Born to a female Orc after she was recovered alive from a battlesite, Falaja was left out in the forest to die. Her mother had been raped while unconcious by a human warrior. The thought of a human male having touched her made the young Orc woman determined to end the pregnancy. Only the Shaman of her clan stopped her. He'd seen a vision and knew the child must be born. Nothing could make her keep the female child that was born, however, and the midwifes' assistant took the baby out to the forest when the mother turned her back on what she saw as her shame.
When the assistant had gone, Sorom Dreamtaker came out from hiding and gathered up the tiny, silent bundle. He looked into deep blue eyes that had opened when he picked her up. "Falaja," he said gently. "You will be known as Falaja." He set out toward a nearby human settlement where he was known by the village healer.
Claire Shadowsong opened the door in answer to the short, sharp rap. "Sorom Dreamtaker, what brings ye to my door this night?" she asked opening the door wider and ushering him in. A squeak from the bundle he bore kindled her curiosity even more. The shaman turned to her and held out the bundle, which began to squirm slightly. She automatically reached to take it from him and only belatedly realized she might have made a mistake. Adjusting the bundle to a proper hold, she flipped up the warm cloth covering what she assumed was the head. "Pharasma bless us!", she exclaimed, "Where is the mother of this child?" Sorom replied, "She refused her.", he replied. "And why do you bring her to me?" Claire asked with a touch of exasperation to her voice. The shaman replied, "Because you have need of an apprentice and this child has need of a mother." Claire made to hand back the child, but the old shaman put his hands behind his back and stepped away. Claire sputtered, "I'm too bedamned old to be raising a child, Sorom! Find someone in your clan to take her. She could apprentice to you as well as me." Sorom shook his head, a look of sorrow on his tusked face. An old battlescar pinched above his broad brow as his head bent. "With the rejection of her mother, she was left in the forest to die. Our females seldom keep such children of war, regarding them as proof of their shame." His large forefinger reached to gently touch the cheek of the child. He looked back to the village healer. "I will come and assist with her training when she comes to an age to learn. I saw this child in a vision. She will be a Shaman, but more than a Shaman." He looked again to the baby, who had gripped as much of his finger as her tiny hand could fit around, "She will need us both." Claire sighed with resignation. "I cannot argue with your visions, old friend. Stay here with her for a time while I go see about getting the supplies I'll need." As she grabbed a cloak and opened the door to leave she turned back to ask another question, "Has the little one a name?" Sorom nodded, "I have called her Falaja."
