Background:

Clarius spent his life on the border of Taldor staring down his people's ancient enemy, Qadira. His father was landed gentry and a staunch defender of the Crown Prince. The baron was virile and had seven children who lived. As the fourth son, he knew he would inherit nothing, but at least he wasn't shuffled off to the church or an academy. His father was an industrious man and spent the majority of his paternal attention on his eldest son's education. While not ignored, Clarius did find that he had much time to himself. He was fascinated by the knights and armsmen that secured his family's lands and as soon as he could saddle his own pony, Clarius was haring off after them. His childhood consisted of long patrols of his father's lands, living off the wild and learning from an early age how to hunt, track and ride. An old landsknecht taught him how to swing a sword, while a gameskeeper taught him the bow.
By his fourteenth year, Clarius was deemed ready to be sent out (and more importantly, away). His father had an old friend in Baron Redwyrm and had arranged for his youngest child to be paged and squired to the baron. Clarius arrived at the rich estate of Baron Redwyrm. He immediately fell in love with the verdant lands and plentiful hunting. The baron kept hunting dogs and birds of prey. Clarius quickly befriended these animals and spent days riding out with just animals to keep him company.

While Clarius was adept with both weapons martial and simple, it became clear that he preferred the bow to the lance and sword. Baron Redwyrm wisely let the boy have his head and watched as Clarius would go out and find troublemakers on his estate; be they poachers, squatters or thieves. Everytime, Clarius came back with his prey in tow. It wasn't that the boy was antisocial, he could make passable conversation in the baron's court and knew his manners. He just preferred the wild places, exalting in nature.

At the end of his esquiry, Baron Redwyrm asked Clarius to stay on as one of his retinue. Part knight, part forester, Clarius Monastero serves his liege to the best of his abilities.
