Fluff:
From birth Jekaterina was augured to be special, born on an astral conjunction said to be auspiced by Pharasma herself. Her father was a Shoanti of the Skoan-Quah, the Clan of the Skull, and her mother a Korvosan peasant herbalist in a hamlet near Sirathu, not far from the Cinderlands. Life was hard in that region at the best of times, harder still for those of mixed bloodlines. In her youth she was a beauty, and married well from humble beginnings - her half-caste status did not prevent her beauty from catching the eye, and heart, of a wealthy merchant's son from Harse - but his parents disapproved of the union, and when he wed her they dismissed him from their family entirely. Jekaterina's life from her wedding was hard, but happy. Her husband worked as a lumber and trapping agent, forging new ties his parents would not touch with the rugged frontiersmen and the Shoanti relatives who would sometimes visit from the plateau to the north, while Jekaterina carried on her mother's trade as a herbalist and sometime mid-wife, learning new tribal medicine skills from her father's sisters. She was blessed with three daughters and two sons of her own, and in turn her children had children of their own. She passed into middle age, her life seeming set for peace if not prosperity. It is in the wisdom of the gods that the sickness that came to her was brought by her own people, though they were unaffected by it themselves. Shoanti traders carried a virus that decimated the population for miles around. Her husband, children and grandchildren all succumbed to the ravages of the Wasting Fever, and one by one they passed away into the forever. Although Jekaterina asked her husband's people for help they forsook their son and his children, a slight she has never forgotten or forgiven. All throughout Jekaterina had been free of the sickness, perhaps due to her mixed-Shoanti blood, but eventually she too succumbed, grief stricken, feverish, worn out. For five nights she fought the illness, while her aunt, a Shoanti wise-woman tended to her and enacted tribal incantations to secure her survival. Whether Pharasma deigned to save her life, or scour her soul is unknowable to all but the mightiest savants. Needless to say, Jekaterina ultimately lived, but marked forever as a wounded healer. She left her ruined home, vowing never to return. She has nothing now to live for but the experiences left to her in this life, and the succour she may bring to others in her path. Walking as far as she could away from Sirathu, she found herself in Magnimar and yet still she wished to escape the Chelaxian taint she blames for the deaths of her family. Her money low, she looks for work to book passage or maybe become a ship's healer for the passage south. Appearance:
Jekaterina is a striking woman in her late forties. Tall, lithe and with a shock of white hair kept tightly braided and bound. She was obviously a very attractive woman in her youth, and although the strain of five births has affected her little, nor the passage of years - the wasting curse has wreaked the change that mars her beauty.
Although she still possesses the fine bone structure and bearing of a beautiful woman, her skin is taut and pale, her tendons and muscles tight on her bones. To counter this Jekaterina covers all of her skin except her hands and face, and meticulously applies cosmetics to mask the worst of the wasting curse. Ironically, the frontier-woman habit of pipe-smoking has never left her, and she still maintains the habit, a slender pipe clamped between her teeth lends her a serene and contemplative air that masks the rage she feels inside. Her stature is still strong, her rural life leaving her physically fit and vital if outwardly scarred and emaciated. She carries a neat travelling kit, and her armor and weapons are well kept. Ornate Shoanti lamellar bone arm and leg pieces protect her limbs, and the heavy flail she carries is a gift from her father. Her spears, buckler and daggers are likewise of Shoanti make. Motivations:
Although somewhat wiser than the average mortal, Erina is a vain woman. Her fleeing looks are a constant sorrow for her, and as such she spends an inordinate amount of time trying to counteract the visual effects of her wasting curse. She wishes to find a mundane or magical way to delimit the ravages to her skin and muscles, so that she can retain what her fine bone structure has gifted her throughout her life.
Erina's tragic past and relatively late start to an adventuring career lead her to be introspective and moody - she has no clearcut desire for any particular thing except to escape that past and find a semblance of peace and to restore her former beauty. Korvosans and Chelaxians will feel the brunt of her disdain and she will be hard put to entertain them with grace. However, she is not stupid, and can respect those who comport themselves with honour, and respect themselves. |
