Background:
Baldura was born to a simple life among a group of Varisian nomads. Her early childhood was happy and carefree. The worst that ever happened was when her clan's caravan would be chased out of a town because the locals thought they were Sczarni. But that was just the way life was, and it didn't bother her or her clan.
As she grew up, she began to blossom into a very beautiful young woman. She was the object of attention of all the young men in her clan.
Baldura never really saw much for herself beyond this. Eventually, she expected to marry and raise children of her own.
Then one day, not long after her 21st birthday, she was wandering alone through a small town they had stopped him. She was approached by a group of three young men intent on having their way with her. She fought back fiercely. Life on the road and the physical labour it required had helped her develop into a strong young woman, so the men were unprepared for how viciously she defended herself. During the fight, she managed to get hold of a sword carried by one of the young men. She had never used a sword before or even seen one of the type she now held in her hand before, but she struck out with it. At the time, she thought she just got lucky. Now, she believes it was the hand of Sarenrae guiding her. Whatever the reason, the blade struck true and as it did so, flames burst from the blade. The young man was dead in a matter of moments, and his two friend fled.
The people of the town did not take kindly to a Varisian killing one of their own, whatever her professed reason. They wanted her hanged and so her clan left town. Among her own people, she was seen as a hero and blessed by Desna.
But her popularity didn't last. Strange things started happening around her and fire. She discovered she could stick her hand in a flame and withdraw it unharmed. This, too, was seen as a blessing by Desna and the gods until burns began appearing on various parts of her body, areas that had never touched fire. Over the next few months, her beauty began to fade as the skin on her arms and legs blackened and cracked to the touch. She began to wear robes to cover herself more, ashamed at what was happening to her. Her people began to avoid her, and it was at this time that she acquired the nickname "Cinders". Finally, the clan's fortune teller declared that Cinders was cursed. She had not been blessed by the gods after all. It was even possible the young man she had killed had been innocent and that Cinders was an evil murderer, tainted by the powers of Hell. And so her clan drove her out.
She has spent the last several years wandering alone, trying to find the answer to her condition. In that time, the burns have spread along her back and chest. Even her face is starting to show slight burns. Only her hands remain untouched. On the plus side, she has discovered the ability to cast spells, leading her to hope that perhaps she is not damned after all.
She has learnt nothing definite, but she has discovered a number of possibilities. After she met a kindly travelling priest of Sarenrae from Katapesh far to the south, she became convinced that it is Sarenrae providing her with both her powers and her curse. For what reason, she does not know. However, she has devoted herself to learning as much of Sarenrae's faith as she can. She has also spent time practising with a scimitar, first with the one she acquired from the man she killed and then with a higher quality one she acquired later. She has also learned to use other simple weapons and armour in order to better defend herself. For money, she has taken to hiring herself out as a mercenary from time to time. People hiring mercenaries generally don't care what you look like.
Personality:
Cinders (as she now almost exclusively goes by; she rarely even tells others her real name) can be somewhat severe at times. She remembers the happiness of her childhood and desperately wants to be that happy again. As such, she tries to smile and laugh, but often finds herself unable to. She can be slow to trust others, but once she does, she becomes a loyal friend.
Appearance:
If not for her curse/blessing, Cinders would have been a classic Varisian beauty. Instead, she hides as much of herself as she can under voluminous robes, although she will pull the hood back from time to time. She has dark hair and dark eyes.
