SAMPLE ROUND

Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Round #1

Davy grins and shakes his head as the cards up his sleeve slide accidentally onto the table. Infuriated, the large man across his seat smashes his bottle's bottom against the edge of the table, but before he can even point the broken shards at Davy, the young swordsman is already on his feet.

Despite Davy's prompt reaction, the many beers chugged in the previous hour seem to take their toll: Davy's blade flies wide off its target. Cursing under his breath, he stares at the angry man before him and still tries to turn the situation around; if his rapier could not hit the mark, perhaps his words can. "That's a warning. The next one goes through your throat. Sure you wanna play?" The slurred threat does not sound particularly convincing. Maybe it is just going to be one of those nights, he thinks.

Move action: stand up and draw the rapier. Standard action: melee attack using Power Attack.

Bonuses/Penalties: +3 Dex, +1 BAB, +1 morale, +1 Weapon Focus (rapier), -1 Power Attack

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Intimidate: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Active Conditions:

Inspire courage +1

Background is complete in the alias. It's running a bit long, but alas, tragedies often do!

Coming up: sample combat turn!

Applying with Davy Dagaroth, a charming swashbuckler who pretends to be your friend! A bon-vivant who doesn't mind siding with House Thrune to get what he wants.

The backstory is more ellaborate than that, I'll include it in the profile once I have the time to write it down.

Just finished the sheet, now I'm good to go.

Oh, hadn't seen that. This one is a make over of a character I was playing in a rather short-lived Serpent Skull campaign a while ago, and I wanted to explore the concept further in gameplay. Actually, it will work better in Giantslayer than in Serpent Skull, thematically.

Applying with this character: Davy Dagaroth, "human" cavalier!

[EDIT]Posting habits: I check the boards pretty much every day. I'm currently playing in a Numenera games that's trying to pick up some momentum, and a great Curse of the Crimson Throne PbP that's been going really well for over a year, we're just starting the second module of the AP (I'm playing Lyla).

I'll throw in my two cents...

I'd rather have Haladir as a GM for this one, and here's why: I've played with him in another short-lived (Carrion Crown) game and his character and his posts were great. Though said game tanked, he was one of the players that tried to keep it going for as long as it could, so from that experience I feel like he is a reliable and commited player (which I guess will translate to his GMing). He looks like a dedicated storyteller with a narrative style that I find appealing and, finally, he writes speech between quotes, which I personally think is comforting. ;)

So although we'd be losing a fine character by letting Viorec go, I feel like we'd be trading it for a good shot at a long and fun PbP.

I wouldn't be opposed to us getting another GM, but if Haladir is really willing to take the helm here, I say Aye, Aye, captain. I'd be willing to chip in on the *.pdf if necessary, and we can buy the other modules as we go, if things go well.

P.S.- I'll be traveling throughout October and my posting rate will be very, very low during that time, but other than that I'd be totally in.

Should we try to recruit a new GM? I like the group we got here.

Did we lose our GM?

Knowledge (local) to identify the tattoo: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Knowledge (religion) to identify the tattoo: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

The girl's tattoo draws Davy's attention, but Gelik's screaming distracts him from the symbol, and he dismisses the thought of the tattoo as he helps Desiona get Gelik to his feet. He smiles to himself, satisified with his performance and glad that all the slapping worked, after all.

Seeing that Desiona seems to have everything in control concerning Gelik and the shackled man, Davy walks up to the red-haired, tattooed girl, drawn by her exotic beauty and feisty behavior. He offers her a charming smile and runs his hand through his wet hair to get it out of his face. "Don't worry, we've got it. The guys are already setting up camp", he says cocking his chin towards St. John, who is standing at the edge of the jungle. He then widen his eyes and stiffens his body, as if remembering something. "Ouch. Gotta tell him about the cannibals, we'd better not go too deep into the jungle." He starts walking towards the Taldan noble, but then turns on his heels and walks back to the red-haired woman. "I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. Davy Dagaroth, at your service", he declares bowing slightly. "And you'd be...?"

"It's an island in the bay of Eleder", Davy replies turning to Iomestria. He places one hand on his hip and the other over his eyes, looking to the horizon. "We're just off the Sargavan coast... good news is that it's on the maps, so sooner or later some ship will pass by. Bad news is, it'll probably be pirates", he says making a grimace. Davy then turns around and goes after Desiona to check on the unconscious survivors, inciting Iomestria to follow him. "Let's go, kiddo, let'come help the others and later we can chat about the shipwreck..."

