SPECIAL ABILITIES
Child of Oppara (Ex) Edryd belongs to a minor noble family that still matters in Taldor, though as the story begins he's traveled from his northern home to pursue matters of court in Oppara, staying at a small manor his family keeps on Senate’s Hill. With Princess Eutropia’s efforts to provide for Taldor’s common citizens and overturn years of tradition, new lines are being quietly drawn in the sand, and he's found himself embroiled in these intrigues whether he intended to be or not. Luckily, his upbringing among the city’s well-to-do gives him an upper hand when it comes to knowledge of high society, and he also starts the game with a modest inheritance. He gains a +1 trait bonus on Appraise and Knowledge (nobility) checks, and Appraise is always a class skill for him. In addition, he starts play with a noble’s outfit, a signet ring, and a masterwork shield bearing his family crest.
Rich Parents (Ex) Edryd's family sustains considerable economic influence with the nobility through their wineries and trade caravans. And, even though he turned to a life of adventure, he enjoys an additional one-time benefit to his initial finances, increasing his starting wealth to 900 gp, spent on acquiring a masterwork sword and suit of armor befitting a knight in service to the crown.
BACKGROUND
Edryd Calmiras was born into a lesser noble house in the northern reaches of Taldor east of the Verduran Forest in the shadow of the Fog Peaks marking the border with Galt. His childhood focused intently on the study and history of his ancestors as well as the etiquette of court. Both his father and mother hoped this education would help him further elevate their house to even greater standing with the Grand Prince. Unfortunately, Edryd fancied the tales of Taldan heroes and the great expeditions across Avistan and Garund far more than matters of state, and so he spent most of his time developing his skill-at-arms and an overall spirit for adventure.
When he was 15, Edryd's family hosted a wine-tasting event attended by Grand Prince Stavian III at their estate, whereupon he made fast friends with the prince's daughter, Eutropia, just prior to her enrollment in finishing school and his own application to join the knight's Order of the Lion. They kept in contact by occasionally writing letters to one another for a short time, but eventually their interactions waned. However, as a result of their friendship and the optimistic aspirations of the princess, Edryd was inspired and finally began to take matters of court more seriously, as he saw the importance he could play in politics and the shaping of future generations in Taldor.
Those realizations eventually led him to leave home and travel more extensively across the nation, touring the border with his fellow knights, visiting the cultural capital of Taldor, and further honing his sense of adventure. Now at the age of 21, he's taken up residence in a small manor his family maintains in Oppara, just beginning to navigate the social circles of court in an effort to better prepare himself for the political intrigues that will surely follow the path he's set upon now. In fact, that path may yet put him at odds with his parents -- and even his knightly order -- all of whom have long supported Grand Prince Stavian's rule. And yet, the more time he spends in Oppara, he's matured enough to view his liege in a more negative light and feels himself hearkening more to the voices of a younger generation interested in reforming the nation and restoring its lost glory -- a sure gateway to the history, tradition, and adventure he's always loved about his homeland.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Edryd has blond hair, brown eyes, and a hale demeanor of physicality and athleticism. At 21 years old, he stands 5'11" and weighs 185 pounds with a fit, muscular physique and an attentive curiosity ever-present in his strong voice. He dresses most often in the colors of his order and his faith -- gold to represent the lions of Taldor and the burgundy-red of Iomedae -- all overlain with his ornate armor. In less martial situations, he dons a royal blue noble's outfit and a dark gray surcoat befitting his social station, but still with his same pragmatic black boots, polished with a soldier's precision. His sword, armor, and shield receive similarly meticulous care, as Edryd always strives to look his best. His armor was crafted by a dwarven smith commissioned in the Five Kings Mountains, but his blade and shield were forged at home -- both carrying symbols important to his house -- a blue wyvern rampant on a field of gold upon his shield, and the creature's stinger as the pommel of his sword.
PERSONALITY
Edryd has a genial personality and makes a point of befriending and helping people wherever he goes, especially if it involves putting bullies in their place and uplifting the downtrodden. Though too unrefined to follow in the pious footsteps of his older brother as a member of Iomedae's clergy, he generally adheres to the tenets of the Inheritor, believing in the rule of law, but always choosing the greater good over tyranny. He enjoys seeking out others of like mind and befriending them -- heroes ready to take action whenever it's needed most -- and he feels the time is ripe for action among Taldor's younger generation to improve the empire's standing in the world and reclaim its tarnished glory. Edryd also has a sense of romanticism about him, often infatuated with grandiose stories of love, great heroic deeds, and historic accomplishments that have benefited Taldor's citizens over the years. He hopes to achieve a similar story for himself someday.
