I don't think there is a worry about Gan getting killed by us. I think the bigger problem will be just getting the group together. So far there isn't a lot of pull the other way, not backing us in the fight and then showing some contempt sort of put him in the 'against us' category while they were trying to form their alliance.

I'm not looking to cause any more trouble among those who don't start it so there aren't any fights coming up, but since at this point we sort of think that Gan would leave us hanging to save his own skin we aren't so likely to have our private conversations with him around, and that seems like it will end up being a building problem.

Hopefully it will sort out.

Nah, with my luck I'm better off just being proud of the fact I was just ignored. That seems to be a step up the ladder for me. I'll just relax and chat with Sabinae.

Elthas nods his head at Sabinae's mention. "I imagine that once they get the feeling that we want to be here, you'll be less of a prisoner. Or at least if they need to let you off for a bit and see you don't try to escape that trust may be earned. Its a tough spot they've got you in. If I can come up with anything to help, you'll have it."

Elthas gives a quick nod to Plugg, and offers a salute. "One of them took a chunk out of my arm, sir. If they weren't sick before, they likely are now."

With that comment he moves over and sets off getting to work, trying to ignore some of his tiredness in order to burn through the task.

DM:
Since I missed the chance and would prefer not to be beaten unconscious, I'm going to work diligently today, taking care to haul the rope to the best of my ability.

In the evening, I'm going to spend a bit of time chatting with Peppery, trying to get a feel for our sailing master. Just chatting about her experience on a ship and what brought her here(with skulls revelation about the crew being new, I am curious if even those who hold a bit of status have been press ganged.)

If everyone gets weapon-ed out, I would appreciate one of the daggers, but that is assuming that everyone else has a weapon they can use(I have my staff already, just can't hand of the apprentice with it) and the fighter types have something better. I don't mind carrying any of the alchemical stuff, but I don't need anything else.

Once Gan storms off, Elthas sighs and shakes his head, looking at the others. "He made a good point about the captain, if you are an imposter, bringing on a crew who wouldn't know any better is a pretty solid choice. That may be our best hope of all the options, assuming the old captain didn't have any powerful enemies. Or friends for that matter".

He pauses and glances up the stairs after Gan "I can see problems coming from this. I'd rather not him be an enemy, we know he isn't under the captains thumb since he arrived same as us, but I can see him getting there awfully easily. Bit too ready to leave us to our fate to avoid hardship, not just saving his own life. Might want to play our cards a bit closer to the vest in the future, yeah? Don't have much interest getting ratted out to Plugg as troublemakers just so he can get out of a work detail. In any case, if he's already heading up we'd better hurry and follow. Don't want to be seen as lingering."

Though the others seem to take it in stride, Four Skull's revelations give Elthas a pause and he frowns, considering just what that may mean. "What I picked up more about the individual crew than the ship and its captain. I was a bit, embarrasingly, preoccupied with getting physically prepared rather than learning who we are under. I should know better."

Still thinking, he scratches his chin lightly. "Captain was supposed to be dead and a new crew, huh? That doesn't sound like a very good thing... Best case scenario sounds like he's making a return and trying to build up a fresh crew to facilitate this. Could be that he's gathered up a crew that he doesn't care about since he's looking for revenge against whatever left him 'dead' and don't expect too many to walk away."

He pauses again and gives a small shrug. "Maybe most likely, when someone in the less than legal fields turns up 'dead' it can be beneficial for them to stay that way, don't have to worry about corsairs coming searching for your body after all. If that is the case, then it will likely be him having us hit a loaded ship or port, maybe collect something he stashed from his living days that is in a defensible spot, then those who make it through whatever he has in mind will need to be disposed of so the captain can stay 'dead.' Dead men tell no tales and all that. I figure that is the best option from his point of view, either of the others we wouldn't be running a near skeleton crew."

Realizing he shifted to be a bit morbid in his considerations, Elthas stops and flashes a bit of a smile to the others. "In other words, since we were all dragged on here together, it seems best we watch each other's backs, yeah? Skull's here has given us a good head start, but we'd all better get our ears to the ground and start making friends. Will be good to know if we're just fodder or if we should expect a knife in our backs, and the more folks that like us the less folks will be pointing it."

Elthas puts a hand over the bite on his arm, putting some pressure on it as he peers around in the dim light from the shoanti's spear, seeing if he spots anything else moving about.

He flashes a smile to the mermaid, giving a small nod of his head. "Damn thing got me pretty good, but I'll be alright if you're spent Skull. Not that I would complain if you had something to spare."

