Boon: Gluttony; Erden is disciplined in most things and finds overeating or over-drinking to be distasteful and a weakness of character. Bane: Lust; Much to his own shame, Erden has a weakness for beautiful women. He can sometimes be distracted by beautiful women when he should be focused on something else. However, he consoles himself with the idea that Sarenrae does not forbid dalliances as long as her worshippers are honest in their intentions and only court willing participants. After all, Sarenrae's worshippers are all imperfect and must strive every day to improve themselves. Ten Minute Background
1. Background:
•Both parents are members of the faithful of Sarenrae, Erden's father, Klarus, a cleric and his mother, Palomine, a Paladin. His elder sister, Katarina, is also a member of the church, a talented cleric who seems blessed by Sarenrae. •His family's home is located in Korvosa, and his family, the Suntowers are a minor noble house with a modest Cliffside townhouse in the Heights district. •His parents both taught him the tenets and values of Sarenrae from a young age. However, he found service as a knight of the faith, a Paladin like his mother, to be much more interesting than the studying and ceremonies required to be a cleric. •Early on in his service to the church, he met a young boy named Rask, who was a similar age to himself. He found out that Rask was an orphan, living in the Shingles, and had been injured by some thugs while stealing food. The thugs had seen him steal the food and followed him, seeing an easy target. Erden, having lived in comfort his whole life, was exposed to the struggle many folks suffered every day. The meeting was life-affirming for Erden, reinforcing his faith in Sarenrae, and he became fast friends with Rask, constantly trying to get the good-natured rogue to renounce his thieving ways. Rask on the other hand, constantly tried to introduce his friend to the joys in life; drinking, gambling and beautiful women. He only partially succeeded; Erden being tall, muscular and handsome was an instant hit with the ladies and, much to his own shame, Erden found he had a weakness for beautiful women too. However, he consoles himself with the idea that Sarenrae does not forbid dalliances as long as her worshippers are honest in their intentions and only court willing participants. After all, Sarenrae's worshippers are all imperfect and must strive every day to improve themselves. •Erden has just been raised to a full knight in the service of Sarenrae. His first assignment is to help with the opening of the new temple in Sandpoint, a task which should be easy while still allowing him to prove himself. He was given a Silver holy symbol of Sarenrae and a new copy of The Birth and Light of Truth, Sarenrae's holy text, with empty pages towards the back to fill in with the uplifting stories he encounters on his journey. He left Korvosa almost two months ago, helping to provide protection to a travelling Varisian caravan going to Magnimar in exchange for food and company on the road. After reaching Magnimar, he continued by himself on foot, only reaching Sandpoint a few days before the festival, which he spent helping the local Priest, Father Zantus, to prepare for the festival. He is currently staying in the Rusty Dragon Inn, planning on staying long enough until the new temple is running smoothly. 2. Goals:
•Complete his first assignment and help the temple to open its doors once more to the people of Sandpoint. •Prove himself to his parents by following in their footsteps; Helping show the less fortunate the light of the Dawnflower, bringing those misinformed souls back into Sarenrae's healing light and removing the truly evil from the world through her cleansing flames, wherever said services might be needed. 3. Secrets:
•Erden once had a fling with a young barmaid who was being pursued, against her will, by the leader of a Sczarni gang. The leader, one Eugeni Barof, took offence and tried to knife Erden. Rask, through his street contacts, found out only hours before it was to occur but still managed to warn Erden. Forewarned, Erden, Rask and a few of Rask's friends managed to give Eugeni a sound thumping, in their mind solving the issue. •Unbeknownst to Erden, once he left on his assignment to Sandpoint, Eugeni decided to get revenge for Erden "stealing his beloved" and the humiliation he suffered by being beaten by him. He plans on attacking Rask when his capable friend is no longer near. 4. Character Relationships:
•Erden's Family, the Suntowers •Rask, his roguish best friend •Eugeni Barof, humiliated gang leader 5. Memories:
• Erden was sitting at his desk in the study in their family home, his father Klarus, reciting another of the Holy Prayers to be used for some rite or another in the church. His sister, Katarina, was at a desk to his left, listening intently. Erden, however, was remembering the wrist movement his mother had shown him yesterday for deflecting a heavy blow with a scimitar, his chin braced on his two hands on the desk in front of him. I nearly had it yesterday, if I just move my wrist like that instead, I’m sure it’ll work properly next time! His thoughts were interrupted abruptly when his Father called his name; ”Erden. Can you recite the first verse of the prayer for me please?” Uh-oh, Erden thinks to himself, straightening in his chair. ”Uh… Sarenrae, Lady of Light….give us your cleansing light…uh……”. There’s an awkward pause as Erden fails to recall the prayer. ”Sorry, father, I wasn’t paying full attention. I got distracted again.” Erden says, hanging his head. His sister pipes up from the desk beside him, ”Sarenrae, Lady of The Cleansing Flame grant us, the servants of your Will, the power of your Healing Light, that we may carry out your Orders and combat the will and servants of the Rough Beast, thwarting his evil schemes.” Erden begins squirming in his