He kneels by Gelik's side and watches Desiona perform first aid. He tries to copy her movements, but his healing efforts pretty much come down to repeatedly slapping the gnome's face while saying "C'mon, wake up! Wake up!"

Heal to aid another (DC 10): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7

Davy looks around and analyzes the landscape under different criteria hoping to pinpoint their location. He tries to remember their last known position and, taking the landscape into account, proclaims with certain confidence "Pinch me if this ain't Smuggler's Shiv."

Davy finally finds his dagger and unsheathes the weapon, with the blade pointing down. Dancing in front of the scorpion-like sea bug, he studies the creature while dodging, waiting for an opening to strike. He aims for the brain and brings the dagger down on the creature's head. "Let's see how you like it!"

Rolls:

Move action - draw weapon.

Davy wakes up to a stinging sensation on his jaw. He instinctively slaps the insect off his face and rolls on the sand to get away from the creature, swearing "Holy c***!" He then jumps to his feet and runs his hands around his waist, trying to find the dagger he usually carries around.

Rolls:

Move action 1 - Acrobatics check to move 5 ft. away from the scorpion while prone without provoking AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 (DC = Scorpion's CMD + 5)
Move action 2 - Stand up (no AoO)

Seeing that Iomestria seems to have taken his remark a bit too seriously, Davy leans over, around the gnome by his side, and speaks on the girl's ear. "It's a joke, kiddo, just roll with it. You don't have to question everything, you know..."

He then sits back and rolls his eyes as the discussion about gods and religion goes on. His own curiosity lies in another subject, however, and he touches captain Kovack's arm to grab his attention and start a parallel conversation. "So, captain, tell me more about Sargava and its mysteries. I would love to join an expedition to the jungle as soon as we get there... I've read that it still houses countless ruins of ancient and lost civilizations, is it true?"

Human Swashbuckler | HP 12 of 12 | F+1 R+5 W-1 | AC 18.13.15 | Init. +7 | Perc +3

Davy opens up some space and invites the gnome to sit by his side, between him and Iomestria. "Here, you poor sufferer! If you can't enjoy the feast, at least enjoy the best company you could have!" He pauses for a moment, waiting for the others to give him a nasty look for his conceitedness, and then follows up with a joke to break the tension. "Why, I mean Iomestria, of course!", he offers with a laugh.

Davy then grabs some potatoes and flickers his fingers over it, a violet glow pouring out of his hand. "Aberwhinge, if it's the taste and smell of food that's turning your stomach, try this. No taste, no smell. To be fair, I usually use this trick to improve my meals, but maybe it suits you..."

Spellcraft DC 15:
Prestidigitation to remove the taste of the food.

Davy chuckles listening to the religious debate that has taken hold of the conversation. When Desiona decrees the end of the discussion, he nods in agreement and raises both hands to appease everyone. "Let's leave that for another time, to each his faith, right? The only god we know for sure is with us right now is the Lucky Drunk, for he has already blessed Desiona here", Davy says jokingly, alluding to the half-elf's tipsyness. He then turns his attention once more to Ieana, inquiring about her books yet again.

Human Swashbuckler | HP 12 of 12 | F+1 R+5 W-1 | AC 18.13.15 | Init. +7 | Perc +3

Davy drinks to Captain Kovack's toast and then once more to Viorec's. "Gotta say I like where this is going—the dinner, I mean, since under Desna's watch we don't really need to worry about the ship."

He puts his goblet down and leans forward approaching Desiona. "I'm sure my after hours mates know many songs you haven't heard yet, Desiona. Join us later and we'll learn some new tunes while your quick-fingered gypsy pal strips them off their silver like he did to me", he says winking at the two Varisians.

Davy then overhears Iomestria speaking about his homeland Cheliax. The girl shoots out questions faster than anyone can dare to answer, so Davy just chooses one of the subjects to offer her a piece of conversation. "Well, red, I'm from Cheliax myself, and I know what you mean about slaves being treated horribly. Those poor halflings—if you ain't human around those parts, you're in for a rough ride. Even so, I got some halfling buddies back at the Academy and let me tell you something: those little fellas know how to have a good time. Loads of fun, they are." He then invites Ieana to join the conversation, repeating Iomestria's initial question. "But please, Ieana, tell us what other books you have in your cabin. I'm nearly finished with the one you got me last week, I'll pick up something else tomorrow." His face lights up as he mentions the books.

