Hey, can I roll Knowledge: History to learn about the Founder's Flame so I can use the bonus from Monument Scholar?

I'll allow it because the trait is specific to the monuments in the city.

Magnimar Locations & Streets

The party decides to make their way to the Arvensoar and see what information you can discover from the local authorities. Leaving Heidmarch Manor, you find yourselves walking down the Lord-Mayor’s March. The main street splitting the Capital District and the Naos.

You come across a large structure as you first start walking down Lord-Mayor’s March with the sign naming it the Triodea Opera House. There are a few playbills left out from the previous night, the recent play is titled “The Inconsistand Nymph.”

1

As you continue down the Lord-Mayor’s March, you notice that the Naos is a well-kept district full of high-class shops, restaurants, and businesses. The road is crowded, being midday, but everyone is welcoming and courteous not to run into one another.

2

Just before arriving at the Arvensoar you come across two stand out features of the Naos, the Temple of Iomedae, and the Founder’s Flame.

The Temple of Iomedae is a fortresslike temple sounding the daily call to glory and preaching of honor, sacrifice, and the spiritual rewards to the layman.

The Founder’s Flame is a bronze bowl that is perpetually on fire. The colors flare in the fire, cycling from yellow to orange, to violet, to blue.

DC 15 Knowledge Local:
This magical fountain was built by Antholus Kaddren, who built it as a gift for the city at its founding. Legend holds that if a spellcaster meditates here, they casts fire-based spells more strongly.

3

Continuing on you arrive at the Arvensoar. This is the tallest structure in Magnimar and a wonder in a city of architectural feats. Standing over 400 feet tall, climbing the entire length of the Seacleft and extending nearly a hundred feat above the Naos itself.

Entering into the Arvensoar you see the watch officers busy at work. Reading reports, shuffling files from one cabinet to another, taking a person in manacles from a holding cell through an archway that leads to a set of stairs deeper into the Arvensoar.

The four of you enter and no one pays much mind to the party as you enter. Quickly overlooked and bumped passed as the watch officers are hard at work.

4

What do you do along the way, or just when you arrive at the Arvensoar?

Hey team!

I have been locked out of my Apple ID since Sunday, that whole thing has been a headache. Not sure if someone was trying to get into my accounts or what but here we are. I am getting ready to have a meeting then head to work. I will have out next post up today tonight. I am sorry about the past few days. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Hey everyone, I wanted to give you a heads up that I have quite a busy Saturday lunch/afternoon. I will post and update maps later this evening. Please feel free to RP as you see fit, but I will have to wait to post until tonight. Just wanted to give you all a heads up so you weren't waiting for me to act next.

Sidenote - this has been a fun learning experience and hope you all are having fun.

When it seems that a meal will be welcomed Sheila begins making her way out of the room; “I will have a lunch sent in right away. If you make any headway with this investigation please take good notes and report back what you find. Explore, report cooperate.”

Sometime passes before two servants make their way into the room each holding a tray that have a light lunch on it with some ale and wine. The two servants leave it on the table where Koriah’s notes and the paradox box are sitting.

Anyone Native to Magnimar or DC 10 Knowledge Local Check:

Magnimar District Map

You know it will take almost an hour to reach the Dockway. You know that the Seacleft cuts Magnimar into two major sections. The Summit on the cliff’s top making up the Alabaster District, Capital District and the Noas. And the Shore below making up the Dockway, Lowcleft, Beacon’s Point, Keystone, and Ordellia.

Where at in the Dockway Washer’s Row is located is a different matter.

Thanks so much for the brief info dump. I am reading through the Magnimar, City of Monuments campaign setting since it appears we will be spending a good amount of time here. If I ever mix things up and lay/do something that would go against standard known lore, please do not hesitate reaching out and letting me know. 9 times out of 10 it will be due to ignorance. But, I am hopeful as we progress that if/when it happens it will be fewer and fewer between.

Might take her a while after failing her save against the sleep spell though. :P

If you ask my daughter she would just say that every "princess" needs a good nap... who am I to argue with her?

Rosalyn Vanderale wrote:

”Ah... it would probably be a good idea if someone other than me did the talking with Zograthy and any of the other Sczarni. My accent won’t do us any favors in the seedier parts of Magnimar.”

Hey everyone. As a recent transplant to the system I think there is some Pathfinder lore stuff that I am missing, specifically with Rosalyn as a Chelaxian and the Sczarni as noted in Rosalyn's RP in the gameplay thread. I don't want to mess things up and wanted to know if someone could give me a brief info dump on the apparent bad blood here? Or, I would also totally take a link to where I can read about this situation.