chair. ”Excellent, Katarina, you got the intonations just right as well!”, Klarus says. Erden’s squirming gets worse. Klarus turns back to Erden and sighs. ” Go on Erden, go join your mother in her training. You won’t be able to concentrate at all when you’re like this.” Erden’s face brightens and he smiles, ”Thanks Father, sorry for forgetting the prayer.” Erden gets up quickly and heads towards the door, already thinking of how he could try the deflection again. "Wait!", Klarus says, ”You must practice with your sister later, until you can recite the verse properly, without hesitation.” ”Yes, Father, of course!” Erden says with excitement. Klarus sighs again, ”Fine, off you go then.” Erden leaves the room quickly before his father can change his mind. •Erden is sitting at a table in The Creaky Hammock, a tavern in Korvosa, with his friend Rask. Erden, much to Rask’s disapproval, is sipping a watered wine while Rask chugs back strong ales. “And then, the firecracker went off and he turned around. I pulled down his britches and pushed him over and made a run for it,” Rask finishes with a laugh. “You should’ve seen his face, it was priceless!” ”Did you really have to humiliate him like that,” Erden asks, with a faint note of disapproval. ”Oh, come off it, Erden! It was hilarious! You would’ve been laughing your head off if you were there”, Rask replies. Just then the barmaid saunters by behind Rask, catching Erden’s eye. Sarenrae forgive me, but she is an attractive lady, Erden thinks to himself. Rask, noticing his friend’s distraction, begins smiling deviously. ” Elsie, come here for a moment will ya?”, Rask says. The barmaid saunters back over, ”Yes Rask, what is it?” ”You know that Erden here is training as a Knight of Sarenrae right? Surely you’ve noticed how he has more muscle than sense”, Rask says indicating Erden’s chiselled physique. Elsie slowly looks Erden up and down and then smiles, ”Now that you mention it, I did notice, yes. Knight of Sarenrae, eh?” she says with interest. ”Yes, that’s a fact, and one of the most promising recruits in years if what I’ve heard is true. Say, did I hear you had a bad cut recently after one of the customers threw a bottle?” Rask asks her. Elsie frowns and then replies, ”Yeah, I slipped and fell on the broken glass and got a bad cut on my leg. It stills hurts sometimes.” Rask shakes his head melodramatically, ”That’s a terrible shame. Hmmm…. You know, Sarenrae’s followers are usually pretty good with healing things like that. Maybe you should get Erden to have a look, he might be able to help?”, Rask says with an innocent expression on his face. Elsie turns back to Erden with interest, ”Is that true?”, she asks. Erden looks over at Rask, who winks subtlety at him, and then back to Elsie and then puts on his most charming smile. ”Yes, my Lady, Sarenrae often provides her followers with a healing touch, it is said that her most favoured can even bring back the dead. She is the Lady of The Healing Light, after all”, Erden replies. Elsie lets out a tinkling laugh, ”Please, just Elsie, I’m no Lady”, she says with a coy smile. ”Do you think you could take a look? The cut hasn’t fully healed and can be terribly painful sometimes“, Elsie says, placing her hand on Erden’s muscled forearm. ”Of course, it would be no trouble at all“, Erden replies, excitement building in his chest. ”Excellent!“, Elsie says. ”We can go to my apartment, it’s close by and I have some bandages and a healing salve for the cut that you can use there“, she says with another coy smile. She shouts at the bartender, ”Destin, I’m taking my break now. I’ll be back in….“, she looks back at Erden and then turns back to the barkeeper, ”….a few hours.“ She grabs Erden by the hand and pulls him towards the door, ”Come on, it’s this way“, she says, smiling coyly again. Sarenrae, I promise that I will actually try to help with the wound, he prays mentally, Please forgive your servant for being weak. As he crosses the tavern, his hand being pulled intently by Elsie, he looks back at Rask, who shouts ”I’ll see you later!“, gives him a mischievous grin and two thumbs up. •”Excellent, just like that…..“, Erden’s mother Palomine says, as he swings his practice scimitar in the exact form she showed him earlier. ”….but…..,“ she whips out with her practice sword, hitting Erden painfully on the elbow, ”….keep your shield up!“. ”Again! We’re going to keep doing this until you can do it in your sleep. Then, I’ll teach you something new.“ Erden repeats the form, this time with his shield up. ”Perfect!“ his mother says. ”Now, do it again. Faster this time.“ Erden continues to perform the sword form, getting slightly faster each time, the simple exertion and repetition filling him with contentment. Tenets of Sarenrae's Paladins:
The paladins of the Dawnflower are fierce warriors, like their goddess. They provide hope to the weak and support to the righteous. Their tenets include:
• I will seek out and destroy the spawn of the Rough Beast. If I cannot defeat them, I will give my life trying. If my life would be wasted in the attempt, I will find allies. If any fall because of my inaction, their deaths lie upon my soul, and I will atone for each. • I am fair to others. I expect nothing for myself but that which I need to survive. • The best battle is a battle I win. If I die, I can no longer fight. I will fight fairly when the fight is fair, and I will strike quickly and without mercy when it is not. • I will redeem the ignorant with my words and my actions. If they will not turn toward the light, I will redeem them by the sword. • I will not abide evil, and will combat it with steel when words are not enough. I do not flinch from my faith, and do not fear embarrassment. My soul cannot be bought for all the stars in the sky. • I will show the less fortunate the light of the Dawnflower. I will live my life as her mortal blade, shining with the light of truth.
