appearance:
Durriken Garde is of middling height, with unkempt shoulder-length dark hair. His clothing is typically loose fitting and drab, with an upturned or tightly closed collar. He is still obviously somewhat powerfully built, and can move deceptively quickly when he chooses. His hands bear several small scars, the product of years on the streets followed by time spent as an apprentice artisan. Though he tries to keep it hidden with his dress, a long, ragged scar is often visible across his throat. His demeanor ranges from gruff to outright hostile with the majority of people that he meets. Background:
"You were supposed to retrieve the letter from Chavali, and make her...loss seem like an accident." Gaedren Lamm looked coolly at Durriken. He'd feared coming to Lamm, thought about running, but really, where could he go? At 6, becoming a Little Lamm had saved him, and now, 8 years later, where else would he go? "It didn't go the way I thought," the boy replied. I am not a boy, this already happened, I will get him, just please make it stop... The boy absently rubbed the palm of his hands on his breeches, the blood already washed away, but the guilt, not of the kill but of the failure, causing his palms to itch. This wasn't his first kill. It also wasn't his cleanest. "She fought. She said she didn't know what I was talking about. Claimed the merchant never wrote to her. I never expected the whore to attack me!" Gaedren's gaze locked on Durriken's. "You're proving to be a poor thief, and an even worse assassin." It was true, in its way. Durriken had started running letters for Lamm at 6, the offer of a warm place to sleep in the winter more than enough to overcome what few reservations he may have had. He’d gradually moved up to moving merchandise and gold amongst Lamm’s many pawns and surrogates, helping keep his benefactor in the shadows. He’d moved up in Lamm’s organization when he’d removed another boy, two years his senior, from the picture when he found the boy was planning to let one of Lamm’s competitors in on some information. At least that’s what he’d heard, the boy had denied it, of course, until Durriken had dropped his body into the river. But Durriken had never been very quiet. His kills had all been fairly straightforward. Not brutal, but they lacked elegance as well. Lamm obviously disapproved. “You should have anticipated she might fight. Brought her to a place like this, away from the crowds, where a struggle wouldn’t be heard. Then you could have searched her apartment, rather than flee from it.” Gaedran began to pace, a slow arc to Durriken’s left, as he regarded his surrounding in the mostly empty warehouse. NO! Don’t let him behind you! The steel across his throat filled him with shock before the pain came, as it always did. Then the fear, as his inability to breathe sent panic through his body, though the muscles refused to respond to any signal. Durriken sank to the floor, one hand clutching his throat, the other stretched toward the only man whom he’d trusted to teach him, and to keep him safe. Lamm pulled out a small flask, unstoppered it, and set it on the floor, just out of Durriken’s reach. “It’s a healing potion boy. If you drink it in time, it might just save you.” Lamm spun on his heel, and strode towards the door, absently knocking the flask over with his foot, never looking back. The boy reached for the flask, darkness closing around his vision, as the precious fluid flowed onto the dirt floor, the image of Lamm’s figure leaving him behind, as he had so many others, burning into his mind… Durriken woke with a start, back on the simple pallet he kept on the floor of the old Ranger’s bow shop. His hand reflexively flew to the hideous scar across his throat. He’d reached that flask, but the remaining fluid had barely been enough to save him. The scar remained, but little of his voice did. It didn’t matter. Soon, it seemed he might have an opportunity to fulfill the promise he’d made to the back of his teacher, his father. “You will die before me,” he whispered, before falling back into a restless sleep.
Character Notes for GM:
Given his background as written, it made sense to cast Durriken as LE. I borrowed heavily from Palladium's "Aberrent" Alignment for his personal code. Durriken will: 1. Always keep his word.
I intend to start him out as a bad guy, but as Lamm's grip on him (in the form of Durriken focusing forward rather than backward) loosens, his anger will dissipate. This, coupled with examples set by the other party members, should push him towards Lawful Neutral, and possibly good, eventually. Skirmisher is partly a mechanical selection, and partly a flavor one. Since his wound causes him pain when speaking, casting spells would be difficult. attack roller:
