The one thing the movies all had in common was that sending someone back in time was a difficult process that could only occur that one time and then a new machine or method had to be created.
Actually, the single Terminator and single Resistance Fighter in the first movie is because Skynet only had time to send a single T-800 back before John and the Resistance busted into the core complex. John sent Kyle back, then blew up the building, destroying both the time machine and killing Skynet. T1 wasn't about changing the future, it was about ensuring that John Connor would be there to lead the Resistance to victory.
The remaining films never bothered to justify the survival of Skynet, the creation of additional time machines or why Skynet didn't send hordes through the gate. They didn't even explain how a T-1000 or T-X was capable of time travel, when they lack an organic sheath.
That is the crux of my one big problem with the series... in the opening recap of virtually every episode we see cromartie's meatless tin noggin bouncing out of the time travel lightningstorm. Of course now that big, recurring continuity error is out in the open, perhaps it will be addressed --- is retroactively the right word, with the entire premise predicated on time travel? --- particularly now, that it's been revealed skynet sent a t1000 to insure it's being built.
