About Fatima of the Desert

As a young girl, Fatima was found wandering in the desert outside of Katheer by a merchant caravan. Dehydrated and delusional, she could not remember who she was or where she was from. The caravan leader questioned her extensively about her parents and homeland, but Fatima could remember nothing of her past, although she tried to answer the caravaneers' questions in Kelish once her parched tongue could speak. The wife of the nearby caravanserai owner took pity on her and let her stay.

Taken in at the edge of the desert, Fatima grew up listening to the stories of caravan guards and camel drivers preparing to embark for the east, and nomads journeying off the shifting sands who spoke of strange beasts and the menacing cataphracts of the north. The quick-witted girl listened closely to the songs and stories of the caravanserai's constantly changing milieu, hoping to hear a name or tale that would remind her of who she was.

She remembered each one of the songs and tales, and would repeat them to visitors to her adoptive parents' tent. Men coming off the desert who had been away for years listened enraptured as she sang life into the songs and stories they had told her at their first departure. The caravanserai soon became locally famous for "the girl who can sing in a thousand voices" and Fatima was proud of her growing renown.

But the applause and kudos never touched the void inside of her, and the songs and stories never reminded her of her real name. So finally, when she felt she could earn her own way on the strength of her singing, she left to seek her fortune and tear aside the veil of her past.
She prays for the day she will no longer be known as...
