About DM grufflehead

At each opportunity, you may choose one of the following advances as if you had gained a level in the appropriate class:

- add skill points

- add hit points

- add saving throw bonuses

Once all three have been selected, you may then choose one of the following advances:

- increase in base attack bonus (where applicable)

- add a feat (if appropriate level)

- increase one ability score (if appropriate level)

- gain 1 new class ability.

If your class gains multiple class abilities at any level then this option may be selected more than once; choose a different class ability each time. Examples include rogue talents, bonus feats, increase in channel energy damage, increase in sneak attack damage etc

For spellcasters, this is broken into several options:

- treat your caster level as the level you will advance to
- gain access to any increase in number of spells but only of levels you can cast
- (where applicable) increase your number of known spells. So a sorcerer or bard would 'know' the number of spells of a caster 1 level higher, a wizard would get the 2 additional spells for levelling (subject to the usual restrictions) BUT would still only be able to cast at his current level

Once the new level is actually reached through accumulation of sufficient XP, then any other outstanding benefits of having increased a level are added.

Some examples to clarify (hopefully):

- PC A is a level 4 wizard. Having selected the 3 'basic' advances, he gains another.

For the first, he chooses to treat his caster level as 5th - he gains no extra spells, and is treated as level 4 wizard for all purposes other than those directly affected by caster level.

For his next advance, he opts to take the bonus feat gained by a level 5 wizard.

For his next advance, he takes the general feat characters get at 5th.

At which point the GM lets the characters level, so he makes any other changes to make him into a 'standard' level 5 wizard eg more spells, ability to cast level 3 spells etc

- PC B is a fighter 1/rogue 2; she chooses to level as rogue.

After the basic advances, she selects the stat increase all characters gain at 4th.

She then selects the increase in sneak attack damage (to +2d6)

She then chooses to increase her base attack bonus
