About Cal Concord

Cal is a solid sort, down to earth and practical. He prefers to keep his head down and work hard rather than seeking fame and glory. He calls himself a coward freely and makes a point to appear nonthreatening. The truth of the matter is that he is perhaps one of the best marksmen in a given county. The crossbow, often scorned by archers as the slow weapon of peasant conscripts, is his weapon of choice and he operates his like a man possessed.

Cal has an intuitive understanding of targeting that few come close to and he has his brief period in the monastic regiments to thank for that. Before he was a simple drover, he was a bright eyed young recruit. Cheaper and quicker to train than Knights, the monastic regiments filled the valued role of fodder in the Chruch's military engagements.

As noble and good as the nation of Talingarde is, modern tactics still dictate the engagement of large blocks of infantry until one side or the other is broken by the losses inflicted. It is not a calling for the faint of heart and similarly it was not talent that initially drove Cal to his current level of proficiency, but the need to survive. Cavalry, while not as valued as knights, still did not suffer the sort of losses the infantry did and this went double for units of mounted archers and arbalestiers.

As such, Cal pursued his training with all due diligence. After surviving as long as he did, he could have cashed in on his commission and gotten himself a cushy position as a watchman or warden. However, he was dishonorably discharged and his service records were sealed.

Rumor amongst his old unit is that he and his old commander had words about the treatment of an accused witch in a town they were stationed in. Words became blows and Cal ended up crippling a superior officer. Between unreliable witnesses and the lack of evidence one way or another, Cal ended up out on his rump and the whole thing was swept under the rug.

Ace in the Hole:

Cal is always about timing. Once per day, he may either:

A) Force any die roll he rolls to be a Natural 20. If this is a combat role, the critical is automatically confirmed.

B) Force an enemy die roll that involves Cal to be a Natural 1.
