About Dirk Squarejaw
6'3", 215 lbs. Brown hair, green eyes, bronze skin. Colors: dark blue, steel gray, burnt/rusty orange.
Dirk was born into a well-to-do, well-educated, overachieving family of businessmen and women, lawyers, and other prestigious occupations. He, however, was born with far more brawn than brains. When his family and others realized that Dirk would never live up to their expectations and standards, they slowly began disowning him (some intentionally and overtly, others more unknowingly and/or subtly; this happened shortly before he reached adulthood). Painfully understanding that his continued presence would only add to his personal suffering, and perhaps also tarnish his family's name, Dirk packed a few meager belongings and left his home in Cassomir, Taldor on a ship bound for Absalom.
Once in Absalom, Dirk put his physical prowess to use and found work with the Stone Mountain Transport Company (a moving, hauling, and heavy transport contractor) as a porter. His supervisors took note of his physical abilities and began giving him additional responsibilities such as guard duty (which afforded him with arms and armor training). Eventually, the Malloven family traits activated, and Dirk decided to expand his employment opportunities (and income streams) by joining the Pathfinder Society and working for the Grand Lodge.
Other notes:
1.) Dirk learned to play the harmonica at an early age and enjoys playing music as a way to cope with and heal from his painful family history.
2.) Dirk has a surprisingly good singing voice and sings many songs ranging from drinking songs to ballads of lost loves. He even writes his own lyrics, most of which are about his family history ...
3.) ... and his lost love, Kaleanna Bardissius, who inexplicably ceased all contact with him around the same time his family's disownment reached its peak (he strongly suspects this was the primary factor in Kaleanna's withdrawal).
4.) "Squarejaw" is a derogatory nickname that Dirk's sibling's gave him during childhood, based on his very square jawline. After leaving Cassomir, he adopted it as his new surname.
5.) Dirk has a kind heart despite his rough and tough ways. He has a special concern for those who are rejected in some way, especially by those who should be their family, friends, or allies.
