Erlich was recruited by the Tyr Diplomatic Corps on Athas early in his 20’s and trained extensively for intellectual property theft using clandestine operations, under diplomatic cover as co-pilot and attaché guard.
Erlich was aware since youth of spacetravel, orbiting stations, far off worlds, but once he experienced them, he dreaded every return trip to his hot, barren, desolate home and made every effort to get back to field work and exotic worlds, requesting longer and more distant postings; all were denied.
He enjoyed a decent measure of success on his missions, low-level as they were, and hampered by his homeworld’s lack of advanced crypto-breaking methodology. Returning to his vessel after a very dangerous and lucrative mission on Chissek Station, Erlich found the crew and staff arrested and the ship seized.
Avoiding the guards and getting aboard, he scrubbed the vessel of its records and installed and executed a virus destroying the personnel and operations files for the ship before stealthily making his exit.
Standard Operations called for the crew and staff to confirm no knowledge of his whereabouts or actions, indeed, they might have assumed he was already caught or executed. Over a year of living clandestinely on Chissek station opened his eyes to the black market there, smuggling, a universe of possibilities.
After 14 months, Erlich returned to Athas aboard a freelance freighter in desperate need of a pilot, and reported back to the Diplomatic Corps. He was imprisoned for six years on drummed-up charges stemming from the incident at Chissek. Did his time, was discharged from confinement determined to get off this blasted planet for good.
