• Cuss' great-grandparents were outlaws who settled on Tatooine to remain outside the law's reach

• Closest neighbors were gangsters who ran a spice smuggling outfit for the Hutts

  since there wasn't much to raid
  
• Two other moisture farmers also had spreads within speeder distance of the Wilvern homestead
  
• closest friends were Maslow Wren (the bastard son of a spice smuggler) and Ruth Turner (the pretty daughter of one of the nearby moisture farmers)
  
• Cuss and his two friends stole parents' speeders to hang out together
  

Young Adulthood

• Cuss and Maslow soon developed a rivalry for their friend Ruth's blossoming womanly charms.
  
• Cuss was a clever and daring boy, born of outlaw stock, but kindly parents moderated the intemperate urges in the boy with a solid upbringng
  
• Maslow was raised amongst outlaws & had little moral guidance

• Maslow set a plan in motion, planting rumors of hidden wealth at the Wilvern homestead
  
• A group of murderous outlaws from the spice smugglers' compound fell upon the Wilvern homestead and killed Cuss' entire family
  

Fate & childhood's end

• While his family's homestead was attacked, Cuss was out in the wilderness, looking up at the stars in the company of Ruth Turner.
  
• Maslow knew the place where Cuss and Ruth were stargazing, having spent much of their childhood there together as a trio.
  
• Maslow counted on them being out there

• Maslow, armed with a pistol, confronted Cuss - whose blaster rifle lay nearby.
  
• At close range, the man with the pistol always wins.
  
• Maslow shot Cuss and watched him fall off the rock, believing Cuss to be dead
  
• Maslow attempted to force himself on Ruth Turner, but only managed to shoot and kill her
  
• Maslow returned to the gang of smugglers & bandits, more angry and spiteful
  
• Cuss survived the pistol shot and the fall.
  
• Ruth Turner's kin found him and the dead Ruth, and nursed Cuss back to health.
  
• Cuss vowed revenge, his outlaw blood crying out for vengeance.
  
• Ruth Turner's kin forswore vengeance, and turned Cuss out of their home when he did not do the same
  

Vengeance

• Cuss used remainder of family's wealth to arm and provision
  
• Cuss knew of a sheltering cave in a canyon not far from his family's homestead
  
• Cuss practiced the draw of a pistol (a gun fighter's weapon) while looking into a full mirror, his one luxury
  
• Cuss trained himself to stalk and shoot on the womp rats in the canyon