Thanks so much, always wanting to learn more so I can improve for you all in this game.

Wow Estel, awesome rolls! I am also sorry about missing the ask for Natalya’s description.

Estel:
You can tell that these are good quality gems based upon their size. Each of them are worth 50 gold pieces.

As Iradyiel and Estel both ask about Natalya, Sheila gives a vivid description of the Half-Varisian female, Natalya Vancaskerkin.

Walking over to the bookshelf, Sheila opens a small trinket door on the wall. Pulling a leather satchel out she returns to the table. “I also want to leave each of you with one of these. If you were to be injured while on this investigation these magical potions will come in handy.” she pulls four glass potions free from the pouch and places them on the table in front of you. 4x Cure Light Wounds “Also, if you ever need a place to regroup or rest for the night you can call this Pathfinder Lodge your home.”

“If you need more time to discuss your plans I can have lunch brought in here for you, otherwise I have a few matters to tend to and I will be in my office. I wish you luck!”

Let's move forward with people keeping track on their sheet. I really like the idea of the simple sheet Iradyiel put up there as a place holder until you sell or do whatever you do with them. This hasn't come up in the RP but you all have rooms here, so that is where you can store the stuff. I would only ask that you keep track of what is with you, and what is at the house.

As far as weight goes, since you have a home base I am not going to be overly picky about the weight. BUT, if you go and take on "The World's Largest Dungeon" that is like 800 pages long with 16,000 encounters, you will not be able to carry all of that loot around. Yay for Heward's handy haversack!!

When it comes to the items, I think if we focus on the need vs want stance everything "should" balance out. I will also be keeping little tabs on what all you have come across and if I need to tweak loot here and there I can and will do so.

Inventory.... How do people would you like to handle this? As you come across items you all split it up and keep track on your sheets? Or, I also saw in one of the guides I read that some people use a spreadsheet. I am not an excel wizard so if anyone would like to take ownership of doing that it would be a great help.

What do you four think?

Retcon: When Kuno asked if the creatures were part of it.
Sheila looks to Kuno; "Yes this was a test, but I had no knowledge of what was inside the box or any possible traps laid by its original owner."

Present time
Looking over the four of you, Sheila is pleased with her selection as the four of you agree to this secretive mission; “You are correct Estel, a Thassallonian artifact would be an important find! It would not gain whomever found it fame and prestige, but if one of the Sczarni gangs found it that artifact could tip the hold of power in their favor over the others.”

When Iradyiel ask about what parts of towns are the Sczarni gangs located; “That is an excellent question. The Scarnie have been part of Magnimar from the start. They’re not the most dangerous or powerful of the city’s criminal organizations, but they are the most visible. They generally don’t involve themselves in particularly violent crimes, and in many cases in Magnimar, they actually help to protect and police less fortunate neighborhoods, and as such are often well regarded by the lower class.”

“That being said, they can be found throughout the city. There are six major Sczarni gangs in the city: the Creepers, Doolun’s Lads, the Gallowed, the Tower Girls, the Washside Wringers, and the Wreckwash Blades. But, the Gallowed are the most powerful Sczarni family in the city.”

1

“When Natalya first approached me with the offer, she engaged the aid of a man known as the Amazing Zograthy, a Varisian who keeps a permanent tent and fortune-telling business in Washer’s Row in Dockway. It is a narrow alley that serves as a permanent street fair.”

DC 14 Knowledge Local:

The Amazing Zograthy often works as sort of a middle-man between Sczarni and outsiders, but he expects gold in payment for his services.

2

“One last bit of information that could prove helpful. Unfortunately, there are rumors of Nidalese slavers prowling the streets of late, and if these are true, being abducted by a slaver in the middle of the night would certainly explain Natalya’s absence. She might even have been picked up by the city guard for some reason, if that were the case a visit to the Arvesoar, the garrison for the city’s watch might yield some clues. But beyond that I have no more insights to offer.”

As Iradyiel mentions the items that were within the box, Sheila moves and picks up the paradox box; “This is all that I need, you can keep all that was within it. I do thank you for your aid in opening it, and wish you luck on this endeavor.”

3x Garnets, Masterwork Silver Dagger, and a Ring of Feather Falling are what you gain.

Those who look closer to the items within the box notice that the ring is crafted with a feather pattern all around its edge. The other items have no distinctive features.

Rosalyn:

Both the Paradox Box and the Ring detects as magical.

