About Feng Jian

Background:
"Unfit!!!" Screamed the ugly visage of General Lei Long. His rancid breath taming the reeking manure just feet away. "Feng! You are unfit for service in my infantry. You bring shame to yourself and your family! Your dearly departed mother, Captain Wei weeps as your entire lineage shuns your cowardice."

The large hobgoblin General smiled broadly as he opened his arms wide. "What say you, troops? What do we do with those unfit?" "NO!", came the resounding answer in unison. "No....no indeed. A hobgoblin....even one unfit, still is superior to every other race. No, Feng. I have something very special in mind for you." He smiled even larger, as if that wretched face could contort even worse. "No, my young student. You are bound for a...desk job."

The entire barracks fell silent. Nothing could be worse.

"The General smiled again, "You will be the stable and animal pen quartermaster. A most prestigious position. When Master Huizhong needs the finest pig entrails and dung for his spells, your name with be sang to the wind. Rejoice, Emperor Offal, you shall make Kaoling proud!"

It wasn't long before I met Master Huizhong. My surprise was evident, as the old elf laughed to tears at seeing my face. He was ancient, though sharp in mind. He bore a large bronze chain about his neck, that shimmered slightly in the torchlight. His skill with magic and willingness to provide potions and poisons to General Lei Long without the least bit of hesitation gave him a small degree of freedom that no other slave has ever earned. His chain, I came to learn, would create a magnificent explosion, just enough to remove his head but not so much that it would cause too great of damage to the rest of the city. He must have seen in me something promising or maybe I amused him by annoying the General, but he came by often for ingredients and in exchange for information about the bombastic Lei Long, he taught me how to shoot a bow, told me hunting techniques and most importantly the appreciation of tea.

I learned a great deal from Master Huizhong, but what I didn't know was how much he learned from me. It was one particularly hot afternoon that Huizhong came to me in a frenzy. His eyes were wild and steely. He thrust a sack filled with some food, a few coins, a find bow and quiver and heavy cloak. Staring at him in confusion, he said with confidence, "I'm afraid that I've gone and done something unwise and a bit brash. When I give you the signal, you run and don't stop running until you are over the throat of the world and into the a distant land. Remember all I taught you, hide your tracks and hunt often. Keep moving.

At that instant, General Lei Long burst through the stable doors. "You godless leaf-eating fool! You have outstayed your usefulness! Steal from me and Kaoling will you? You will pay with your life!" As the General advanced on Master Huizhong, he moved like a snake, almost too fast to see. With one swift movement, he bound a chain to his own and clasped it about the General's neck and smiled. "I have increased the potency of your device. You'll find it's much more explosive now. See you in the next life, Lei Long" With a wink to me, he nodded. I ran as fast as I my legs would allow. I can still remember the sound four of your city blocks being demolished all in one instant.

I eventually made my way here to Sandpoint, I hear that the tea is excellent. Perhaps if I can keep my identity secret, I can leave before trouble starts.
