Background:
Belka is a Kellid girl who discovered a natural ability for Summoning at an early age. Since her tribe lives quite near Irrisen, she kept her ability carefully hidden for as long as she could. Life was bad enough, what with people constantly calling her "the outsider's brat", all because her mother had come from southern lands (not even across her father's shoulder as loot, which would have made her more acceptable, but as a refugee who begged entry into the tribe; Kellid are not fond of begging).
For a Kellid, Belka was small and delicate. Her colours were all wrong, and worst of all, she had heterochromia, which led many to assume she was a Changeling, and thus a Witch in the making. The amount of beatings and angry scoldings she received far outnumbered those she actually deserved. She was true enough to her Kellid roots in the fact that she only grew angrier and more sullen as she encountered more hardship, rather than breaking.

Then... there was a bit of trouble when the foreigner arrived. He was a world-traveller who had come across the north pole, all the way from Tien Xia, and he rather effortlessly swept Belka off her feet. (He was a dashing world-traveller with exotic looks, Belka was still rather inexperienced with positive attention, and she was sixteen. These things do happen, unfortunately...)
It wasn't too long after the stranger moved on that Belka's father discovered that she had "dishonoured the family". If not for Belka's mother begging him to stay his hand, he might have killed her there and then. Instead, he kicked her out of the family house as soon as the baby was born. The baby was a strong, healthy boy, and Belka's father had always wanted a "proper" heir. He allowed his daughter to keep the clothes on her back and a single letter, hastily written by her mother, but otherwise she was completely cut off.

Belka was driven from the clan's lands by a hail of stones and refuse, followed by the mocking cries of her people. She had no choice but to summon the eidolon whose presence she had sensed as close to her as her own shadow for so long, just to survive.
When she finally, finally found a moment's respite in a safe place, Belka opened the letter. Wrapped in her eidolon's warm wings, she read her mother's parting words to her:
'Do not let these people's rejection break you! You are special, daughter, more special than you know. The tribe mocks me for being a weakling, a coward who fled my home to beg shelter in the Kellid lands. They know nothing! I fled from Brevoy, and I fled... No. I still can not say. I can not put that horror into words, I cannot! I suppose I really am weak. But you are not. You are grown strong and tough as tree roots in the earth, the roots that make their ownw way through the darkness and rip apart stone. You may survive the shame and the horror and make them into strength. Accept a mother's blessing, and the name that is rightfully yours: You are Belka Blackpaw-Rogarvia. Let this sign prove the truth of my words.'
Out of the envelope fell a single, golden ring with the Rogarvia crest.

Belka was simply puzzled at first. She had heard of Brevoy, but only as a nation that sometimes traded with the Kellid. She knew nothing of any clan named Rogarvia, and at first she felt inclined to just sell the ring for food, as soon as she found someone willing to take the thing off of her hands.
The further south she wandered, however, her eidolon now exactly as close to her as her shadow, the more a feeling started to burn in her chest. It was a terrible need, the desire to know. Where had her mother come from? What was this 'shame', this 'horror' she had written of? Were there other 'Rogarvia' still alive, and had they driven her mother out?
Especially this last thought rankled. Belka had loved her mother dearly as the only one who always accepted her unconditionally. The further south she went, the closer to Brevoy she came, the longer and stronger her steps became, and the hotter the feeling burned in her chest.
She was going to find out the answers to her questions, one way or another.
