Elanna wishes that she was an orphan. Most children love their parents, deeply so, but when your mother is an abusive drunk and your father a literal devil… you find yourself thinking that not having them might be better.
Getting ahead in Chelish society always involves devils – but you’re meant to outsmart them and get more than you bargained for. Not be outsmarted and find yourself pregnant with a child that can’t possibly be your husband’s. So Lady Thehm, rather than catapulting her family (and more importantly her own) status into the highest ranks of Chelish society, found herself ostracised and disgraced when she gave birth to a devil-spawn child.
Ignored and exiled from court, society and everything that made life worth living Lady Thehm turned to drink, then to flayleaf and ignored the ‘shame of her family’ as much as possible. The horns, the sixth finger on the left hand and the freckles that stood out on Elanna’s pale skin like splatters of fresh blood were bad enough, but the girl turned out to be… good.
Elanna escaped her mother and Cheliax entirely just before her sixteenth birthday and found sanctuary with the Church of Desna where she grew in faith, skill, power and goodness. Which was unfortunate because there’s nothing a devil loves more than corrupting goodness. Just when Elanna thought she’d escaped her past and found a new life for herself, her father appeared instead.
Rather than bringing gifts and apologies for all the missed birthdays her hellish sire brought plots which led Elanna and a group of friends into the Abomination Vaults and the wicked plans of Belcorra Haruvex. What his end goal was, Elanna never discovered as she emerged largely unscathed from the vaults - older, wiser and more powerful than ever before.
Which is a very good thing because when Elanna wakes up after a remarkably strange dream and finds a harrow card clutched in her hand, two thoughts rush through her mind.
The first is “what the heck?”
The second is “DAD!!!”