He frowns a bit as he glances at the boxes he sprayed with the jet of water. "I had been basing my preparation off what I could do without my staff or pouch, but now that I have those in hand I can be a little more versatile. I can pull a hat trick out of my a$$ when needed, but I do a lot better when I'm ready in advance. On a ship I'd normally be more worried about making sure people could swim or breath if they needed to take a dip, but this ship is a bit more rough and tumble, we've been in a scrap every day so I may need to be ready for that instead. Thoughts?"

Since the second bite didn't get me after all I'm not in as bad of shape as I thought. Still down 3hp, but up to skulls what kind of spell power he has left whether that is worth healing.

Huzzah! Staff in hand and suddenly I am useful. Tomorrow I'll actually have spells prepped which require spell components and then they are really in trouble!

Being near the bottom of the round, I expect the two rats will be dead by the time my turn comes around. However, if its not:

Elthas raises a hand and points at one of the rats, even as he takes a step away. Speaking quietly, a burst of water sprays from his fingertips into the creature.

Five foot stepping away from any rats remaining and to try and give myself a better angle and casting hydraulic push. Basically want to just knock the rat back so the better fighters get an AoO on it.

Again I wanted to apologize for all my delays, but I am back in full force now and have things settled down.

And Sabinae, you're my hero!

When Sabinae gave him his staff:
When given his goods, Elthas will smile widely at her and immediately speak a few words to cast a spell, helping to ease the discomfort of the sun. Giving a wink of his own he adds. "You're a life saver, I'll make sure you don't regret it."

I would put Penumbra on her and keep it up as best I can. Only last 10 minutes right now, but will let her ignore the penalties for being dazzled. It won't help when on separate work duties, unfortunately, but since its a cantrip I'll keep it up whenever we are around each other.

So I don't disrupt combat, I'll just take a swing for my skipped action. However, if I am attacked again I'll be using Windy Escape as an immediate action. Just gives me DR 10/magic and lets me ignore crits/sneak attack, ect for a single attack. I'm at 0, so I don't want to get hit again.

I wanted to get an apology up. I've had a family emergency that had pulled me out of town and pretty much holed up in a hospital over the weekend. I'm back around now and just trying to get things settled around here, I'll have a real pose up tonight.

DM, you apologized for me not having any luck, but I have remained conscious for an entire day! This is a massive improvement to my predicament. Elthas may be panicky until he gets his staff back(its less about even being able to cast spells and more about it being part of him) but I'm enjoying the RP just fine even if he is a little worthless until he gets some gear.

Also, I'm going to shift up my prepped spells a bit since I have my spellbook back. It isn't going to matter a lot(I need to roll a 15 for a 0th level spell without my staff), but I'll shift them when we rest so I have a more likely to be effective spells whenever I can cast.

Elthas nods his head to Plugg, stepping back and away with a polite "Aye, sir, just want to offer what use I have, sir!" and then rapidly departs from the man so he doesn't anger him further.

Assuming at this point that he isn't going to get his stuff back any time soon, Elthas will be keeping an eye out for some of the things he suspects he will be able to find on a ship that he can use as components. If at any point I can see and pick up any of these things I will, DM. Bit of scrap leather, fish scale, sand, intact bladder I can inflate.

I'm not reading it that way, Four Skulls. We can let the DM chime in of course, but I can't think of anything that modifies an attribute's modifier rather than the attribute itself. Looking in the campaign info it says it gives a bonus to charisma.

As he sips on his rum, Elthas will consider the two higher-ups and who may be better to talk to. Neither of them are exactly pleasant characters, but while Scourge seems more a sadist, Plugg may at least listen to something that can benefit him rather than just immediately ordering another beating, so he is the one approached.

Elthas approaches respectfully, waiting until he is noticed and not interrupting anything the officer may be doing in the hope that letting the man feel his power a bit will help his case. "A word with you, sir? I'm trying to take to this life and by the code that means ensuring my talents benefit the crew and the ship. You and my back have already seen that my skill isn't in muscle, but I do have a bit of a knack for spells. I'm not asking to shirk my normal duties, sir, I'll still be a dedicated swab, but the quartermaster has my stick and pouch. They don't have a use to anyone else, but with them I could sure help the men in their day to day tasks. A hull repair goes much quicker if you don't have to come up for air, sir."

Woo-hoo a job I am good at. We're shooting for a day of consciousness.

