Rust-colored eyes peek over a yellow silk scarf which covers slate-colored skin and hair. Bevin has a long swimmer’s body covered in scars, and prefers tight, utilitarian clothing. His status as a devotee of Sarenrae is almost desperately advertised with the scimitar at his belt and the holy symbol hanging over his clothes and armor. A strange birthmark in Bevin’s palm traces a circle of script resembling the sun. It bears no resemblance to any symbol of Sarenrae.
Backstory as Bevin Remembers It:
In his youth, Bevin was terminally curious and possessive. He was always finding little curiosities in the towns he and his father, Giano, visited and bringing them back to their cart. He was especially fascinated by the sun, which he could not bear. One night while playing with strangely colored candles outside Wartle, his father’s cart caught fire. In the ensuing suppression effort, Bevin was suddenly faced with the reality of his heritage. He saw the fear in the humans’ eyes, and heard their curses. While his father did what he could to protect his foundling son, they had to flee with what they could carry on muleback.
As the scalding light of dawn filtered through the canopy of Sanos forest, Bevin’s father introduced his son to his limited understanding of the Drow, and why the villagers distrusted the boy’s slate-colored skin and hair. He admitted Bevin was not his son by birth, and described finding the child in a strange cave, marked as he was on the palm. The two agreed the mark resembled a sun, and Bevin’s father had taken it as a sign of the Goddess Sarenrae.
As he grew older, Bevin took a pilgrimage to the Temple of the Shining Star in Absalom, determined to find redemption and purpose. Without a formal upbringing, he entered the service of Sarenae by a hair, and only due to a knack for healing. Though he studied, he has no aptitude for the work of clerics, and nothing he learned explained the symbol on his palm. What’s more, his stay among the clerics was plagued by dangerous mistakes and dark voices. After one such explosive encounter, he became fast friends with an elven paladin named Vaxalim Tolarin. On his suggestion, Bevin also learned the elven tongue and script, a suggestion first posed after noticing a similarity to the figures composing Bevin's birthmark.
Frustrated at every turn, and tired of the scholarly approach, Bevin now leaves the temple to embark on a second pilgrimage, more comfortable seeking answers out in the world than in the parchments of the archives.
The Real Story:
Giano Carthright is a traveling merchant, born in Riddleport. A youth of adventure and coattail-riding has granted Giano a scarred body, a nose for criminal activity, and a head full of stories, but the loss of a friend at sea set him on a path of redemption, and he has traveled in ever greater circles since. His usual route lies between Wolf’s Ear and Janderhoff, but he’s been known to visit neighboring nations when the tariffs are advantageous.
Before he had his trusted routes worn into the soles of his feet, Giano once made camp in a cave. He was driven to the shade by the beating sun, and a burst waterskin. Unbeknownst to the merchant, this cave connects to the Umberweb, home of an isolated community of dark elves with an abundance of driders. Following the sound of helpless cries, Giano discovered a chamber filled with ash and a small darkborn child, marked on the palm with a circle of script.
Bevin was the last son of Yvo Mestrirc, dishonored daughter of Qupu Mestrirc, and former sorceress of Umberweb. While attempting to create a portal to Castrovel which could not be detected, she instead created a portal to the First World wherein she found herself roped into a clandestine relationship with what she believed to be a human by the name of John Smith. (This was not an obvious pseudonym to her.) She was discovered by her sister, Evibre, and fleshwarped. She fled Umberweb in shame, newborn in tow. Days later, when her hunger overcame her, she descended upon her thinblooded son, only to have her nest set ablaze by unknown forces.
Giano found Bevin that night, and decided to fill his lonely heart with someone who could tolerate his abrasive nature. The two of them traveled together, and though they were plagued by countless mishaps, the pair always shouldered the blame themselves, and never counted themselves especially unlucky.
Scion Lady Xerashir of House Shamyyid, leader of Temple of the Shining Star is aware of the fey entity who haunts Bevin, playing pranks and lighting fires. She has, however, been advised against revealing the spirit’s nature to Bevin himself. There are greater machinations at work here, and Bevin’s fate is one he must seek on his own.
