Born the second of two sons into a fishing family in the town of Dale, Dag had always looked to the west and the dark, mysterious forest of the Golden Woods. From a young age the boy was fascinated by the stories of the elves and how Bard I killed the great dragon Smaug. The battle of the 5 armies and the great and powerful elven lords also interested the young lad. By age 5 he had created his own toy bow and would declare himself an 'elf warrior' in the many children's games they would play.
While most of the children grew out of their childhood dreams and followed their parents into a craft, Dag remained true to his first love. He practiced daily with the bow, and later with other weapons, as he joined the local militia.
When he was only 15, tragedy struck the family as the fishing vessel his parents worked on was lost to the capricious waters of Long Lake. Having lost everything, Dag followed his brother as a guard for hire. With no attachments left to keep him in Dale, he talked his brother into accompanying him south to the great city of Minas Tirith. He hoped to come across some elves and, in his still child-like imagination, join them and learn the ways of the elder folk. Alas, the two of them travelled all the way to Gondor, and did not spot one elf during their months of travel. Feeling glum and that he would never meet an elf, Dag agreed to help escort some diplomats south with his brother.
