Essua Day’s swordplay style isn’t what you’d expect from a fencer. He’s nimble and powerful; he has the finesse of a cultured, studied connoisseur. But he moves like a pugilist, using the power and strength of his entire frame with every strike. He’s not a perry and retreat fighter— he’s a precision puncher that strikes quick and deep.
While he prefers his rapier in a fight, he can hold his own with his family carving knives, given to him on his 13th birthday when he was first invited by his father into the butcher shop’s killing floor.
Essua’s strength was developed working in his family’s butcher shop, where he had special talent for coaxing beasts into the next world humanely and respectfully. For this reason, he has always disdained ranged weapons, preferring to look at the faces of the lives he’s charged to take.Killer Trait
Also, he’s got amazing skills with meat. Seriously, you’ve never tasted anything like his smoked brisket seasoned with the Day family recipe. As an added bonus, he’s familiar as anyone raised in a temple infirmary on the healing effects of herbs. Caretaker Trait
Essua has mastered the butchery arts, become and accomplished swordsman, and can pinpoint the thin line between life and death. But he can’t help but look wistfully at the Pathfinders who pass through his family shoppe, loading up on travel supplies and preparing to head out on their fantastic adventures. He can’t help but believe there must be more to life than his experience has shown him.
And so on his 17th birthday, after a painful conversation with his mother, father, and little sister Aina, he left for Absalom.
