About Emil Mordrane

Background:
With an unceremonious thud, Emil found himself out in the street again, face first in what he desperately wanted to believe was mud. Oh who are you kidding, he thought to himself. That's horse dung. Somewhere behind him, the rambunctious men who had teamed up to throw him out laughed raucously as they tossed his pack alongside. Well at least that didn't hit the dung. A snorting sound from above made him look up. "Yes Flora. Again. Don't laugh at me" he began as he got himself up and began to make his way towards the horse's water trough, a bay-colored mare trotting besides him conciliatorialy. "Well, he is a fat-ass. No, I didn't bring it up at first, but he called me a dirty southener. Yes, I also told him to go back to fondling women bigger than him. And to tell his wife I said hi." he continued as he washed the filth from his face as best he could. Once it was gone, he looked into the water's reflection to see a boy, barely a man with scruffy black hair streaked with grey. Satisfied, he wiped what water was in his deep green eyes and continued his apparent one-sided talk with the horse. "Seriously though Flora, do you think I stand a chance at this?" he asked, looking down the sparsely traveled street, through the wide open town gate and towards the mountains in the east. And as he did so his mind began to reflect back on the events that brought him here.

"Are you sure you want to do this? Brevoy is thousands of leagues from here, and you'd have to cross Galt and the rest of the River Kingdoms to
get there. Bloody dangerous. Lethal even. Especially for someone like you; those River Kingdom rats always have something to prove. And I won't even talk about those blood-crazed Galtans. Barbaric anarchists, the lot of them. Bah!"
opined a disapproving Sir Humphreys Dunitee of the Taldane Horse, 4th column, 7th squadron as Emil finished packing his meager belongings in the cell that had been his to call home within the Yanmass Bank of Abadar. Sir Humphrey frowned. The boy was ignoring him. A recent development in the boy who had been a model of squiredom. Eager, discrete, efficient, good with the beasts. All of that over a crest on an old shield. The older man pursed his lips as he pulled on his moustache, and decided to try a differant tack. "My boy, I understand that finding your father's family means a great deal to you, given your mother's... Well... Everything to be blunt. But you do not know anything for certain. For all you know she could have had placed those things on his grave to lead on a wild goose chase away from her and the likely location of any other clues to your father's lineage." He strode up and put his hand on the young man's shoulder in a conciliatory manner. "I understand curiosity; though I don't approve of the nasty habit. But this ... This will lead you away from your grand-uncle and away from any sort of position within the Taldane Horse. My boy... It will lead you away from any sort of civilized society; I do not care how "civilized" they think they are up there. Warlords, the lot of them, five steps removed from cannibalism at best" he finishes lamely as the final buckle is tightened and Emil turns to look at him. Sir Dunitee has aged much in the decade Emil knew him. He swallows heavily, emotion knotting his throat as he knows this could very well be the last time he sees the man. "My lord, I understand what you are saying. And the appeal of glorious service in the Horse ... It was not an easy decision. But... I need to do this; to learn more about my father's people, his house, his name... I need to understand what he was; and you know that I would never be fully accepted among the other knights. My Galtish heritage... Up there, things will be different. I know it!" he finished with a smile as he slung the pack upon his shoulder, sending his strapped weapons swinging.

Yeah, things are different alright, he thought to himself bitterly as he gathered the spilled parts of his kit. I won't give her the satisfaction of giving up though, he mused as his mind drifted back once again to a different moment on his journey. "They won't be what you think they will be" said Anabel neutrally, her lined face as devoid of emotion as her tone. Emil sighed and tore off another piece of bread, popping it into his mouth as he put a foot onto the table, eliciting a angry stare from the innkeeper. But it's intended target barely even blinked as she continued: "Brevoy is a step away from civil war and it's noble houses have somewhow conjured up more arrogance than highborns in either Cheliax or Taldor. You'll be eaten alive. I doubt that what Anthon had in mind for his only son."
-Oh so now you talk about him.
-There is little to talk about with you in his regard. He died before you could speak his name.
-At the hands of your fellow Gardeners. How does it feel, knowing that they would behead you without a second thought if they knew what stock you come from
, he sneers angrily.

She doesn't reply and Emil takes the opportunity to check out the window at the barge he paid passage on for himself and Flora. The men seem to be almost done loading the boat for their travel upstream. Soon he will be out of his mother's presence. "I know you disapprove of me. Of what I do. I wish I could show you I do the things I do out of love for you. I wish I could be like others and tell you of how much you remind me of him; how I loved him; how his loss crippled me. But maybe that is something you'll have to come to understand for yourself. Maybe then you'll understand why I sent you to live with your grand-uncle and his fellow Abadarians. Why I pushed you to learn among them. Why I forbade you to come back." She began to stand up, smoothing her vest and checking her weapons. "I trust you won't mention your name when you dock within Galt. Not many people remember the de Mordranes but enough will, and those will no doubt be the most dangerous ones." Emil gave her a biting smile. "Trust me. I don't intend to linger. Or have anything that could possibly have to do with you."

Satisfied that he hadn't left anything around, Emil slid his backpack into one of his mount's saddlebags and jumped back into the saddle. "C'mon
Flora. We have another day's worth of travel."
Clicking his tongue, he guides the horse onwards towards the gates, his mind drifting back only
a couple days.

"I am certain we appreciate the effort you have made to look into your lineage. But I believe the point my dearest wife is trying to make is that you embody nothing but painful memories of a cherished son." said the elderly man in a paternal tone that managed to be both condescending and flippant as he poured himself a glass of some expensive wine from a crystal decanter. The manor home was expansive at first sight, and Emil's awe only grew as he was accompanied into the Lebeda waiting room and finally into their salon, to meet with Lord and Lady Lebeda. But that awe began turning to discomfort, then anger and shame as Lord Piotr Lebeda continued. "Anthon was murdered by your people. We grieved and made our piece with his abscence, knowing that he would not join his ancestors in the beyond; something I'm sure you know nothing about, being a southerner. Your existence is a stain upon his memory, but to ask for our recognition, that is to ask us to further spit upon it." He took a sip of the expensive alcohol, paused for effect and concluded: "Perhaps it is best if you left southerner. You do not have anything that interests us and we have nothing to offer you."

The humiliation of that day still ran hot in Emil's blood. I'll show them. I'll show them all.