Prof:Sailor 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

Based purely on the facts that a half-elf stands out on the crew and her name is 'Badger', Elthas spends his day chatting with Badger Medler while he works. He isn't the strongest or hardiest on the crew by far, but he does know his way around the ship and tries to show off a bit now that he's given a more skill based task. If he can, he will learn what he can of the girl's story and hope to add another person on the ship who isn't so likely to give them a wakeup like they had the day before.

Edit: Also, in the evenings would there be a chance to talk to plug or scourge(that way its not at a point where it looks like I am shirking my duties)?

I figured my chat with Sabinae was my freebie and I have weak wizardly arms for swabbing the deck, so I didn't want to be fatigued going into it. The intro to the adventure had me unconscious and I've been unconscious every in game day. I'd rather buck the trend.

Male Human Wizard 1, HP 7/7, NLHP 0/7, AC 11, Touch 11, Flat 11, F +1, R +1, W +3, Init +2, Perc +2

You said she healed me, by how much? Or just back up to full? The whipping itself would have put me unconscious unless she healed at least 5.

Once he is back on his feet, Elthas mutters quietly to himself about not having his stick, though even his welted back can't stop him from chuckling quietly to himself when he makes the whispered joke that Scourge should hand over his feet and we'd see his pathetic attempt at walking too.

In the evening, Elthas will try and catch Sabinae where he can talk to her a bit more privately, nodding towards the ball and chain on her tail.

Sabinae:
"You know a thing or two about hobbling. They've got my staff and pouch locked up in the quartermaster. Without the pouch, I'm a bow without arrows. Without the staff I don't have a bloody string. It may not be worth any coin, but the fact that my staff is valuable to me doesn't lead the quartermaster to give it up so easily, and frankly I don't think Scourge or Plugg are the sort of team players who will give it back just because I'll be able to help the crew. If I can get some decent booze, something a bit higher end than the rum, she offered me a trade. You're in the kitchen, do you think you could come up with something? If you can help me out on this, I may have something that can make your days a bit more comfortable, its just not going to work without that staff."

He pauses and gives a little nod towards Gan, giving a small grin. "If you turn me down my next option is hoping our ladies man coward over there can woo it out of here, so please help me out."

His demeanor sobers up some when Plugg gives his orders, simply nodding with an 'Aye, sir!' before setting off to work. On the way down he stops at the quartermaster to see what he can do about getting back some of his prized but not-valuable possessions.

Elthas will try and get his staff back if at all possible from the quartermaster, it has a 0gp value and hopefully he will be able to convince them that he can catch rats better if he has something to thump them with. If he thinks they can be convinced, he'll try and talk his way into his spell component pouch with the promise that with it he will be able to aid his fellows so their work will improve too.

Elthas swears quietly under his breath when the other pirates don't seem to back down from obviously threatening party. Stepping forward, he tries to 'disarm' the situation as it were, dipping in to snatch the dagger that Fipps has on his person, figuring it best to remove the weapon from the biggest hot-head.

Doing a steal manuever since it sounds like the daggers are just tucked into belts and such. Hoping that they aren't with improved unarmed strike so I don't provoke and maybe the shaken will save me on this one.

Also, Nico, Sandara gave you the spellbooks, did you return mine to me?

When interrupted by the new group, Elthas lightly sucks his teeth as he sizes them up, trying to spot the weak link. All of them look rough, but Fipps almost looks like the other's backing him up is what he's leaning on.

He lightly touches Nico's shoulder in a silent show of support while nodding at Four Skulls and adding his own words, never taking his eyes off the fat pirate. "Indeed. Cap'in doesn't wan't any dead, but how do you think he'll feel when you show up with a broken arm because you wanted to haze the new folk? I don't think we were giving much option, Felix, I think the first day at least we were told to swab the decks.

Also, I'm not sure what the DC is for the str/con check to avoid being fatigued when swabbing. Since both my stats are the same, if one of the DCs is lower, obviously I'd shoot for that one.

As he scrubs at the deck, working throughout the day, Elthas will chat politely with Sandara, trying to learn a bit more about the rest of the crew(trying to gather all their names) and just being friendly. If she seems open to the discussion, he would talk to her some about Besmara, and that he's always felt at home on the water and that Besmara has looked out for him even if his order follows Nethys.

Bloody hell, I just realized I don't have knowledge religion. When I asked about the holy symbol I was wondering why you picked out knowledge local instead. Failing in my basic 'knowing things' duties, damn you wizards and your 2 skill points!