The Paradox Box has a lingering conjuration magics, but it is slowly fading. You get the sense that something from within the box cast a summoning spell that brought the pugwampis to this world. You have heard of magical traps that do this kind of thing.

The ring detects as faint transutation, you know it to be a Ring of Feather Falling

Sheila glances at the Paradox Box. Then addresses Kuno; “Yes, it was a test.” Turning to Koriah; “We will catch up soon, I must see to this.” the half-elf smiles and bows to the party as she leave; “Good luck on your endeavors.” and Koriah takes her leave.

After Koriah leaves, the two Pugwampi creatures are no more, as if they magically dissipated. Sheila cocks her head slightly; "mmm, that's interesting. Please, take your seats once more."

1

“First, allow me to apologize for that unpleasantness regarding the gremlins – but it does provide an excellent object lesson. The life of an adventurer is not is not one for the weak-hearted. That you not only took care of the gremlins but also got the box open in the first place is all the confirmation I need that my gut was right – you’re the perfect group for the job I have in mind.”

“You see – I’ve recently had trouble with one of my informants here in Magnimar, Natalya Vancaskerkin. She’s a half-Varisian who recently approached the Pathfinder Society with an offer to serve as a street informant. She runs with the Sczarni – I’m not sure with which group. A week ago, Natalya sent me a cryptic hint that her gang was on the verge of uncovering an item that would be of great interest to the Society. Since the Sczarnis’ methods of uncovering something often involves an armed robbery or breaking into somebody’s personal chambers, we thought it prudent not to press for further details and instead wait to see what it would produce. Suffice it to say, she hinted strongly that it pertained to Thassilon, and promised to meet with me to discuss this find three days ago.”

DC 15 Knowledge (Local) Sczarni:

You have heard rumors of these Sczarni gangs in the city. You have heard of six different factions across the city. They are: the Creepers, Doolun’s Lads, the Gallowed, the Tower Girls, the Washside Wringers, and the Wreckwash Blades.

“She never kept that promise – instead, she seems to have simply vanished. Initially, I assumed that the acquisition of this item was simply taking longer than expected, but now I’m hearing rumors that the Sczarni are looking for her as well.”

2

“It seems likely that Natalya has absconded with this item she’s discovered. And this is where you enter, my friends. I want to know what it was that Natalya and the Sczarni found. In fact, I’m more interested in that than in what happened to Natalya herself. For now, I’d like to keep all of this quiet – if you can find out what happened to Natalya without letting a lot of people know she was also working for me as an informant, that would be preferable – that’s a big part of why I’m coming to you, as new members of the Pathfinder Society, with this task. You don’t yet have a reputation in Magnimar, and as such, the lowlifes and criminals you are likely to encounter may be more likely to talk.”

“So… go out there and look for Natalya. Find out what happened to her, and to this item she and her gang discovered. If you can secure the item, all the better – bring it back to me and I’ll have a reward of 500 gold pieces for you. And if you can bring Natalya back alive for me to speak to, I’ll double that!”

As you respond, please use the numbers (1-3) as a guide to where you are responding,

As Iradyiel says this and points to the puzzle box, all of you come to the realization that the interior of the box is rather small... not large enough for two pugwampis. You also see something within the box.

Within the Box:

three garnets, a masterfully worked silver dagger, and a ring.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sorry for the delayed morning post. I had two big meetings I had to be prepped for and at early today.
Also, unless described I am going to assume that the target of any spell or attack is going to be centered on what it is you are trying to get. That is kind of why I posted the be descriptive post on the discussion page.

Hearing the commotion coming from the room, Sheila and Koriah burst into the room. Concern flashes from Sheila’s face and turns to anger when she sees the ripped notes and destruction to her table; “What is going on in here?”

Koriah draws her Aklys, but stands down when she sees the two tied up creatures.

Rounds didn't start until the pugwampis were engaged. That is my bad, I missed a round. You are in round 4 of this encounter. Still round 2 of the sleep spell.

Once he has the rope, Iradyiel has no problem tying up the pugwampi that he has pinned to the table. The other one is asleep and being help by Estel and is not going anywhere. Rosalyn and Kuno are still asleep. Round 2 of 10, Marius is still awake. Made the save.

Iradyiel, Estel, Marius. What do you do? This is technically round 3 of this encounter.

The "example of a critical attack" is exactly what I would love to see. Basically so I can see thing laid out, easier on me.

Casting Spells:

In section 5.8 Player Spells: of Painlords Guide He says this...

Insist that when your players cast a (less well known) spell, that they write out the name of the spell, a link to a source, and give the DC clearly.
Example: Kast casts Cause Fear on the goblin! DC 14 Will save vs frightened.

