About Elliot WorthaneBackstory:
Born an aasimar in the nation of Mendev, it might have been expected for him to live an easy life filled with social priviledges. Except, he was born as exactly the wrong kind of Aasimar, at exactly the wrong time, and with a weird birthmark no one seemed to know anything about. It started going wrong with the ever-present flames surrounding his otherwise thin, wispy hair – mimicking his equally lithe build. And as a he grew older, along came an uncanny tendancy to set progressively more important things on fire. Purely by accident, his foster parents always claimed, but there it was. By the time he’d reached teenhood, he’d torched too much - a dog, a cart, the straw roof of a stable and even the beard of High Inquisitor Halrun himself! Maybe if he could be taught to control it, such things wouldn’t happen. But no master dared associate with him. After all, rumors were abound that he was not an Aasimar, not even an emberkin, but a full—fledged demon of some kind – probably a spy planted by the enemy to weaken the fourth crusade’s effort. Not even emberkin aasimar had (sacriligeous!) hair that was literally on fire, but at the same time not warm! Surely the mark of the abyss - or witches! And with this war dragging, the wardstone of Kenabres remaining cracked, and the revenge retaliation campaign against the Storm King Kharroumzadeh failing to win more than large casualties for the crusaders, such rumors were easy to believe. It was always much easier to place the blame for failure on others – even children. Elliot could handle being disliked by the other children, and even the adults to some degree, as he had tricks for running away. Innate magical knowledge on how to make people slip, trip, even bleed if there was no other way, or just make himself invisible while they ran by. And no matter how bad the things were that happened to him, he’d always had a strange compulsion to forgive them. But the inquisition itself was another matter. Standing trial for ‘heresy’, ‘attempted murder of the high inquisitor’ and ‘consorting with the enemy’ was a harrowing experience for any ten-year old.To this day, he still thinks that only direct intervention by Beltran Ravenken at this trial saved him from the gallows. In a move that shocked many, this popular spokesperson of an allied mage-order directly proclaimed the hair was just a rare fluctuation, that the boy was now under his protection, and that by royal decree (somehow), Halrun would immediately drop his charges.
Of course, after that, life couldn’t return to normal. Elliot was taken to the order, which he then learned were the Rifwardens, where he would spend a good part of his teenage life hidden away, studying and learning to control magic. He was informed that his strange birthmark sometimes manifested in the children of Riftwardens that had been exposed to strange magic, not entirely unlike how the mongrelmen were demon-like children of the first crusaders exposed to abyssal energies, and that his own parents had most likely died on a secret mission when he was very young. However, not even Beltran knew anything more on the matter; he could only speculate that Queen Galfrey, or someone close to the royal court, had given the command. Years of study into advanced divination magic didn’t reveal anything else either. As the years went by, he got his magic under control and the memories of this event faded, his hair was glamoured to appear normal, and he reconnected with his foster family. Ties with the inquisition and part of the city watch never truly got ‘good’, and he always had the suspicion that he was being watched. But, fortunately for him, the combined usefulness of foster father as a smith, the implicit protection of the Riftwardens and his foster sister’s growing popularity as a performer were enough to dissudade further attacks. The rest of his teenage years were fairly happy, with his full graduation into the Order coming ever closer. He even joined his sister’s performing troupe recently, partly for fun, partly to improve his image, and partly to keep a closer eye on her as she was becoming a little too popular and ogled for his tasted.
