Fey Magic: (only in mountains/hills) Create Water, Purify Food and Drink, Know Direction, Charm Animal
Focused Spells (Su): Once per day the spell sage's understanding of spells allows him to increase his caster level by 4 for a single spell cast.
Spell Study (Su): The sage's understanding of the spells of bards, clerics, and druids is so great that he can use his own magic in an inefficient, roundabout way to duplicate those classes' spells. Once per day, a spell sage can spontaneously cast any spell on the bard, cleric, or druid spell list as if it were a wizard spell he knew and had prepared. Casting the spell requires the spell sage to spend 1 full round per spell level of the desired spell (if the spell is on multiple spell lists indicated above, using the lowest level from among those lists) and requires expending two prepared spells of that spell level or higher; if the spell's casting time is normally 1 full round or longer, this is added to the spell sage's casting time. For example, if a spell sage wants to use spell study to cast cure light wounds (cleric spell level 1st), he must spend 2 full rounds casting and expend two prepared wizard spells of 1st level or higher.

Background:
House Ebonhawk
The Barony of Ebonhawk holds the newly-created Warmshores, a hilly coastal country west of Suzail where the western edge of Cormyr meets the Dragonmere. The primary business of Ebonhawk is the growing of crops. The house's military forces consist primarily of a contingent of lancers led by the the house head, Baron Estelner Ebonhawk. Estelner was quite young when he took the Ebonhawk seat and is often seen as a bit of a dunderhead by other members of the Cormyrian nobility. Although eager to show well among the other nobles, the baron both nervous and inept with his weapon, despite leading the lancers.

Ethaniel's Childhood
Shortly after the Baroness Ebonhawk (Estelner's wife Leeya), began carrying a child her health began to decline at a perilous rate. Hoping for improvement, the Baron moved her to a mountainside estate in the Stormhorns. Estelner was soon called away by his duties, and shortly after Leeya died during childbirth. Distraught, Estelner could not bring himself to even visit his son and Ethaniel's upbringing was left to the staff at the estate. Ethaniel grew to be somewhat of a wild child in his very early youth, often fleeing into the mountains much to the chagrin of his nurses. Nevertheless, he appeared to have some uncanny knack for returning from these adventures unharmed.

Realizing the he couldn't avoid his son forever, the Baron eventually invited Ethaniel to return to the heart of the Ebonhawk barony by offering him a spot among the lancers. Although Ethaniel had quite an affinity for animals and became a decent rider, his lack of discipline made him wholly unfit to continue along the path of a lancer. At a loss, Estelner hoped to kill two birds with one stone by offering Ethaniel up as an apprentice to Az'zel the Wise.

The Apprenticeship
Az'zel the Wise (more frequently referred to as Az'zel the Mad, although never to his face) was a squatter who had rather abruptly appeared in the Warmshores shortly after Ethaniel was born. When questioned he always offered extremely contradictory accounts of his past and his intentions - although one the most frequent threads was that he was an agent and recruiter for the War Wizards. Although never observed practicing any actual magic, his increasing demands for new recruits to 'test' became seen as threats by the common folk of the barony.

Partially afraid to confront the supposed wizard and partially out of curiosity, Estelner finally offered his own son as an apprentice. Under Az'zel's tutelage, Ethaniel discovered a strange fascination with the very orderly discipline of wizardry despite his wild nature. Although he still never witnessed Az'zel performing a scrap of actual magic, Ethaniel made excellent progress due to his tutor's vast and encyclopedic knowledge of all things magical.

One day, Ethaniel turned up to Az'zel's dwelling to find the place mysteriously ransacked, the place practically humming with some sort of vile magic. Az'zel himself was nowhere to be found, until a small thrush appeared from the wreckage and, speaking perfect common, claimed to be Az'zel. All that the Az'zel the bird could remember was that someone or something had attacked and gotten the better of him and in a desperate bid for survival, Az'zel transferred his own soul into the nearest living creature - a thrush - while his body was carried off by his assailants. Unsure what to believe, Ethaniel set off with the fractured mind of his former master contained in a thrush in hopes of learning more.

Ethaniel, who's been busy craning his neck to get a better look at the rafters, finally snaps to attention to find Sir Luke standing in the middle of the room unannounced. After failing to spot his father anywhere, he makes a mad grab for a wine goblet which he nearly shatters with a sharp tap from a spoon. After his hasty call for attention, Ethaniel