If we can do this ^^^ that would help me from digging around in the character sheets and have an easy access to the spell via link.

One last thing on casting spells (and really anything you do in this game) Have fun with it. See what the components are and describe what you are doing. Make the words come alive with your description so we can have the combat come alive.

Kuno pulls a pinch of fine sand from one of his pouches, begins speaking an arcane incantation and blows the sand towards the Pugwampis. With a magical burst, Kuno cast the Sleep Spell. The magical wave wave fills up a good portion of the room that the party finds themselves in.

The magic passes through the two elven members, Iradyiel and Estel, and onto the rest of those in the room. Kuno senses that powers cuts through the magical defenses of the pugwampi creatures. The one in the grapple hold of Iradyiel shakes off the sleep effect, while the one in the throws of battle with Estel crumples on top of the table asleep.

The Iradyiel and Estel see the pugwampi fall, but hear two more louder thuds as Roselyn and Kuno found themselves within the spell blast.

The awake pugwampi struggles against Iradyiel's hold but is unable to break free.

What does Iradyiel and Estel do?

Behind the DM Screen:

Kuno Caster Level Check 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Kuno Caster Level Check 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Pugwampi Will 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Pugwampi Will 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Roselyn Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Marius Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

Kuno Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Critical Hits Convo: I know tables do things differently at times, so I just wanted to clarify. If you roll a threat, could you have it written out like this in your dice algorithms.

attack roll (Threat)
dice damage (1d6+1)

attack roll (roll to confirm)
extra damage if confirmed (1d6+1)

Hope that makes since. This will make it easier for me to see what is going on.

Side note.... anyone watch the last WandaVision yet? Moving to spoiler box to continue that convo.

WandaVision Talk:

I loved the episode, so much going on to talk about.
The biggest thing I missed is Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel. That did not click in my mind and I cannot believe I call myself a Spider-Man fan. Her first appearance in comic form was in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Wrestling around with the little pugwampi is harder than it looks. Iradyiel is able to pin the creature between himself and the table while grappling its arms and legs with his hands.

One pugwampi is being pinned to the table while the second in engaged in combat with Estel. What do the rest of you do?

Heidmarch Manor

I should have shared this image and explained better so you all have a better image in your mind. The room you all have been led to is the one in the bottom right corner of the map. 20 x 20 in size.

Kuno, with this information, do you still want to proceed with your spell?

Grabbing his sap, Estel strikes out at the pugwami that is damaging the table. Not expecting the attack, Estel strikes the creature. It turns, acting as if the attack was not fully effective, and strikes out with its tiny dagger at Estel in return striking his hand.
Estel takes 1 damage.

What do you all do? “top of the round”

Behind the DM Screen:

Unlucky Estel: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Pug v Estel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Pug crib confirm: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Dagger: 1d2 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3

Khyron:
You do not know if they are susceptible to sleep effects. But you do know that pugwampi's have special defenses against magical effects. I'll let you move forward as you would with this new info.

Iradyiel:

Special Defenses: DR 2/Cold Iron
Special Attacks: Spell Like Ability: Shatter
Languages if any: Gnoll & Undercommon

With concern for Koriah's research, Iradyiel deftly grabs ahold of the one closest to him but not before the little creature strikes out at him with its tiny dagger. But, Iradyiel's quickness evades the strike out at his hand.

Attack:

Pug attack Iradyiel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Pug dagger: 1d2 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3

One Pugwampi is grappled by Iradyiel, the other is scrambling free carving in the table with its dagger.
What does everyone else do?

Rosalyn begins touching the runes, switching their places, causing it to spell out LUCRE. The runes glow as she changes them. This time, when Rosalyn finishes spelling out the word, the runes glow does not dissipate. Actually, the wrath runes on the other sides of the box begins to glow also. With a click a lid appears in this stone paradox box and it slowly springs open.

As the lid opens there is a flash of light as two dog like creatures emerge from within the box. These two dog faced gremlins immediately spring out and begin wreaking havoc throughout the chamber. They begin ripping up scrolls on the table if they are still laying there and start carving obscenities into the table.

DC 11 Knowledge Nature:

These two dog like creatures are a called Pugwampi. You get one question, plus one additional question for each 5 points that exceeds the DC

What do you do?

I remember the first time I did this as a player, we were completely lost on it. Thankfully there is another way to solve the puzzle if the party cannot figure out the anagram.

I didn't think about people already playing this Adventure Path when picking the party. I would say that given the years of experience that we all bring to the table, digital or physical, we all can keep player and character knowledge separate.

