Spoiler:
For Lof or JR he was "volunteered" by his father to important NPC as a favor to the NPC's family.

Consider the 'court hostage' background. Or consider that he was a servant to a noble family and he learned from watching them.

Alternately, Felix disgraced his family through many scandals and was disowned. He was drummed out of the Andoren military unit for unbecoming conduct but he kept his uniform and armor against regulations.

If not disowned outright, his family pulled strings to get him into the Pathfinder Society.
