Dan is a quarter Shoanti, on his mother's side. His still-living grandparents were Skoan-quah traders who settled in Korvosa when they got the opportunity to purchase the shop of one of their regular customers. They settled in the small community of expat Shoanti and did their best to ignore the scorn of the tribe as they became a conduit for other Shoanti traders and Korvosan merchants.
Dan's mother, Tanjah, grew up in the city and eventually fell in love with a young brewer, Pavolius. The two married and had several children, with Dan, the oldest, named after one of Tanny's Shoanti ancestors. His younger siblings are Zova, a sister only two years younger than Dan, Marcello, a brother six years Dan's junior, and Novennia, the baby sister eight years younger than Dan.
The children grew up in a series of taverns and breweries, at first as their father worked for other people and then as he started his own brewery and tavern. Alcohol was never the seductive mystery to them it is to some children, as they grew up tasting wine and beer in the normal course of their days.
It was a happy childhood, though Dan inherited the wanderlust that had driven his grandparents to become itinerant traders until their middle age. He wandered all over the city, getting into trouble with and without his friends, as children tend to do.
Unfortunately, even happy children sometimes rebel and Dan's rebellion came in the form of shiver. With alcohol a known quantity, Dan experimented with the hallucinogen as a teen, frequenting the shiver dens and getting addicted to both the languid torpor of the drug and the vivid dreams that came after.
It was in one of these dreams that he met Cayden Cailean. Cayden revealed to him in a vision more vivid than the shiver dream that the drug was a form of mental imprisonment, that he was trading real life for a world of ephemeral dreams. Dan woke up from that dream with the conviction that shiver dealers were nothing but slavers in another form. They didn't enslave peoples' bodies, they instead enslaved their minds.
Finding fellow adherents of the Accidental God wasn't hard, and he quickly convinced them he was sincere in his beliefs. Dan has since devoted himself to Cayden's service and saving shiver addicts from themselves. In particular, Dan has worked against Gaedren Lamm's shiver dealers and dens.
Unfortunately he had one too many run-ins with the city watch in his efforts to help the common man back in Korvosa and he had to go on the lam. He just recently arrived in Sandpoint and heard that there was a group of adventurers fighting goblins who have been raiding the town- something right up his alley.
Personality:
Dan is definitely a tavern keeper's son and a merchant's grandson. He's friendly and easy to talk to, always with a relevant anecdote or snippet of information. While he looks intimidating, in fact his Shoanti size has taught him to know his own strength and how to be gentle and thoughtful rather than rash like many young men his age.
His brush with shiver addiction has made him a zealous campaigner against the drug, while both his upbringing and his worship of Cayden Cailean have made him a frequent, and friendly, drinker.
Appearance:
Dan looks like a typical Shoanti. He's big, well over six feet tall, with shoulders an axe handle wide and a chest like a blacksmith's. He has reddish-brown skin and short cropped black hair, with chocolate brown eyes over high, broad cheekbones.
But he was born and raised in the city, and he's not rich, so he tends to dress like a lower class Korvosan. Not being rich and not being a soldier or mercenary has limited his options for weaponry and armor, as well. His armor is old but serviceable Sable Guard issue, given to him by a retired Guardsman who's one of the regulars at his parents' bar. His shield is solid, polished oak that he saved from the scrap heap after a bar renovation- he got a carpenter friend to shape it into a circle and an apprentice blacksmith he knows to put a handle on the inside and a steel ring around the rim. His primary weapon is an oversized tap handle with a spiky bronze sun for a knob- the novelty handle given as an incentive for serving a Qadiran beer that unfortunately wasn't as good as its promotional items.