If you want to give yourself a check to help prevent the blending of the two, go ahead and to an Int check at the beginning of your post and RP accordingly.

Marching order possibilities:

Single File:
Iradyiel - Estel - Rosalyn/Marius - Kuno

Two by two rows:
1st Iradyiel & Estel, 2nd Rosalyn/Marius & Kuno

Let me know what you think and I will add it into the notes.

Rosalyn:
You get the sense that you have one letter correct

Estel:
It is okay that you have played this and know what the answer is. Just try to RP it as if you don't. ALSO, you flip the letters to ulcer and get the sense that one letter is correct.

Rosalyn is the first to touch the paradox box. As she begins to touch the runes, the two of touch begin to glow, wink out, then appear in the place of the opposite that was touched. Maneuvering the runes to show U-L-C-E-R, the glowing stops and nothing happens. The runes still read as U-L-C-E-R.

Knowledge History DC 12 Bakrakah:

Bakrakhan, the realm of wrath, was one of the seven nations which formed the ancient empire of Thassilon in northwestern Avistan.

The Runelord Alaznist was the last Runelord of Wrath who ruled for many years over Bakrakhan. She was a specialist in wrath magic, now called evocation, and was said to have been a puissant arcane knight.

Once you are in the room working with the puzzle box you can all ‘take 20’ in your perception.

As you look over the puzzle box you do believe that is to be a solid piece of stone that has been carved to resemble a box. Estel brings a lamp closer and sees no obvious seam for a lid or hinges to allow it to be opened.

Puzzle box still sitting on the table, untouched.

Examining the Koriah’s notes:

Koriah’s notes list translations of the significant runes on the box. It appears that the most oft-repeated symbols was the rune for “wrath.” Koriah also notes its associated with evocation magic, and in the earliest days of Thassilon with the word “kindness.”

Koriah also indicates that this rune merely marks the box has haing one belonged to a citizen of the Thassilonian nation of Bakrakhan, and that the rune likely has little to do with the method of opening this particular paradox box.

Koriah observes that five of the box’s face are identical, but on one face, several additional runes appear. They spell out the work “CRUEL.” This word is somehow linked to the box’s mystery. Interestingly enough, each of the individual runes in the word can be reorganized by touching two runes at one. Doing so causes the two touched runes to exchange places for an hour before reverting to their original spelling of “CRUEL.”

If you examined Koriah’s notes, you can attempt the check below.

DC 10 Linguistics or DC12 Intelligence Check:

You realize the key might be hidden as an anagram.

Hey party!

I found this article a quick read that gave me some great insights. Give the Painlord's Players Guide to PBP and let me know what you think. As a person new to the PBP style, I though this was a great players guide.

I do see your point about how combat can become bogged down on this format. I will probably head down the block initiative.

Marching order! Great idea to have set. What is the single file order and your 2x2 order? Don't forget about Marius. Not that you have, you have all done a great job adding Marius into the game. I have in person games that don't RP with the familiar as much.

Finally, I apologize for todays wall of text. I did try the "stepping" concept and placed the numbers to help break up the text and allow you to interject if your PC sees the need.

Great job RPing on the first day everyone!

While the five of you, Marius included, get to know one another you hear two voices coming from down the hall. As the two come into view, one turns her attention to the party.

In an unusually deep voice and with a no-nonsense attitude she opens her arms welcoming as she motions to the manor; “Welcome to Heidmarch Manor, Magnimar’s own Pathfinder lodge! I am Sheila Heidmarch and I thank you for answering my call.”

Placing a hand on the shoulder of the woman next to her; “My apologies for running behind. This is Koriah Azmeren and we were just wrapping up our meeting” Koriah is an attractive half-elven woman dressed in leather armor and armed with a distinctive looking mithral and redwood aklys and a bastard sword, both are currently sheathed and hanging from her belt. With a silent smile, Koriah nods towards the party.

DC 18 Knowledge: Dungeoneering or Local:

Koriah Azmern is one of Varisia’s most famous Pathfinders and a well-renowned expert on the Darklands.

1

Pausing for a moment as if in thought, Sheila continues; “Koriah, Pathfinders, join me in the library.” Sheila takes the party into an adjoining room. This chaber is the lodge library and study. The walls are lined with bookshelves, while several tables in the middle of he room are heaped with scrolls and books. One table in the center, however, supports only a single object – an ornate cubical stone coffer covered with runes. “Please, have a seat.” pointing to the table that the coffer is sitting on.

