Darien Galveston was taken in as an orphan by the church of Sarenrae as an infant. As he grew, so too did his faith and dedication to the goddess and her church. When other children were out playing in the yard, Darien was sweeping out the chapel or working in the garden. Even when the priests would encourage him to take his ease for a day, he would solemnly reply that the church provides for his needs, it was his duty to give what service he could.
As he came into adulthood, it surprised none when he was called to serve as a Paladin in Sarenrae's name. As a citizen of Lastwall, it was only natural that his attentions would turn towards Ustalav, the nation of the ancient enemy of his country, the imprisoned Whispering Tyrant and all that has been left after his monstrous reign.
However, Sarenrae teaches patience and temperance, and that the greatest good is in the redemption of evil doers, not their destruction. Although to be sure, if the person does not seek redemption, destruction is sure to follow.
As such, in keeping with the teachings of Sarenrae, before Darien went forth to fight evil in Ustalav, he sought information about Ustalav and the evils dwelling there. He attended the lecture of none other than the esteemed Professor Petros Lorrimor, and afterwards spoke at length to him about the nature of evil. Impressed with Darien's methodology, Professor Lorrimor invited him to keep in contact with him.
Over the next decade, Darien would correspond regularly with the professor on topics ranging from the mundane topics of weather, politics, and life, to the more esoteric discussions of morality, redemption, and justice. At times Darien would accompany the professor on one trip or another.
Darien has made many trips into Ustalav to face the horrors there. It has been his experience that evil seldom wishes to seek redemption, but he still has hope, and unwavering faith in Sarenrae's methods. The countryside of Ustalav has had a fair few unrepentent evils purged by his hands in the meanwhile.
Darien was sadden to hear of his friend's death, and views it as his duty to attend his last wishes with honor.
