Ben is just under 6' tall, but his slim frame makes him appear taller. His face is youthful and attractive, with a strong jawline and piercing green eyes that seem to miss nothing. He keeps his hair trimmed short (to keep it out of the way of his work) or pulled back into a ponytail if it gets longer. He does not bother to shave often, so he usually wears long sideburns, and may be considered ruggedly handsome in some circles. However he is not particularly charismatic, being constantly distracted with 'scientific nonsense', and so is usually overlooked (accidentally or otherwise) by the young ladies who share his class & station.

Benjamin D'Blaxtar is a minor noble, and (usually) dresses the part. When he can be bothered to do so. Fine tailored clothing, polished leather boots, kidskin gloves, fresh-pressed long coats and silk shirts with cravats or high ruffled collars are the order of the day. Close examination will reveal that his gloves and boots are sometimes discolored with inexplicable stains, and that even his freshest clothing usually bears the tell-tale aromas of odd herbal scents or chemical smells. He wears spectacles when he feels the desire, mostly as an affectation, but their minor magnification aids him in his reading and work.

Benjamin D'Blaxtar is the second son of a minor but proud noble house in Kintargo. As such he was not required to fulfill the duties of the heir apparent of the family. Most of the family attention went to grooming his elder brother to assume the family mantle and carry forth the family name in proud Kintaran tradition. And to grooming his younger sister in assuming her duties, namely to marry into an even bigger/better family, and be their spy. When Benjamin did not pick up and follow the example of his elder brother, (he positively stunk at sword-lessons for example, and his tendency to always question everything at a young age and speak his mind forthrightly without 'diplomatically' phrasing things did not earn him brownie points) then he was dutifully placed on the family back burner. Fortunately he excelled at being a student, and had a keen and inquisitive mind. His teachers either thought him impetuous and undisciplined, or (most) were thrilled to have such an able student that excelled at something besides politics as they matured. He loved learning how and why things worked, and was constantly taking things apart to figure out how they operated. (He was once caught JUST before he began disassembling the family heirloom antique water-clock. His tools were taken away and hidden for over a month.) His parents made all the correct noises of being proud of him, and hoped to steer him towards a productive yet unpublic position in the family business.

His family are lip-service Asmodeans, as are most of Kintargo. While the thought of actually dealing with an actual devil frightened them as much as any other sane person, they do like the order that the government has brought to the region. As order is very good for the many businesses the family keeps it's hands in. However keenly observant young Ben noticed that what was good for business did not always mean good for the customers. As he matured, The usually practical Ben discovered he did have one weakness. Heroes. The tales of the many heroes of his youth continued to inspire him as he grew, (Despite his continued failures to emulate them on the dueling practice floor) and when he was 16 he discovered the ultimate hero. Cayden Cailean.

At first the worship of Cayden (which was not, yet, illegal, but frowned upon by the adults. Which made it that much more attractive to the youth of the city.) was merely an excuse to drink. But it slowly grew into an actual belief that he could become something better, greater, than he was. And perhaps leave the world a better place than he had found it. While his his belief in Cayden is strong in his youthful exuberance, he is in no danger of becoming a priest of the god of derring-do. He began taking his fencing studies seriously. With disastrous results. However he became quite adept as wielding his now trademark stiletto dagger.

While learning about brewing, in order to be a better Cayden-ite, he became obsessed with the techniques and science of brewing. He began learning all he could from brewers. (Who, while they appreciated his enthusiasm, refused to hand over their hard-held family recipes just because the youth was a noble) Then Ben began his own studies and research. Digging through libraries and demanding answers from his teachers and tutors until they yielded no more answers, then beginning his own research. He began to branch out and study how many different chemicals and herbs and spices interacted with each other. Still trying to find that single, perfect brew. He learned how other liquers were made and distilled, trying to see if applying those techniques would bring forth that perfect brew to amaze his friends. Trying to mix these techniques led him to his first bomb discovery. Accidentally. :)
A mis-identified chemical added to a batch of liqueur led to discovering his first Mutagen. An examination of effects of certain distilled essences led him to his first extract. These gleeful discoveries lasted until he realized that he experienced mood swings when imbibing his mutagens. While fun, They really were not conductive to serious research, and after an unexplained blackout, reduced his frequency of mutagen use.
His youthful cohorts (At first a large group of youth excited to have access to alcohol) have since whittled down to a few true compatriots. And all seem to share a similar world view regarding House Thrune, Kintargo, Cheliax, and their place in it.

Now, at the age of 20, poised on the edge of choosing between University or Family business, (first) Young Benjamin find himself at a crossroads.
A young budding scientist/brewer, with a mind for understanding the world around him, raised by his family to promote Order and Family, yet chafing under the restrictive bit of House Thrune, Ben finds himself wondering if his friends aren't right, and his Hero Cayden might be the better example to follow.

Then, the night of Ashes happened,...

Ben doesn't like to think about that night. Or after. It makes him angry. And he very much prefers to have a clear head. He has heard rumors about a protest of the House Thrune Crackdown after the night of ashes. One of his friends has asked him to go to the protest with them. (Knowing full well that Ben likely wouldn't go alone.) Ben has agreed, deciding to keep a watchful eye out on both his friend, and the guards of House Thrune.
