Background for War for the Crown:

Boram was raised in a halfling settlement near Oppara, Taldor. His childhood was very typical, and he was nearly average in every way. His parents always wished they had moved on with the caravans that came and went, and seemed to live constantly with that regret. As a result, Boram was left to his own and listened to stories of elves and dwarves and humans whenever he could.

Boram moved to Oppara when he came of age, eager to help reform the corruption that he had heard about. His village did not really miss him, as there was little he had accomplished during his time there. His patronness in Oppara, Martella Lotheed, gave him the task of converting to Erastil and moving into the countryside to keep an eye on a small town for her. Although he had never taken religion seriously as a boy, he took it up gladly in order to gain skills and influence. He soon felt that Erastil speaks to him in a way no one had before.

His first assignment took him to the hamlet of Pastorling located Southeast of the city, and he has spent the last five years in grueling labor and tending to his flock. In his spare time he has learned to raise hunting birds, something he enjoys greatly. The farmers there grew to respect this hardworking young halfling, and he gained a level of seriousness that he did not arrive with. Patient and formal to a fault, he was a steady presence at the farming town and listened carefully to people's personal stories.

While watching his flock and keeping tabs on people of interest to Martella, Boram experienced his first real conflict of interest. An uncle of his had joined the canal syndicate and was acting as a licensed inspector. Boram felt he had no choice but to serve justice, and reported his Uncle in one of his regular messages back to Oppara. The halfling was subsequently imprisoned. Boram has not heard any news of him since then. He worried about what his family, and especially his father, would think of him if they knew. He also has considered if the law was too harsh, and if his Uncle was like him just trying to earn a living. He has yet to reconcile this idea.

It was with regret that he was summoned to return to the city on his fifth anniversary away, but he is looking forward to using his new influence and the strength of Erastil to fight against the corruption he has seen. He will need to do this with the strength of his faith and with his patient ethics. Perhaps he will also learn of his Uncle's fate, and in the process reconcile a hole in his sense of right and wrong that still gnaws at him.

Boram's additional fear is that his desire for reform will leave him in conflict with his patron, his deity, his community, or with himself. It is not easy to be righteous. The hawk has it easy; hunt for your master and be granted the hood and reward.
