The Best News in a Long Time: The Far Side Is Coming Back

True, it's not a comic book. However, this newspaper strip, along with others like Calvin & Hobbes, were big influences on me during my formative years. Larson's humor and insight were amazing. I look forward to seeing what new material he'll delight the world with.

As an aside, years ago the wife bought me The Complete Far Side, a two volume boxed set that contains nearly everything Larson did for the strip. The two books together weigh nearly 20 pounds.

I didn't see a thread for this, soooo....

We already know Robert Pattinson has been chosen as Batman/Bruce Wayne. Although I think he might be able to pull it off, I'm still a little "meh". The only thing I've ever seen him in is the Harry Potter movies.

Now there was this bit of interesting rumor....

Matt Reeves Reportedly Met With Mahershala Ali To Play Commissioner Gordon In ‘The Batman’

My first thought on that was..."No way! Ali is too young. Gordon should be at least a decade older than Batman." Turns out, Ali is way older than I thought (around 45), and he's got a good 12 years on Pattinson.

My second thought was...why would you want an actor as Gordon who could upstage your lead. Then I remembered the last two pairings of Gordon/Batman actors, and realized they'd already done it.

I wonder if this fell through because of Disney snagging Ali for Blade.

At first I thought this movie would be kind of a corny, over-the-top action-comedy (kind of like Big Trouble in Little China). It had Sam Elliot, however. Couple that with the whole Hitler/Bigfoot thing, and I had to watch it.

It was....surprisingly insightful. It showed the horrors of war (which don't always have to be visceral), and what that kind of thing can do to people, whether they experience it directly or indirectly. It also had a nice arc of redemption. Sam Elliot was awesome, as always. Larry Miller was great, as well. He used to write a lot more, which made me a fan, so it was nice to see him again.

In the end, most importantly, I was entertained. I encourage more of you to watch this.

I didn't see another thread for this, so here goes....

I thought this was a great re-imagining of the story. Some great acting and generally spooky s@#* going down. And lots of subtle creepy s~$!. There was even an article about the number of ghosts people probably missed in various scenes. Some of them I had caught, many I missed.

I hear it's getting a lot of good commentary, so here's hoping it'll be enough to order a second season. I'd be interested to see them go further into the history of the house and it's many spirits.

I've got to say, this movie looks pretty damned interesting. They're delving into oft ignored by Hollywood myth, which is nice. I did some reading up on Maui after I saw the teaser trailer, and from what I've seen they did their homework in filling out what little of his background they've shown.

The voice cast (all two of them so far) seem great. The chick does a great job, especially since this seems to be her first role. And who doesn't love Dwayne Johnson? At least, who that isn't a loser.

Visually, it looks stunning. Then again, I'd expect nothing less from Disney. And there's a good bit of humor, as usual. That rooster is going to be a good one, I think.

Anyway, I may actually try to bring my boy to see this. Or, at the least, see if my brother wants to do a trip with us, so he and I can take turns helping with potty breaks and not have to leave any kids alone.

If I recall correctly, Paizo typically ships via either UPS or the USPS. Any chance we can get some additional options? I've noticed a distinct lack of efficiency from these two shippers, more often than not lately. My latest package apparently arrived in Houston 6 days ago, and I haven't seen it, nor an update in the tracking information, since.

Not sure if anyone else is having issues like this, but it's happened to me with increasing frequency over the last year or two.

Wherein I randomly spout off about game ideas I have.....

To begin:

This was from the last campaign I was a part of in Philly. It was a "blown up" Forgotten Realms, and we each took turns DMing, picking up where the last guy left off, and incorporating stuff others did into our own narrative.

One of my ideas was Dagon's Fang - a rock island off the Sword Coast with an ancient tower protruding from it. It had it's origins as shrine to Dagon and the dwelling place of one of the Demon Prince's most powerful oracles, as well as supporting flunkies/worshippers.

Eventually, that cult was wiped out by a powerful Sea Wizard and his allies. They used it as a home for awhile, but eventually all disappeared.

I was most proud of the tower map I had created, using CC3.

Paizo People,

Would it be possible to move my Ramblin' Man thread from the Off Topic Section to the Gamer Talk Section?

Scarab Sages

Picked up the first issue of the new Doctor Strange series. Good opening. Sets up some stuff I'll be interested to see the direction of. Some of Strange's characteristics were dead on.

My problems - Strange conjuring weapons. Interesting, but I prefer to see good old spell slinging. And some parts of his character were annoying. Especially the way he talked. It just made him seem (to me, at least) too damn young. Not a deal killer for me (yet), but just damn irritating.

Either way, I look forward to seeing where they'll go with this.

Although I do wish they had stuck with Dr. Voodoo, Sorcerer Supreme.

Scarab Sages

I've been a big fan of Dr. Fate for many years now, and was excited when they first announced the new series. Now they're about 5 or so issues in, and I've got a mixed bag of impressions.....

There are things I love about the new Fate - his Egyptian bloodline, with the whole "descended from the Pharaohs" is really a nice touch. And I like that they are giving him a (limited so far) medical background.

