Backstory:
Bill Blake is the youngest of seven siblings. Born in Oppara’s Westport district, he had as safe and loving an upbringing as one can have, when living in an international docks district. His father is a guard and his mother repairs and washes clothes, mainly for visiting sailors.
Being the youngest of seven Bill didn’t have the most disciplined of upbringings and was often left to his own devices. While his two older brothers had their eyes set on becoming guards themselves and his sisters found apprenticeships, Bill frequented the docks and taverns. He was drawn by the stories, by the entertainment and by the personality of the exotic and often enchanting strangers. As such Bill already knew at a young age that he would become a travelling entertainer. He would trade stories and music for food and shelter, he would lead his own adventures and eventually become a legend of his own making. At the age of 17 Bill acquired some bongo drums and packed a few belongings. He was set for adventure and greatness! And adventuring life was superb. At least for the first week or so. Then it started to rain, the wind picked up and Bill realised just how idiotic it was to travel without a tent. In addition to that, most taverns already had entertainers better than Bill. If he was lucky he could get some food and sleep with the pigs while doing menial jobs for strangers, but mostly he was just wet, hungry and cold. Bill really just wanted to go home, but he couldn’t. He had told everyone he would go, boasted about the riches he would find and knew perfectly well that no one believed him. So he kept going while growing ever more miserable. On his way to Andoran Bill eventually reached Belhaim just as winter was about to arrive. Once again the Tavern had better entertainers than Bill, but one of the local farmers needed some help and Bill was happy to provide it. A few months passed and Bill stayed at the tavern, paying by helping people in need and, when better entertainers weren’t available, entertaining at the tavern and ever so slowly building up a decent repertoire. All the while he sent his parents occasional letters, telling them of grand imaginary adventures and audiences caught in hypnotic trances by his story telling. Once spring came Bill stayed put. He had fallen in love with the baker’s daughter and she in him. What’s more they had been a bit less careful than they should and were in dire need of having the baker approve their marriage. He did (eventually), Bill found work at the limestone quarry and they moved into what’s really more of a cottage than a house. --------------------------------------------------------- Fast forward 12 years and Bill and Larueen Blake had turned into Bil, Laureen, Sophia, Frank, Dorian and Elisa Blake. Bill entertained most Wealday evenings, work was hard but honest and while each and every one of the children were rascals in their own way, they were also wonderful. Once Bill gathered the courage to tell his parents he wasn’t a travelling adventurer they even came by to visit their grandchildren. When the limestone quarry closed things became more difficult for the Blakes in Belhaim. Larueen had become something of a locally reputable seamstress and Bill earned a little by entertaining, but far from enough and they were eating into their savings. Bill and some of the other men took up some hunting, which Bill was utterly hopeless at by himself, but once the others pointed out where what little animals they could find were, he was decent at firing lots and lots of arrows till he eventually hit something. Lately Bill has begun wondering if perhaps some modicum of adventuring could supplement his family’s earnings, at least till they find a new quarry site. However, Bill knows that on his own he probably wouldn’t fare much better than the last time he tried.
Personality:
While Bill is stubborn and proud, he also genuinely enjoys making other people smile, lending a helping hand when he can and being a father and husband – although you won’t hear him saying that when Elisa, his youngest, wakes him up before the sun rises because she wants to play and is hungry and can’t sleep AND an ogre is under her bed.
By now most people in Belhaim know that any story Bill tells should be taken with a grain of salt, especially if it involves himself and his adventuring days, and to the sorrow of any resident capable of discerning music from noise Belhaim residents also know that Bill both is a horrible teacher and quite bad at crafting drums, but even so the kids love him for teaching them how to play “music” and entertaining their parents.
