Duncan Stone was born to a farming family of no great importance. As soon as he was old enough, he enlisted with the City Guard of Waterdeep, and served until he was in his early thirties. At that time, he was the commander of his unit, and they were dispatched to eliminate what they were told was some small force of goblins that were harrassing a nearby town. He lead his force into the town to find that it was abandoned, it's residents killed or fled to the last. He realized the trap far too late, and they were soon flanked by goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears, a force that easily outnumbered his twenty men 2 to 1. His unit fought bravely, and with massive loss, was able to eliminate the goblinoid force. Only Duncan, his dwarven lieutenant named Arur Steelriver , and a new recruit survived. The recruit hid from the battle as Arur and Duncan stood back to back fending off the goblinoids. Once the fighting was over, Duncan kneeled to rest and ponder what he was going to tell the families of his slain men. A hobogoblin burst out from hiding, taking a shot at Duncan with it's crossbow. Arur dove in the way, taking the bolt to the heart, instantly killing him. Duncan quickly dispatched the last goblinoid, then marched back to Waterdeep in a daze.