2

“I apologize for the delay, as I must conclude my business with Pathfinder Azmeren before we meet. In the meantime, though, I thought you could help us with another minor issue. This stone coffer is an ancient Thassilonian puzzle, a cunning feat of magical engineering known as a paradox box. As you’ll see from even a casual investigation, what appear to be seams on the sides are only shallow grooves – there’s no obvious way to open the thing. Each paradox box has its own secret method of being opened. Essentially, a paradox box subsitutes hidden catches and magical triggers for a lock. Given time, anyone clever enough could figure out how to open a paradox box, just as given time, a locksmith can open any lock.”

“This particular box was among those items recovered by Koriah – the scrolls next to the box are her preliminary notes on the possible triggers or methods of opening it, but she’s not yet had a chance to sit down and properly investigate the thing. So… why don’t you put your heads together and see if you can’t do that for me? Even if the box is empty, as I suspect it probably is, knowing the method of opening it makes it a valuable find anyway. I’ll return shortly, and I hope to see that box open!”

Motioning for Koriah to follow her to the door, Sheila says one final thing before closing the door behind her; “Think of this as an audition, if you will – because the actual task I want to speak to you about soon will require as much wit as it will brawn!”

Closing the door behind her, you find yourselves in the library sitting around the table with this ancient Thassilonian puzzle box.

3

What do you do? You can indicate where you might act by noting 1, 2, or 3, and your action will take place at the noted number in the dialogue above.

I learned how to divide quotes! lol. Celebrate the small victories right?

Iradyiel Madras wrote:
CDM you don't mind to terribly if I abbreviate do you? You highlighted GM Damo's page, He makes several PC rolls to keep things moving. Will you be doing the same? That would speed things up.

I don't mind the abbreviation. I have received a few PMs and it is actually how I signed them.

I really like what GM Damo says under the Rolling button. It seems like it would help from bogging things down, where when the roll is needed per the AP I can make them on the side and pass out said info.

In another article I was reading from Painlord's Guide to PBP GMing he mentioned a cool method about Knowledge of monsters in this cool example from another game. I believe I will be using this method with Knowledge checks.

Iradyiel Madras wrote:
What method will you be using for combat. I find block initiative goes very fast. Also, a timeline in combat. If someone hasn't posted within the designated time stated, they will be botted or the character will 'defend.'

When it comes to combat I was thinking about having doing it as I would at the table, but block initiative does speed things up. I'll think on this.

As far as botted characters I think that if each of you had a designated "bot me" spot that says your top 3 actions you'd normally take then I would have a good guideline to run with if a person is away for whatever reason.

I am currently watching WandaVision with my wife, and any number of semi educational shows with my two kids.
I am finishing up The Hobbit with my son during bedtime and we will then be transitioning onto Lord of the Rings. I am personally currently reading a book called Brief.
I am a Detroit Red Wings (hockey) fan. It have been a rough few years as they are in a rebuild.
I have been gaming for 17 years... wow how has it been that long. I started in 3.0/3.5 playing a Human Paladin of Palor that after the home-brew campaign became the king of the nation... talking about inflating future expectations.

The first gameplay thread is up and ready to roll. I will be making a post every morning, and will check in on the post 1-2 times throughout the day and move forward as needed. I am setting that expectation for myself, my expectation for you all is making a forward moving post once a day.

I have been reading a lot of guides/tips for PBP DM/GMing and GM Damo's Play Guide was great. I highly recommend all of us reading it, but here is a brief clip from that guide. Read the "Keep it Moving" section for what I mean by forward moving post.

I am very excited about getting into this game, but please give me time to learn. I like to think that I am teachable. If there is anything that you think I could be doing better please shoot me a PM and give me any tips you might have. I want to continually improve so that I can be a better DM for you so we can all have fun.

Sorry for the wall of text. I will try to not to break that commandment from the guide above.

Morning comes quickly and you unfold letter from Sheila Heidmarch. Reading over it once again for possible missed clues as you eat your breakfast. You know that Heidmarch Manor is located in the Alabaster District of Magnimar, located near the easternmost gate.

As you approach Heidmarch Manor you see that the grounds are surrounded by a stone wall, but the front gates hang open. You look up and the sun sits in the sky marking it to be noon and you are on time. If your PC is an early arriver or consistently late, they do arrive as they normally would.

You arrive, entering the foyer, and are met by a servant; "Please wait here for a moment. Venture Captain Heidmarch is finishing up with meeting that is running long." After a brief bit of time you find yourself standing in this entry room with three other people. Take a moment introducing yourselves to one another, giving a description of your character.