Now if only the nightmares would stop – the ones where he killed and tortured everyone for daring to treat him they way he had been. Or worse, the rarer ones in which he he was a powerful demon inflicting the worst of cruelties on actual crusaders… in scenes that seemed entirely too real… Family and some other potential NPC's relating to Elliot:
Other NPC’s associated with Elliot Harran Worthane An Ulfen-blooded retired mercenary veteran from the fourth crusade, now a blacksmith. When asked, his story is that he stopped due to being mortally injured and not wanting to risk not seeing his daughter grow up. He’s allegedly taken Elliot in out of an honor debt towards his parents. While he could have technically earned enough gold to have his leg fully fixed, he decided not to, always coming up with an excuse where the money could be better spent. It’s partly due to his Ulfen faith and believing he should carry his scars with pride, partly because he is aging and that his role as a smith serves him well enough. And, of course, partly worrying that someone would find a way to send him off the the frontlines if he were fully combat-capable, so that he wouldn’t be there to defend his family against enemies from both within and without the city. There have been some religious conflicts at home in the past as he reveres Erastil and the Ulfen pantheon and is the only one of his family to do so. He secretly hopes that his own daughter will rethink her path as a performer and still bring more glory to his bloodline. But, failing that, his hopes are current on Elliot. Lene Worthane Foster mother. Originally a peddler and later shopkeeper. Originally met his foster father at a market, claiming he really sucked at selling his wares. It’s said Harran just raised his neckbeard and dared her to do better. She did, and still does. A fierce haggler and negotiator. Reveres Abadar. Lyra Worthane

(Ooc commentary: I tried designing these NPC’s in a way that makes it logical for them to play some part in forming the next crusade and/or joining them if they ever set out. I left Elliot’s primary magic teacher vague as I assume the Riftwardens play a significant part in the story, and that there’s probably a prominent member of them in the story who would serve best as his main teacher. But I could also add a new one if desired. Could also add more members of the theatre company but don’t want to make the list too long for just an application) Appearance and personality:
With wispy, literally-flaming hair and golden-coloured eyes as his main features, Elliot tends to stand out in a crowd. If glamour illusion magic is applied, he could however pass as a human. He otherwise appears as a youthful and lithe human man having just come into adulthood. Despite his alien features, or perhaps partly because of them?, he is well above-average in physical beauty. Among others, he has a perfectly symmetrical oval-shaped face complete with strong jaw and cute nose. He is overall an inquisitive and friendly person who tends to fanboy over the skills and achievements of those around him, rather than play up his own (I imagine him a bit like the way young Peter Parker is portrayed in the Marvel movies, if you are familiar with those). He does this partly out of genuine interest and amiable disposition towards other, but partly also because he learned complimenting others and appearing genuine at it is one of the easiest ways to get them to not hate you. If friendliness is not mutual, perhaps paranoid thoughts of whether this person is secretly out to harm him, his family or friends start resurfacing and might affect his behavior. Elliot worships Sarenrae, partly because he now understands his Peri-nature is naturally keyed towards forgiveness, and partly because she’s the only good-aligned diety of fire he knows. The final reason, one he wishes not to think too much about, is if his nightmares came to pass and he actually became evil somehow, that she is also a goddess of second chances and redemption. Party role and build going forward:
Elliot is currently set up to be a heavy control and support-based Arcanist, who will mostly take spells from the conjuration, divination and transmutation schools. I eventually decided to make him a School Savant Arcanist (giving him a wizard school in return for three arcanist exploits) with a divination specialization as I imagine he has tried repeatedly, perhaps obsessively, to find out more about what happened to his parents, and divination was the magical way to try. It also meshes well with the visions theme in that peri-blooded Aasimar often have nightmares of them doing horrible things, and the foresight divination powers give him brief glimpses into possible futures. Later on he will focus on counterspelling and dispelling next to his control spells, and he has some additional party-buffing available from his divination school starting at level 8. He’s also set to take things like mythic haste and mythic heroism to bring some great party buffs. His archmage powers will offer things like rolling twice on spell resistance and dispel rolls. I don’t have detailed plans for the mythic path yet, but it seems to offer great support for metamagic casting. I’d also like to make a legendary staff or robe on the side as an iconic item for him, as all mages have one. Depending on party makeup and if a Bard makes it in or not, I might make him a Variant Multiclass bard (mostly gives him extra knowledge skills and bard songs; he’d learn performing from the theatre group he’s with) and take the dual path ability that allowes taking abilities from both Archmage and Marshall. I really like teamwork abilities and buffing allies, and Bard and Marshall have that in spades. Never tried variant multiclass before but I think it’s definitely doable and worth it! Anything else?:
I’d really like to see what this campaign is like with the story as written and the mythic rules in full effect. I’ve played the beta of the upcoming video game adaption of this path, which goes to what I think is roughly half-way the story, but that’s an altered adaptation with altered paths and mythic rules. Also, I simply like the theme of going against a host of incredibly powerful demons using abilities that aren’t used anywhere else. Thus it was a bit of a bummer when the campaign I was in ended after only two pages of posts with our GM suddenly disappearing. If you like Elliot and my vote would count for anything in the unenviable task of cutting down the huge list of current applicants, I’d like to be paired with Merixia as she seems a great and friendly roleplayer who was also in that campaign. However, I understand that’s not something I have any say in and that you should pick whoever seems most interesting to you. Good luck selecting! Statblock:

At 10th level, she increases it by an additional 2 instead. This replaces the arcane exploit gained at 1st level. Hero Lab and the Hero Lab logo are Registered Trademarks of LWD Technology, Inc.
