps at the edge of civilizations. That all changed one day when a magician named Kalius Quirt summoned a familiar. Fidget was sleeping in the bole of a tree, hollowed out by age and disease, within easy distance of human garbage, when he felt something odd. It was a mote of divinity, from the god of knowledge and magic, coursing through his body. He suddenly understood so much of the world around him and his place in it. He also 'felt' a presence, a human presence, not physically, but in his head. He knew that this human also felt the connection, and that he must find this person. Fortunately, it wasn't a far walk. He scampered up to the human who introduced himself...sort of. Fidget wasn't exactly sure what the human was saying but he got the gist of it. Kalius, blending both arcane and divine traditions, had entered into a magical arrangement and Fidget was part of it. At first, he was dead-set against the whole idea- it felt like slavery. But Kalius convinced him that it would be mutually beneficial, mostly by bribing him with herring. Fine, Fidget thought, I help you, you feed me, we'll see how this works out. As it happened, Fidget was a pretty good familiar. His mote somehow allowed him to know things about the world around him through touch. The problem was conveying this knowledge to Kalius. Kalius was a dedicated man, but impatient. How much like a kit this man was, Fidget thought. Perhaps that's why we were bonded. Fidget and Kalius had a pretty good relationship, overall, though they did squabble from time to time. Most commonly it had to do with Fidget's inability to see the same colors that Kalius saw. He would ask about a certain reagent or this or that metal, always forgetting that Fidget needed to TOUCH things to know what they were. In the end, this is also what ended their relationship. Upset at his inability to distinguish reagents for a particular mixture, Kalius foolishly didn't consult Fidget on an alchemical mixture. When heat was applied, the mixture exploded, turning Kalius into ash. Normally when something like this happens, the familiar is simply free of its responsibilities and can return to its former life. With Kalius' death, Fidget was free from the bond, but not sure what to do. For whatever reason, Fidget retained the divine spark. He certainly couldn't live among his own kind anymore, and he had grown accustomed to the convenience of living with humans... and their snacks. Fortunately, Kalius also had a sometimes girlfriend, Melina, who was fond of Fidget (she knew Fidget was smart, but had no idea of his abilities). She dropped by to check on Kalius, and discovered the accident. With tears in her eyes, she picked Fidget up, hugging him close. She adopted Fidget and took him with her, back to the monastery where her father worked as a steward, and she as a maid. Fidget felt like he had found a new home. All of the monks were very kind and treated him like a mascot. Unbeknownst to them, he was also learning some of their techniques. It seemed to fulfill a longing he had, an emptiness he hadn't known was there. Not too long afterwards (Fidget still has trouble with the concept of time... abstract conceptions, things he can't touch, just don't hold much meaning to him), many of the monks left to travel to another town, presumably to teach others, Fidget wasn't really listening. Fidget didn't intend on going with them, but had gorged on a basket of dried fish in their wagon and fallen asleep. By the time he woke up, he was well on his way. As it just so happens, the town to which they traveled had a tower of wizardry. He met a rabbit in town who encouraged him to drop by the tower and learn a little about life there. As this was a pretty similar lifestyle to the one he had lived with Kalius, he stuck around. Besides, there are some interesting critters there... and snacks.
World Choice: I'm actually open to whatever. It will only take a few tweaks to make Fidget fit anywhere. I'm most familiar with Golarian and Eberron, but I have passing familiarity with most of those worlds. |
