Background - Story of Constantine, as told by Vlad Demetrius, First Librarian of the Deathwolves:

Nobody knows how many chapters were created during the Thirteenth Founding, except perhaps the librarians of the Black Library. Perhaps it is better that way, since that founding, rightly called the Dark has begotten much that is heresy and affront to the Inquisition, if not Emperor himself.
There were many experiments made by the Adeptus Mechanicus during the Thirteenth Founding on the orders of High Lords of Terra, including attempts to create female space marines and to combine different gene seeds in order to create better marine or to eliminate flaws from the gene seeds. One of those attempt resulted in the creation of our chapter. Adeptus Mechanicus decided to combine the gene seeds of the two chapters most afflicted by gene flows at that time - Space Wolves and Blood Angels - in hope that the two flaws, Red Thirst of the Blood Angels and the wulfen curse of the Space Wolves, would somehow cancel each other. They were partially right. We, the descendants of those two glorious chapters are not prone to the thirst or tho the curse of the wulfen, except rarely, but the host of other mutations appeared. Our lord at the time, called Blood Wolf, realized that the chapter is doomed to be eradicated by the Inquisition, so he decided to take us on a Wild Hunt through the Void and pit us against the Chaos until we are no more. But our pack survived. We have encountered a beleaguered Eldear fleet fighting the tyranids and rushed to help them. They have been grateful, but that is another story.

Most of us chosen to be implanted with the gene-seed were hailing from the planet Silvania in Calix Sector. Blood Wolf choose to retreat there after confrontation with tyranids. I myself had family there, a large extended clan of what is on civilized worlds called "neo-barbarians". By the time of our return to Silvania more than century has passed and not one of us was remembered by anyone still living. I have suggested to our lord that it would be for the best if we remain in the shadows and approach only tribe elders. And it was so. From that moment on, we have chosen the Newbloods for our chapter from the population of Silvania, always being careful to take them in the dark of the night and to live no one behind to tell the tale of what happened. But we have also created a special relationship with the tribe from which I hailed. Over the centuries the planet has risen from the state of barbarism and the ancient tribe has become noble house, a dynasty of proud warriors and traders, but somehow its association with us has tainted them. I do not know how that happened, but it so. I have watched over my brother's descendants for centuries and I have seen them developing a host of mutations that would make them a target for the Inquisition, at list Puritans. I have guided them and I have watched them rise and flourish. Now they have a huge fleet and many connections over the sector and they are careful to send the word to the Pack whenever they hear news of Chaos. Imperial administration is slow. Often innocents suffer for years before some Space Marine chapter is sent to deal with the threat. But we remain ever vigilant from the shadow. But I digress...

I have watched as the descendants of my younger brother became a noble family and I have guided them in acquiring wealth, power, prestige, planetary holdings and fleets of ships. Only a direct heir to the leadership of the House has ever been aware of the existence of Deathwolves and the House's connection to us. And the heir was always presented to me, young pup. Ultimately, it was I who choose the person who will lead Demetrius through the void between stars. And I have rarely been wrong. But in all those centuries, I have never seen anyone as promising as that young man. Yes, I am speaking of your cousin, Constantine.

He was presented to me a year ago, in the deepest chambers of the Castle Demetrius ossuary, where the skulls of his ancestors lay. Of course, that is the only place large enough to hold this ancient metal body of mine. He was presented to me by his father and your uncle, Mircha. He was obviously very proud of his son. Almost two meters tall, wide in shoulders, with gray eyes and pale skin, Constantine was a picture of perfect scion of Demetrius - but I sensed something in him, a fear. Slightly protruded fangs, such as those that you show, pup, were sign enough that he has fallen to the curse of his family. But, by his bearing I could tell that he was very well trained in both sword and plasma pistol and in dealings with noble and common alike. He was strong and healthy and perceptive enough to instantly recognize what I am. He quickly overcome his surprise and greeted me with charm, but I have sensed a ruthlessness beneath it, hidden by education in the finer points of etiquette. He wore a mask of his own choosing, even confronted by my might. Oh, don't be alarmed, pup. Ruthlessness is a must for a leader of your - our - former House. This is a dangerous universe. But, on the other hand, his love of learning and knowledge was also evident in the questions he started to ask of me, before his father cuffed him. Ah, by your smile I see that you know what I am talking about. Yes, if not heir to the House, he would have made a fine librarian. I have dwelt deep into his soul. I have sensed his love of night, it was obvious by how easily he looked at me, although I was hidden in the shadows of the ossuary. I have sensed the darkness in there. And fear of someone discovering the thirst and the rage and the pain hidden inside. And I was pleased.

After that, his father gave him his first command. He traveled wide and far and he served the interests of the House well. But the House almost lost him. His ship was attacked by the void pirates. We have watched, the Deathwolves, and gave orders not to assist him, but he prevailed - although half of his command perished in the fighting pirates off. His hatred for them is burning ever since. That is good thing, pup. He proved himself to be loyal not only to his own interests, but those under his command as well. That is the mark of true leader.

Only a year has passed and the skull of Mircha, his father, now lies in the ossuary. He is the leader of the House, but he is haunted. He fears that he will bring ruin to those around him. He fears that the Inquisition will come for him and so he has taken to sail the void, hunting for pirates, opportunities and whatever fate and Emperor's will throw at him.

I was worried, pup, but the Emperor has been kind. That young woman that he accepted as a gift has been keeping him sane and his fears at bay. She calls herself a bodyguard, but it seems to me that she protects his mind and soul as well. It is good, pup. Now, begone to your studies! I don't want to spend another five milenia as First Librarian! You need to study if you wish to succeed me!