Welcome Iradyiel Madras, Estel Castdelo, Khyron ‘Kuno’ Aendar, Rosalyn Vanderale!

Hey I am sorry for the slight delay on the start. But I am looking to get things going.

A few things I would ask from each of you. I saw some people in the submissions had a character image linked to the profile, if you are able to find one that you think fits the concept please go ahead and tag that to your character profile. Also, in one of the PBP GMing guides I found a great tagline code that you can put on your character profile that will give me easy access to much needed info.

Tagline code:

Race: note the space at the start, very important to leave it in
| HP: 13/13 | AC: 12 (12 Tch, 10 Fl) | CMB: +1, CMD: 13 | F: +1, R: +2, W: +4 | Init: +2 | Perc: +1, SM: +1
Classes / levels: note the space at the start, very important to leave it in
| Speed 30ft | Elemental Ray: 7/7 | Spells: 1st 5/5 | Active conditions: None.
Gender:
Male CG Human (Taldan) Sorcerer (Crossblooded) 2

And a few more fun questions just so we can get to know each other.

What show/s are you currently watching?
What are you currently reading?
What is your favorite sports team, if applicable?
How long have you been gaming, what was your first class and system?

I will have our first gameplay thread up in the morning!

Okay. I apologize for the delay. I had some personal things I needed to tend to with my friend who passed this week.

I have chosen the four PCs that will be starting this AP.

Iradyiel Madras, Estel Castdelo, Khyron ‘Kuno’ Aendar, Rosalyn Vanderale head on over to the discussion tab for what's next.

Everyone else, I thank you so much for the time and energy you put into creating a character. I hope that if there is need for another character that I could come back to the pool that submitted a character.

Thanks again!

Iradyiel Masdras That is very cool. I decided to go through it and it seems that I am a Campaigner: ENFP-A / ENFP-T. I'll have to read through and see what that actually means.

I have collected the list of completed characters below. These are all the ones that have been submitted by Saturday. I am going to go through them and select our party today. I appreciate everyone who put forward a character. I'll be on a little bit later today with my selection.

Updated List:

Estel Castdelo – Elf Rogue – Blade of the Society, Exchange Agent
Krystal Popescu – Human Rogue – Blade of the Society, Ex-Sczarni

I think this is the smallest applicant group I've seen for an AP run on here. Does this AP have a reputation I don't know about, or do you think the limited build options kept people away?

I think limitations on the build is one part. But also the fact that I am not only new to the PBP format and to the Pathfinder system, but not 3.5, is another bigger part.

I do appreciate those who are taking a gamble on me. I am excited for this journey and where it will take us. I have seen some past PBP APs on here that are like 5+ years, and the thought of that is exciting!

Rosalyn Are you still looking to take Greater Adept of the Society and Monument Scholar? I put them on the list but I did not see any traits on the profile.

Quonx too Still taking characters through the end of today(Saturday). I will begin going through the list tonight and finalize it tomorrow and we can get things kicked off.

Edelsmirge I did not go and look for Yesult. I see that he is Aasimir and it is not an available race. Please see the books allowed in my recruitment post. Once adjusted, please put a link to the character in the submission.

Google Slides! I will have to dive into that a bit and get used to it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello!

New pbp DM here and I am trying to get the hang of things before I launch my first campaign.

I was curious if there is a way to have an interactive map where players can move their own token similar to Roll20, but not using Roll20. Kind of like a shared Google Doc that everyone can work on/edit? I have the idea in my mind, but I don't know how to bring it to life.

My initial idea was to just do all the work myself but then I realized it would add extra steps and combat would be longer because of token placement corrections.

Thanks in advance!

DBH - Looking over the crunch I see the Campaign trait of Exchange Agent, but I do not see a Pathfinder Society trait from the Player's Guide. I will give the character another look over, but I believe it looks good. Thanks!

Krystal Popescu - There are a few things with your character that I am not seeing in the books. I see your Ex-Sczarni Campaign Trait, You have one that is called Seeker and That isn't a Society one from the Player's Guide. I also am not seeing the Unchained archetype or alternate class feature in any of the books, and that might be where the Deft Maneuvers is coming from.

Robert Henry - Sounds interesting, looked up the Mutagenic Mauler and Wild Child and they seem like they will be fun to play.

Estel - Hope all is well with your wife and the recovery. I also agree that real life is more important than games. If something ever comes up if you are chosen please let me know. I would like to read some of the DM style of the one you enjoyed. Could you share a link to that game? Finally... I am sorry for the complete rebuild, but maybe with what has been submitted something else might strike you the right way?