I also like that they're using the Egyptian gods to start things off. Although, I'd love if they eventually brought in the Lords of Order and Chaos.

My big problem so far - the story is just dragging. I mean, come on! How many issues can we see Khalid being agonized/confused/reluctant about taking on the Fate mantle, then dealing with some problem caused by the endless rain/flooding. And, Anubis, while a compelling villain, gets boring after awhile.

Also, Khalid, get a real costume.

I think it goes back to my overall problem with comics these days: The business model seems to be a standard storyline taking at least 6-8 issues to resolve, all the better to accommodate collecting and repackaging it later for those who don't want to buy single issues. Although, I'm also beginning to wonder of today's younger writer's even have what it takes to tell a story in a single issue. It sucks that they never seem to get a chance.

Either way, if it keeps going like it has been, I don't see it lasting long.

Scarab Sages

Didn't look like there was a thread for the new series yet, sooooo....

New spinoff of a highly successful series. So you've got good name recognition....and that's about it.

Some thoughts....

Spoiler:

You can't "fear" something that's hardly ever seen. While I understand this is the beginning of the zombiepocalypse, if they want to keep viewership up, they need to get some more walkers in there.

The opening scene in the church was very well done. It reminded me of the opening scene in the parent series, right up until that last bit where he gets hit by the car, people swarm in, and the camera pans up to the teeming city...

That being said, I find the drug addict character to be pathetic and unlikable. Although he did show a gleam of potential in the tunnel at the end. For now, however, I'm still hoping he gets eaten.

Same for his parents and sister (as far as the gets eaten goes). The sister I found to be annoyingly self-centered, and your typical obnoxious high school student. The step-father was kind of ok, until he went into the known drug den where people may or may not have been eaten by himself and unarmed instead of calling the police and reporting a potential murder. How f$+~ing stupid can you get? The mom- I was completely indifferent, not caring whether she lives or dies.

The same is true for most of the other, peripheral characters they showed. Principle of the school - meh. Step-dad's ex-wife and son - meh. Daughter's boyfriend - actually, I kind of liked him, and look forward to seeing the daughter's horror when she finds him in an undead state.

In the end, I had almost no empathy for any of the characters. Maybe it was the acting? Andrew Lincoln and Lennie James, two of the first people introduced in the parent series, are wonderful actors. I found myself sympathizing with them from the start. Not so these people.

They did make sure, it seems, to include as many Hollywood clichés as possible: The broken (but mixed) family, the drug addict, the daughter who's really smart and pretty, the teacher who CARES SO MUCH, the poor outsider geek student who KNOWS WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON!!!

I do think the show has potential, but they've got to find a good rate of acceleration in the breakdown of society and rise of the new world order.

Plus, it's L.A. Does anyone really care whether it get's eaten or not?

Howdy IT dudes!

For a while now, I've been noticing something messed up about the 'Hide' function, and thought I might finally mention it to y'all. There are plenty of older threads that I had already hidden at some point, that are now starting to reappear. Some of them are just things I had no interest in. Some of them are troll threads. Some are threads that were locked forever ago.

Anyway, I was wondering if this was a flaw or a feature? Is it just built into the design that old threads which haven't seen action in a long while get "unhidden"? Or is that a kind of unforeseen loop whole? Or is it only designed to hide X number of threads, and once you pass that threshold number, things get wonky and start intruding back into sight? I've only ever noticed it in the Off-Topic section. Not sure if anyone else has noticed it elsewhere.

Wherein I discuss comic book related things…..

I’ve been a comic book collector for around 30 something years. It started with my maternal grandmother buying me an issue of Marvel’s G. I. Joe that caught my eye. Now I have 20+ long boxes worth – maybe a couple thousand? Some great stuff in there, including Crisis on Infinite Earths, a first printing of The Killing Joke, a good bit of autographed stuff, and so on…..

Not too long ago, I finally determined I’d get more serious about my storage, so I purchased a set of Comic Cubes. Each was two rows of drawers high by four drawers across, for a total of eight. In beginning to transfer my comics into the Cubes, I’ve been coming across older stories that I love. I thought it might be cool to share my thoughts on some of that stuff.

Be warned, there will be spoilers. Although, is it really a spoiler if the information is older than some of the posters hereabouts? Anyway, if you don’t like that, don’t read any further.

So, without further ado….

The Very Sleepy Princess

Once upon a time, there was a king whose vast wealth made him the envy of all other realms. He protected his treasure by locking it away in a vault surrounded by magic flowers.

"Be warned," the king said to his daughter, the princess, "For those these flowers are beautiful to behold, their thorns are deadly. One little prick, and you shall fall into a deep sleep where the Lord of Nightmares will find you and gobble you up."

The princess refused to believe her father, and while playing near the vault one day, pricked her finger on a flower. Immediately, she fell into a deep sleep.

Then the Lord of Nightmare found her dreaming mind, gobbled it up, and used her dying body as a portal into the waking world. Once there, he killed everybody.

The End.
