background:

The Motto of the Garess family is "Strong as the Mountains." And most of the men of the Garess family are built like mountains. Cadell is not and is a great disappointment to his father. Cadell's father Hugh is the first cousin of Howlan Garess the current lord of House Garess. Hugh has six children all boys and all big robust men, except for the youngest, Cadell. Cadell takes after his mother who is a small slender woman. Cadell even has his mothers black hair and blue eyes, but this was to easy an explanation for his father who even when so far as to bring in a cleric to use magic to ensure that Cadell really was his son. This did not help his relationship with his wife. Once it was proven that Cadell was indeed his son Hugh did the only thing he could do with a son as disappointing as Cadell, he ignored him.
Cadell was left to his mother to raise. She did the best she could with him. She tried to get him interested in more scholarly persuits, magic, religion, and commerce, but Cadell would have none of it. He wanted adventure and excitment. He wanted to learn to fight like his older brothers. His mother finally relented and hired a Taldan fencing master all the way from Oppara to teach him. The fencing master was a rake and a scoundrel that went by the name Hawke. He became the father figure that Hugh refused to be for his son. A lot of the things Hawke taugh Hugh were things that Hugh wouldn't have wanted him to learn.
Hugh eventually got tired of paying Hawke to "corrupt his son" as he saw it, and sent the fencing master away. Left to his own devices Cadell fell in with bad company. He was constantly getting in trouble, and Hugh guickly tired of getting his disappointing youngest son out of trouble. Eventually Hugh had enough. He threw Cadell out and told him never to come back.
Cadell considered going to Oppara and finding Hawke, but he got as far as Restov and found out about the expedition to the stolen lands. His father didn't think he was worth anything. What better way to prove him wrong than to build a kingdom.
