Background:
Janie Carr moved to Seattle with her parents from Tir Tairngire. Her father worked for Telestrian Industries in Cara'Sir (Portland) as a scientist working on cutting-edge bio and cyber systems. Her mother was a sergeant with the Tir Defense Force. Part of the elite Black Banner (Bratach Falan), she was to be part of the security team at the Telestrian compound in Seattle.
The first few years went by, and Janie finished her private schooling and decided, against both her parents wishes, to enter the Lone Star Police Academy. For two years, Janie trained and after her initial placement in the Patrol Division, she applied and was accepted for training in the Fast Response Teams. She served on FRT-7 (Puyallup Barrens) until the removal of Lone Star contract from Seattle.
Having been part of the hunt for the Mayan Cutter, as well as numerous raids on Tempo labs and drug houses, Janie saw the hard work and dedication of her fellow officers, and it was like a stab in the back that their contract was pulled from the metroplex. Suddenly, after several years of working for Lone Star, she found herself unemployed. It seemed the new Director of Lone Star blamed the entire Seattle force for its ‘failure’ and fired the lot of them. Some, like those in the Paranormal Investigations Unit formed their own company and started to see their services to the highest bidder. While she could not argue with them looking after their own ‘assets’ it did not sit well with her now broken loyalty to Lone Star. With nothing else to do, Janie found herself back at her parents’ home in the Telestrian Compound.
A few months went by and it became obvious that no one was looking to hire an ex-Lone Star cop and she was seriously thinking of asking her mother if she could find her a job with Telestrian Security when she received a call from her old Team leader. He was getting the group back together for, what he called, a job from a ‘reputable’ source. Not sure what that meant, she agreed to meet him at a local bar the Team use to frequent. When she arrived, she noted all but one of the team was there. The one missing was their mage, Alex, who had taken a job with Ex-Astra Astral Security Services, the company created by Frasier Simington, the old Paranormal Investigations Director at the Seattle Lone Star offices. As a replacement they had found some scruffy down on his luck shadowrunner who went by the moniker Flump. The mission, it seemed, was pretty simple. They needed to extract an asset from a minor Corp and bring him safe and sound to the Mr. Johnson…and it was that simple. The mission went off without a hitch. Once they were done, the chief handed her a hefty credstick. This one run had netter her the equivalent of a year’s salary with Lone Star. For the next year, she worked with her old team mates several times, and each time the payoff was large. It seemed that she might have found a new job doing pretty much what she was doing with Lone Star, but in the shadows the decks are stacked and sooner or later the house always wins.
The run was much like the others the group had been doing, a removal of a willing asset and dropping them to their new employer, however this time the asset was a little girl, and she was most definitely not willing. It all went to pieces when the chief realized what this run was, a kidnapping, and refused to do it. That is when Flump showed his true colours and shot the chief. Seems he had made a separate deal with the Johnson to make sure there were no loose ends. In the scuffle the little girl was killed…along with most of the team. Only Janie, their decker Lauren and Flump made it out. In the news her group were vilified as criminals and Knight Errant releases a blurry trid of the botched extraction. It shows her and Lauren running from the scene, while a few moments later Flump, who they thought they had killed, gets up and stumbles out of frame. While she has a helmet and facemask on, the existence of the trid shocks her into action. Not only the guilt of the child’s death, but the loss of her team and the shame she could bring upon her parents pushes her to leave her life behind and disappear into the shadows. A need to correct the wrong she had allowed to happen and a drive to continue to ‘do right’ for the people of Seattle might narrow down the jobs she might get, but at least she knows she is not furthering some Corp’s agenda or a corrupt politician’s plans.
Going by the name Descending Sunset, a name from a story about a young Chinese woman who fought the corruption in her city, and living out of a brothel in the Puyallup Barrens, Janie carefully continues her war against corruption and greed.