Not looking to really influence Sandara other than showing I'm friendly and learning who is who in the crew. At night I will try and talk to the big guy who looked like he had tar on him if he will talk at all, I don't know if he's willing or a slave or talks at all so that would be my point of interest. No extra nighttime actions since I suspect I'm fatigued anyway.

Also, I'm one of those people who sort of compulsively makes notes about things. I figure in this case it will be helpful since Elthas is bright enough that he will probably remember things, so I've been trying to write things down from his point of view. For instance, while I know what class everyone is, he doesn't so I just have been jotting personality that has been shown and such.

I have made a google doc that inclues, PCs, NPCS, stuff I have picked up about the ship and just 'going ons'. I figured I would put up the link here if anyone decided they had interest or wanted to refer to things that may have happened down the line. I left it editable by anyone, so if you guys want to collaboratively add notes of your own, I'm all good with that though it will probably make it easier if we each use different text color.

Elthas gives a small bow of thanks towards Sandara and then a bit of a nod towards Plugg. "I'm not the most skilled in the kitchen, but I've worked around vials and mixing some less edible ingredients in the past and I figure that carries over. May not have the arms for rigging work, but I'm a quick learner, sir."

Is there a knowledge check(or auto gimme) on the holy symbol she uses? I'm guessing Besmara, but what my char knows is up to you.

I actually have the opposite view on bringing in a sixth person for the PbP. Too many people can bog down a game, certainly, but once we get a rhythm, particularly if we post contingencies in combat so we don't slow things down(I shoot the goblin if he's still standing, if someone else kills him first, then I heal the fighter). Having a healer in the party will be a big help and an additional person always adds more in party interaction and story which can keep everyone interesting during the slower moments.

And manners dictate the cooking goes to Elthas or Sabinae, hm? Between Gan hitting on me and you seeming to imply this is woman's work and so I should be included, I think I am offended!

As for the squinting Sabinae, I -may- be able to help with that once I get my spellbook back. Going to send the GM a note to check on a spell.

Fair enough, DM! Then I just really hope someone makes it up there in less then 10 rounds before I take myself out in the first activity!

Elthas stands at attention and listens to the captain and first mate's speech, paying attention to it even as he glances around and tries to take in what he can of the rest of the crew and the ship.

Knowledge:Geography1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

Elthas glances over at the rigging and sucks at his teeth, he's never been such a big fan of heights and rigging was his least favorite job on a ship, particularly when without his staff a drop is going to mean just that. Still, he gives a "Aye, bosun!" and sets off with the others to begin climbing.

Since it looks like we are having a 'race' I figured I would do rolls until I reached the top, so I can say 'it takes me 10 to get there' or whatever. If I fall, I'll let you know how many attempts it took before I do, since if someone beats that I'd stop climbing.

I -think- that a climb check covers a round(meaning you effectively move at half speed per climb check if you are double-moving, but that is just my interpretation. I am going on the assumption we need 8 checks as you said.

I am assuming that by the time we are up and the speeches are done we aren't sickened anymore, if we still are, all rolls are two lower.

Climb Checks:
Climb 1 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Fumble out of the gate, but no progress yet.

Climb 2 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

7.5 Feet

Climb 3 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

15 Feet

Climb 4 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

22.5 Feet

Climb 5 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

30 Feet

Climb 6 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

37.5 Feet

Climb 7 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

45 Feet

Climb 8 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

45 Feet

Climb 9 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

45 Feet

Climb 10 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Catch Myself 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Fall Damage from 45 feet 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2, 2) = 13

I would scramble at the rigging for 10 rounds, if no one had made it to the top by then I'll slip and fall from 45 feet putting myself unconscious at -6

If I was right about you being able to double move in a round with a climb check, I would have made it to the top after 5 rounds.

Elthas clasps Nico's forearm appreciatively and uses it to pull himself up to his feet fully before giving it a shake. He can't help but wince once fully upright, though he otherwise tries to hide his discomfort with a smile. He opens his mouth to speak when the group makes its way down the stairs and instead clamps it shut again, listening to the berating.

Perception1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Knowledge: Nature1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Intelligence1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Rolling his tongue in his mouth as if clearing the morning tastes he straightens up fully and offers a weak salute. "Aye, sir. We'll be reporting to the captain at once."

Trying not to look too surprised to see one of her sort here, he moves towards Sabinae to help her with the stairs, blinking a bit impressed by how well she maneuvers with her tail. Still he offers his assistance and whispers to her with a smile. "Don't worry, lass. Keep your head down and you'll get through this just fine."

Elthas gives Nicodemus a small nod of respect, recognizing from his simple description of where they are now that the man has spent his own share of time on the water.