After being pulled out of the box by a couple of confused sailors, Davy was quick to befriend the captain, explaining the whole situation that got him there in the first place and drawing laughs from the captain and his crew. Of course, the fact that he carried a full purse—which is now empty—was of help, as he promptly offered to pay for a ticket to Sargava as soon as he learned where the ship was bound to. Having paid the fare, Davy found himself free of duties, and spent most time aboard getting to know the other travelers and the sailors.

Upon learning that a certain woman had brought along plenty of books, Davy immediately went after Ieana to borrow some of them for the trip, a request which she reluctantly gave in to. Thus, Davy spent the free time during the day reading in his room or making small talk around the ship; at night, after the occasional dinner with the captain, he developed the habit of gathering a few of the sailors and travelers to drink and play cards on the deck, a practice that first illicited the ire of the captain and required a good deal of sweet-talking to get everyone out of trouble. In the end, the captain agreed to let the crew have their fun at night, as long as it didn't interfere with their dayjobs. Davy has repeatedly invited the other travelers to take part in his reunions, having lost more than a few gold pieces to that sneaky Varisian guy–"How come you always have the best hand? Pfff!" and insisting that the Mwangi priest with the difficult name tries at least one game to see how he likes it. The only one he seems to keep out of the drinking is the peppy teenage girl who is always asking questions about everything –"Sorry kiddo, you're too young for that!"

All in all, Davy has had a good time on board the Jenevere, and is terribly excited to be finally approaching Sargava.

-----------------------

"G'night!", Davy greets everyone as he enters the room. He stops before the captain and makes a slight measure. "Thanks for having me over once more, captain. I see we have potatoes... again!" He grabs a goblet and pours himself some wine, sitting down comfortably and raising a toast. "To our last days at sea – well, at least for a while, right, captain? So, tell me again, are you sure you never heard of the famous explorer Ricket Dagaroth? I figured his deeds should be known all over Sargava, from what I read of his journals. A true adventurer, I'd say!"

After killing the frog that attacked him, Dagaroth takes a moment to analyze the battlefield before deciding where to move next.

I'm delaying. I wanna see which frogs are still alive before deciding who to attack.

Human Swashbuckler | HP 12 of 12 | F+1 R+5 W-1 | AC 18.13.15 | Init. +7 | Perc +3

I just noticed that I didn't use Power Attack on my strikes, but applied the damage anyway.

So Mike should remove 4 damage from each of Dagaroth's trike this round (if the first was a critical, remove an additional 4).

Next round I'll destroy it!

EDIT: Additionally, if it was a critical, the frog is shaken for: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 rounds (from the Dragon Ferocity feat).

Dagaroth sees the bullfrogs advancing to attack and reacts accordingly. He darts around Tex and towards one of the beasts, cutting through the tall grass with ease, his movements resembling that of a wingless dragon. In the blink of an eye, he is face to face with the enormous frog, his clenched fist crossing the air in the creature's direction.

Hearing Aurelian's comment about cheese, he peaks over the Galtan's shoulder and reads the recipe. "It's goat cheese. That's how you are supposed to eat it." His hoarse voice sounds almost mechanical.

He looks around the room and spots the door to Leaara's bedroom. While Tex asks Crenn for permission to enter, Dagaroth wanders into the chamber unceremoniously and starts searching the place.

Dagaroth speaks for the first time since arriving. "Why do you assume all things out of this world mean harm? I've had visions of the stars, and they warned me of impending danger. Someone out there is on our side." He looks up and scratches the scales on his face.

Human Swashbuckler | HP 12 of 12 | F+1 R+5 W-1 | AC 18.13.15 | Init. +7 | Perc +3

The Mineshaft's front door swings open revealing a strange man well into his thirties. Though apparently human, the left side of his face is completely covered in dragon scales, and his reptilian eyes add to the bizarre countenance. He stroll inside looking at Dalviss' cress guests, and his walk exudes some sort of palpable pride, despite his simple peasant clothes covered by a beat-up armored kilt. Spotting Dalviss in the back of the tavern, he raises his hand to greet the innkepper, and walks up to the crowded table.

When he sits down in front of the Oread twins, the air fills with the stench of goats. Not wanting to interrupt the affected Galtan that currently holds the twins' attention, he looks away and signals for Nalan to approach. He then leans over and speaks in her ear. "Milk and meat, please. Not too cooked."

After the housekeeper walks away, the man joins his hands and rests them on the table, listening to the conversation but staring in a different direction.
