Looking at the falling object rules, it looks like a shobhad landing on your head would deal 2d6 base damage, or 1d6 if it fell less than thirty feet, and would require an attack roll against KAC. I'd probably allow the shobhad's strength modifier to be added in this case, and maybe allow unarmed strike damage in its place if it's higher than 2d6. I don't think the character would take any falling damage in this case, since the Athletic skill clearly states you don't fall unless you fail the check. :P For GMs who are worried about this getting out of hand, I would recommend applying 2d6 nonlethal damage to the shobhad (if over 30 feet), for deliberately jumping and for landing on a yielding surface (per the falling rules).

Daren, noting the diligence of Liu Quon, stays low in the bushes trying to stay out of sight of any possible villagers or ambushers for the time being. There he awaits a signal from the others before taking any action. Takes 10 on Stealth for 21 total, plus whatever modifiers are appropriate for distance.

If you're not ready, take your time and crunch those numbers (especially if it will make the encounters more fun). Nobody gets into PvP with the expectations that things will go quickly. Just be sure to pipe in every once in a while to let us know the game hasn't evaporated. Though we don't expect speed, we do hope for regular stability. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Looking at the numbers, I'm thinking four watch towers with Orochi to reduce the time to 4 days should be a priority. We can have all the cardinal directions covered in very little time, and can use them to keep an eye out for nearby scouts/spies who may report the villages' doings to their masters.

Daren speaks next: "And I have brought with me the knowledge and wisdom of over a dozen generations of martial artists of my homeland. I see few weapons among the people here. I shall instruct them in the ways of unarmed combat so that they might better catch Sho's thugs unawares. Though Master Hisui has not brought nearly enough weapons, those he has brought should be enough to begin training the villagers in their use--training which will prove valuable once I've helped to train the people in ambushing and disarming Sho's men. If we are wise in our actions, we shall not be lacking in weapons for long."

Picking himself off the ground and following his compatriots to the village elder's home, Daren seems distinctly unnerved, as though realizing his worn clothes, long beard, and tired eyes make him look just as old and as haggard as many of the villagers.

"We have heard of your bandit trouble and have come bringing food and aid!" Diplomacy check to improve attitudes and lure people out into the open: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (6) - 2 = 4 (aid another if need be) EDIT: Probably tripped over a stone, making the words come out more "We .... *oof* ... your bandit trouble ..."

Hisui no Hane wrote: "Albeit it not much, the supplies in my cart might show we come with good intentions, rather than to come and rob them of what little they have." Hisui said when they spoke of how to gain the villager's trust. Upon hearing Hisui's words, Daren is quick to caution his companions against reckless altruism: "It is entirely possible that once you show yourself to be non-threatening, and should they be truly desperate enough, they may well be the ones attempting to rob you. Trust will have to swing both ways."

A half drunk Daren, not readily keeping up with the various faiths, merely mimes the actions of those before him, leaving a half bottle of saki that was never his own to begin with at the shrine for whosoever might seek its comforts. During Masmune's story, he merely sits quietly, grimly, keenly focused on every word despite his current state of mind.

Liu Quon wrote: "Many thanks for the offer. I am Liu Quon, recently of the Golden Dragon Company. I am very curious about this notice Masamune posted, and the village he mentions." While walking back to the wagon: "As are we, Liu. I am known as Daren Mott, but please refer to me as either Daren, or Mr. Mott, if you prefer to be formal. I am but a humble journeyman, looking to find his place in the world." Liu Quon wrote: As they walk back toward the cart and the others Liu decides to push Daren's bluff further. "I'm even more curious about you and your companions. If you are truly not traveling with Masamune, why is it that yours are the only tracks that lead from his hut to here?" Daren looks at Liu quizzically, before responding in increasing tones of humorous sarcasm, "For someone who wishes to follow the man, you sure don't know seem to know much about him. It is said that Masamune flies about on a great fire-breathing dragon, a beast of fell temperament that he subdued and tamed with his own bare hands. The only thing sharper than the monster's great fangs, are Masamune's wit and sword. The only thing stronger than the slap of that leviathan's tail, is Masamune's strength of will. The only thing more unbreakable than the beast's scales, his honor. Any one of these things he has used to bring low great armies of men. Why would such a great man with a dragon have any need of traveling the road? It is our hope that we will arrive at the village and join up with the band by following the monsters' 'leavings.' Heh." Daren pats Liu heartily on the back as he breaks out into loud guffaws. Daren is making it up as he goes, and does not believe any such thing himself. In a much more serious tone, Daren continues, "But those are all stories and legends, none of which can be counted on to be true. After all, if he was truly even a tenth of all that, why would he need a band of men to save one small village from bandits?" He then leans into Liu's ear and quiets to a whisper, "But this I do know to be absolutely true..." Suddenly spinning towards and kicking the back of the wagon, he bellows as loudly as can muster at the snoring old man hidden in the back:

Daren deflects the arrow away from what would have been a sure shot to the heart.
Deflect arrows. You would have hit his AC otherwise, which is enough to impress him. "Aha, so you aren't just some farmboy looking for glory. There's some real talent to be had. As promised, I shall tell you where Masamune's band is headed. That way." Daren points ahead of the caravan, in the direction they are already headed. "Now we all know something of the potential danger he poses and can be ready for him if need be." Daren walks up to the bowman, and kindly returns his arrow. "We appear to be of similar direction," says Daren, patting the bowman heartily on the shoulder. [b]"Why don't you join us? We are about to eat. You're welcome to share in some of our provisions while we try and catch up to Masamune's band ahead of us." Daren is stalling until he knows the truth behind the new traveler's words.

As sharp as any arrow, a snide reply shoots back, "There is no man here by that name, though I know where he 'claims' to be." The voice of the unseen responder hints of cynical derision. "And who just might you be to think himself worthy of being man to the legendary Masamune?" Bluff check: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14 Daren Mott walks around the corner of the wagon, revealing himself to Masamune's would-be follower. "Assassin? Or true believer in our cause?" "To presume such an honor you must think yourself a grand bowman. Come then! Show me your skill. If you can graze me with but one arrow then I shall tell you what direction his band went. You might yet catch them."

Maybe substitute "brute" for "savage" then? Does Tahei look remotely thuggish? "You may call me 'Daren,' Or 'Master Mott,' if you wish to be formal...and I'm not that old." Despite his earlier comments, Daren bows in respectful greeting as well. Daren is not quite yet middle aged, he just looks older due to his hard life on the run as a wanted ronin, and also because of his long unkempt hair and longer beard.

Pulling up close behind Masamune and Orochi is a man in blue robes with white trim. His gaunt face, thick beard, and large nose grant emphasize the depth of his eyes, granting his countenance a hard look that suggests he has seen his fair share of trouble. If not for his tall, lanky frame, one might have mistaken him for a dwarf. To the trained eyes of a warrior, the stance in which he carries himself and the scarring on his knuckles suggests he is a trained brawler accustomed to close-quarters combat. His robes and staff, on the other hand, suggest that he might be a pilgrim or a mage. Whether he is a soldier, priest, or wizard, only one thing is known for certain, the condition of his clothes and torn footwear mark him as a man who has seen a great deal of travel on foot. Daren wastes no time with introductions. "So this is Masamune's army," he says loudly with a scowl, "two birds and a savage?" Leaning towards Masamune, he whispers "We best pray the bandits don't bring a stone, lest we lose 2/3 of this 'mighty' force standing before us."

Response: "Determining your identity is merely a personal curiosity. It is not related to my coming to help a poor village overcome its bandit problem. That, I have come to do regardless of the outcome of our meeting here today. People in need should be helped. Desire does not enter into it, just as I have no desire to punish fraudulent men. It is a matter of honor, not desire." "You still have not sated my curiosity. How do I know you are who you say you are?"

Interaction: Mott stands silently for a few moments longer, still wary that it may be a ruse. However, once it becomes evident that no further attack is forthcoming, he sits down and crosses his legs in front of Masamune--being sure to keep one eye on Orochi all the while.
Still tense. Still in crane stance. "In answer to your question...most gracious host." Mott hands Masmune the torn flyer.

Response:
Daren reals from the blow, but quickly regains his footing, spinning on his attacker (taking care not to forget the man behind him).
"Treachery!" Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 Once he is able to act, Daren responds in kind, using a swift action to activate his crane stance, then he attacks defensively while casting shield upon himself. Concentration check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Do you use old Crane Wing or new Crane Wing in your games? Either is fine with me. How long do you want us to use spoilers

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1
Wow. What rotten luck! Reaction: Leaning on his staff, Daren pulls the notice out of an inner pocket, flashing it towards the samurai's direction.
"I have come a long ways to see with my own eyes if this note was truly left by the famed Masamune Kokoyomo--and to punish those who would diminish a great man's name should they be fraudulent. You bear his likeness to be sure, but for your sake, I hope that you are he." Oblivious to the shadow or the few signs signaling the tense expectation in Masamune's face, Daren crosses the threshold bearing not an inkling, but a staff and a piece of parchment instead. |
