Background
Spoiler:
Bohdan's emotions were still raw from having buried Father Piotr only a week ago. The kind old priest had been the sole constant in Bohdan's life. Well, Father Piotr and the work at the small farm. Oh and the teachings of Iomedae, the finger cramping writing tasks and the history lessons Father Piotr would give him every evening as they shared the evening meal. Of course, there had been the rigorous sword training too and the physical workouts, lest Bohdan forget that it took both a strong mind and body to serve Iomedae.
But Father Piotr had been the most important. He was the one who had taken in the burly orphan at the tender age of 7 and molded him into the capable man he had become today. No, now Bohdan was all alone. After spending the last days in the company of the old man, whose body had finally given in to age, he had walked down to the village to make sure someone deserving would be able to take over the small farm. Then he had walked out of the village with the intent of never coming back. Bohdan's future didn't involve caring for a farm all his life, but to go forth and show the world the glory of Iomedae, to bring justice in the name of his beloved goddess. It was with this reminder Bohdan's chin had started to lift through the fog of grief over his foster father. And it was this reminder which prompted him into immediate action when he heard the cries for help. The road he had taken was winding close to the sea and the cries came from the direction of the beach. Rocky outcroppings made it difficult to see much down there and the climb down was treacherous. But Bohdan finally jumped onto the sandy beach and lumbered as fast as he could towards the place he last had heard the cries. Rounding a rocky outcropping he happened upon a scene that almost knocked the wind from his chest. A large rowboat had been dragged onto the beach and several men were carrying boxes and crates from a small opening in the cliffface towards the boat. But that wasn't what shocked the large half-orc. No, what would forever be imprinted on his brain was the sight of 4 people chained together, 3 men and 1 woman, and the 4 other men who were standing over them. Well, one of the men wasn't standing, he was lying on top of the woman as the other 3 prisoners huddled together with their faces turned away from the scene. The captors were all laughing and shouting encouragements to the man molesting the woman, while he was slobbering kisses all over the woman's face and breasts. After a few seconds of stunned silence Bohdan unslung his shield and with a fierce battlecry he rushed across the wet sand. The despicable captor was just then sitting back on his knees, his deed apparently finished, when Bohdan came thundering into him, shield first, and slammed him several feet backwards. A viscious thrust to the neck and the man died with his pants around his ankles. Turning towards the stunned captors he once again rushed forward with his shield leading. These were not ordinary street thugs, though, and they quickly spread out so Bohdan could only face one of them at a time. Drawing wicked looking knives the all three hunched down, trying to get past the shield and armor of the huge warrior. Of course, the people who had been carrying goods from the cave didn't hesitate long before joining the fray and a couple of them employed a, to Bohdan, dangerous weapon. While his back was slightly turned, two of the men had dragged out a heavy net, which they now swung over the head of Bohdan. Struggling with the extra weight and the enclosing grip of the net it didn't take long for the scoundrels to overman Bohdan. Someone struck him on the side of the head with something and the world went black. The next thing he noticed was the sharp salty air, mingled with the smell of sweat, and the gentle rolling of the waves. Next came the feeling of manacles tight around his wrists and ankles. And then the pounding in his head announced its presence. |
