About Charles Roland
Noblesse Oblige. These words are the guiding principles of Charles Roland’s life.
Born on a sprawling rural estate in Darkmoon Vale, Charles never knew how truly wealthy his family had once been. Though the Chelish nobles from whom he descends swore loyalty to the diabolist House of Thrune, Charles’ grandparents took up arms for Andoran during the People’s Revolt, casting aside their titles, investing their fortunes in arming and training border guards, and declaring their allegiance to the office of the Supreme Elect.
Such selfless action would have horrified most high-born youths and made them resent their elders for hamstringing their eminence for the sake of the common folk, but not Charles. He considers it a worthy challenge to truly live a life of nobility, in deed if not in standing, and to place the good of others before his own as his grandparents did.
Charles’ parents ushered him into a life of service early on when he was made his uncle’s page at seven and squire at fourteen. During these years, he trained relentlessly in the arts of warfare, excelling at the sword and the joust, as well as in the arts of courtly behavior. While he dominated his peers in the former, he became infamous for dominating their sisters in the latter.
At twenty-one, Charles was bestowed the accolade of knighthood. As a fifth generation knight of the Order of the Lion, he swore to safeguard the people of Andoran so that they may live free of fear and diabolic influence. Humbled by his apprenticeship and tempered by a punitive strike against a Chelish border town in retribution for the raising of Whittleshine, he carries out his sworn duty to Andoran without complaint, finding reward in his accomplishments.
That duty often carries Charles far from the shores of his homeland, undermining the designs of Cheliax either by diplomacy or force of arms. To his dismay, his travels have left little room in his life for a companion other than his horse, Augustin, though he yearns to win the heart of Reginald Cormoth's daughter. He believes that by joining the Eagle Knights, he may gain enough esteem with her father to be permitted to court her.