Glancing back at Gan again with a shrug and starts to run through his inner monologue aloud, jumping from one thing to the next as he considers possibilities, trying to ignore his pounding head.

"Your guess is as good as ours, I imagine. I'm not worth too much, so unless one of you has a bundle back home and have been blatant about it I doubt we are ransom. If they grabbed this many of us, it must be a pretty good sized ship. I don't drink myself out of my wits, so I doubt they just gathered up those who wound up on the floor naturally. Press gang, maybe? Seems a bit too much of a risk to try and sneak up and sap this many people, even one at a time, and I don't remember even leaving the tavern, so probably poison. Could be sneaky that way, stash some in the food and drink and pick up whoever ingests enough to go down. Those who don't collapse leave none the wiser, thinking they just drank more than expected."

He motions again towards Nicodemus "Since privateers have national loyalty to work off of and less hostile environs can use pay as a motivator, I would wager our friend here is right and we've found ourselves on a pirates vessel. They aren't known for their pranks, so scooping up some stragglers and dumping them elsewhere is likely out. Hopefully you've got some skills they find useful since you don't want to be the example they use to make the others work if we aren't doing a good enough job."

Finally trailing off he sighs and mutters, more to himself than the others. "I just bloody swam from a boat like this and I bet we aren't in sight of harbor anymore."

Elthas looks up at Felix a bit awkwardly when the man nestles up against him, his brow furrowing. Finally, he sighs and shrugs helplessly before patting Gan's hair lightly, whispering in his deepest voice. "Hi, daddy."

Shaking his head and pushing at the man to sit up, he adds. "You might want to open your eyes a bit after drinking so much or you might find yourself the baby, huh? Or bedded to a manatee. If I was your first choice in the hold, then you aren't far off."

Edit: Also, Felix, it was easy to miss but in the discussion thread the DM asked us to edit our character class line in the profile to show our basic stats for quick reference.

A challenge? Don't worry, Gan, you are going to look like a superhero to me. Right now the only spell I -can- cast is detect magic, and because I don't have my arcane bond with me I have to roll a 15 on a concentration check for that!

Oh, but I'll pick up an oar and someone is getting hand of the apprenticed!

Elthas winces as the voice comes through the air, one hand raising to rub his eyes as he sits up, his other blindly grabbing in the air beside him where his staff would be leaning had he gone to bed on purpose.

When he realizes its absence he gives a quiet groan and drops to lay back on the floor again, both hands moving up to hold his head which aches from much more than just a hangover. "Unless the reverie traveled to a fish monger that set up shop on a rope bridge, it looks like we've been 'recruited'. Since I don't remember an interview and seem to be lacking... Well, everything, I'm betting we aren't fishing."

Finally sitting up and squinting against the light the thin man wears colorful loose-fitting pants of blue and red fabric, with a grey billowy shirt. He gives a small nod towards any of the others who seem to be coming to and adds. "Elthas."

Nah, unless they don't think to check for wrist sheaths I wouldn't have anything too purposefully hidden. I'm not that sneaky.

Also, just to make life easier, the gameplay thread is Linkified.

Poor Elthas is going to be crying without his gear, missing his spellbook, spell component pouch and bonded staff at once! Definitely an interesting challenge that will be fun to play out.

I have updated my profile to reflect your request, to add the spells in my spellbook since I realized the herolab output I chose didn't have that, as well as to empty out my gear and move what I had to a separate spoiler.

I did have a couple questions for you though actually if you don't mind, neither of which is terribly important. I was curious what you were thinking to do for combat? It seems most DMs have their own style and system, are you just looking to use photobucket, something like googledocs where you can share spreadsheets as battlemats, or an online tabletop we could all see like roll20?

For my other question, it is totally unimportant and mostly silly, but for when we do manage to get our equipment back, because scrolls are going to play a big role for my character do you have any problem with me keeping one in a wrist sheath? Since they aren't technically weapons I totally get if you rule against that.

Edit: And I just looked at my prepped spells. Naturally I have 3 1st level spells in my book which don't require components and none of them are the spells prepped.

Alright, it seems like an important plan is going to be to make sure none of us get hit too hard until we can get some potions or a wand for Sabina to bring us back up to health after a fight.

Seems we have a really good group though and I think this will be a lot of fun. I look forward to setting sail with you all!

Also, DM, I have heard from a few people that we start with no gear, should I sweep that out of my character sheet and just put it in a separate spoiler in the profile so you can see what I did have?