Well, Robert, apparently I was wrong in saying "That seems to be about it from what I can see." Onto the answers!

Are you taking the first four character/players who apply? Or selecting from the players who have entered Ideas by Saturday. Or only from the players who have presented full characters by Saturday?

I will select from the players who have submitted ideas by Saturday evening. That should give me time to go through them and select the party.

How much background do you want?

I would like to have characters that are more than just stats on a piece of digital paper. But, I am also okay with a solid concept and have it come to life through the game.

Do you have any posting expectations for players or know how often you plan on posting?

I have not done a play by post game, but I have been part of online forums since the 90s. I am doing a read through of a Shattered Star that is on the boards to help me get a good idea of how this is done. I think that If people were able to post once a day that would be good, that is what I am able to do.

Do you want actual pathfinder society characters for organized play with PFS ID #'s or just 'pathfinder' like characters who will work with the 'Venture Captain' in the game.

I saw the Pathfinder Society organized play section on here, but this is just for fun. I do not know anything about what that really is.

Will you be accepting: archetypes, spells or gear from outside of the prescribed: Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, and Advanced Class Guide.

I think that I would like to stick with those three books that I do own. I only say this because I come from D&D 3rd Edition and I know how cheeky things can get with the years of splat books and magazine articles. This will also help things to not become overwhelming for me as a new transplant to the system. Maybe once we get going and I get a hang of things I would allow retraining of feats and spells and such. Do they do that in Pathfinder?

Will you be using a map system or will this be 'theater of the mind'?

I have purchased the PDF Interact Map Pack from Paizo and was planning on using those maps. I am fairly competent with photo editing software and could add in tokens for the PCs/NPCs/Baddies. Though, just like at the table, not everything needs the grid and "theater of the mind" would work.

Thank you for the questions, hope that clarifies things for you and others. If you or anyone else have any questions feel free to ask!

Thanks!

That is confusing, I'm sorry about that.

I will be doing this campaign with my in-person group, but also will be doing a play-by-post group on the forums here. I wish I could edit that line.

Also, I've noticed other recruitments have a deadline. If we have enough Pathfinders come Saturday night I would love to get things kicked off Sunday.

Greetings, fellow seeker of adventure!

I am Sheila Heidmarch; Venture Captain of the newest Pathfinder Society lodge - and the only such lodge in Varisia at this time. You have come to my attention as someone who possesses a certain amount of skills and interests that make you an excellent addition to a highly specialized team I'm putting together for a matter of grave import, not only to the Society, but to Varisia as a whole. Please report an hour before noon to Heidmarch Manor- you will be compensated for your visit, but that reward will pale in the light of the riches that await you should we come to an agreement on my proposition to you. I look forward to meeting you soon!

- Sheila Heidmarch

This note has been left behind on your desk, handed off to you by a messenger, or even found in your bag while unpacking for the evening. Will you respond?

Hello Pathfinders!!

I am excited and looking forward to running my first Pathfinder campaign in person, and with those who apply online through this forum. I have been a long time D&D 3rd edition player and DM, but have recently joined a new group that plays Pathfinder and I have offered to DM for them.

- I am seeking 4 Pathfinders for this new venture.
- Since I am new I am looking to use the Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, and Advanced Class Guide since I have those books in my collection when it comes to Classes and Races.
- For stats I will be using the Point Buy system, 20 points seems like a good amount to have fun with but not get overly crazy. And let's start off with Max Gold for your class seems like it should be enough to get going.
- Be sure to read the Shattered Star Player's Guide before creation. I will be allowing you to pick out a Campaign Trait and a Pathfinder Society Trait from within.
- Also, keep in mind the Goals of the Society: Explore, Report, and Cooperate section of the Player's Guide when creating a character.
- I will be using the Fame and Prestige Point system within the Player's Guide, so that should add some extra fun.

That seems to be about it from what I can see. If there is anything I am overlooking, be sure to ask.

Thanks for stopping by!

I have used the Critical Hit decks in the past for both the PCs and NPCs. But I did go through and removed all the one hit kill cards. I like the flavor of them when it doesn't flat out ruin the scene.

Greetings!

I have recently joined a new group who play Pathfinder 1st Edition, but I am a longtime 3.X gamer.

I have put forward the idea of running an adventure path for them but with having so many choices it seems overwhelming.
What would be the best choice to give the PCs a wide range of challenges but also has some good role play moments?

One side note is that I might also be interested in running the game online here in the forum also, so maybe keep that in making suggestions.

Thanks!
